Racists Whining about Make-Believe Character, Again...

... while stating that racism doesn't exist. Oh, the irony!

Once again, they complain about a black actor or actress being hired.

"Mermaids appear in the folklore of many cultures worldwide, including Europe, Asia, and Africa."

MC racists are self-unaware, ignorant and vile.

reply

Funny, I seem to remember when Scarlet was dragged through shit when she played a live action anime character. The hypocrisy is astounding. Some reason it's only negative when white people do it.

reply

Because of the race hierarchy with white people on the top. That has created white entitlement with certain white people (who are racists and not self-aware) expecting to have ALL roles including the very, very few Asian character roles.

Notice how much certain white people are crying over a fictitious character that Disney created. DISNEY CREATED ARIEL and she is their copyrighted character to do as they please.

I write "certain" because not all white people are so narrow-minded and racist. Unfortunately, the racists are a very loud group giving everyone else a bad name.

reply

She wasn't but the studio was.

Hollywood's casting of Chinese and Malaysian actresses in Memories of a Geisha pissed off a lot of people as well.

reply

Wait until they find out where the stories in their Bible came from . . .

reply

There is a reason why they are afraid of learning history and are banning books in schools and libraries.

reply

Education is terrifying to certain ignorant people (usually the religious) because the truth contradicts what they want to believe and or have told people they SHOULD believe so that they can control others.

That is why education is so Got Damn important!

reply

Would you want to ban books in schools that taught that abortion was evil?

reply

Written by the American Taliban? They don't really write or read. They just ban books to prevent everyone else from gaining knowledge.

reply

Oh yeah. So realistic. Nice dodge of the question. (You dodge questions quite a bit, I notice.)

reply

I bet that you didn't read the original Little Mermaid which proves my point.

reply

Your persistent avoidance of particular questions says everything about your position and its validity.

reply

Your deflection won't work. This topic is about a mermaid, not abortion.

reply

If races of fictional characters doesn't matter, then why did twitter rage-ban the creators of the CGI-Race swap of the trailer?

It matters.

You and everyone like you are racist AF.

reply

Projection, again.

reply

Neither the prince nor the mermaid are white in the Anderson book, therefore there never was a "race swap".

reply

What are they then?

reply

Arab

reply

Ah interesting! Do you have a source for that?

reply

Ok. No answer. Never mind. Impressive trolling btw. Got the whole MC all stirred up.

reply

I bet none of you bitches care that Japanese culture is appropriated by white people with every J-horror movie in recent memory being remade with a white cast.

That’s fine right, but there will be hell to pay if you mess with our white mermaids.

Fucking ridiculous.

reply

No one "appropriated" anything. On the contrary someone in Japan made money when they were paid for the rights.

Also, there's a particular concept called localization. It's kind of like when they did a Japanese rendition of Agatha Christie's Murder on the Orient Express with a Japanese cast. They localized the story to their own culture; they didn't "appropriate" British culture.

reply

I disagree. I would say that particular brand of horror is synonymous with Japanese culture and when those movies are remade that culture is being appropriated, and the Asian characters and actors are replaced (RACE SWAP OMG 😱) by white actors. Also I don’t think the theory of localisation holds up in regards to US remakes because the audience is not localised, those blockbusters are made for global consumption.

Which to me is fine, who cares right? Just as I firmly believe that no one should give a fat rats arse about a dark skinned Ariel. I would estimate a good 80% of complainants have had no previous investment in the character at all, and are just latching on to it as a ranting opportunity about the particular political stick they have lodged up their backsides.

Give the girl a frigging chance, I say. Who knows, you might find that she brings the character to life and makes you not care if she’s white, black or avocado green.

reply

I do think there's something to say for maintaining a character's race across generations. Can you imagine, for instance, a white guy playing Blade? I certainly can't, and don't want to.

It's an understandable reality that people see characters that are of their own race as, somehow, one of "their own." When you race-swap them, it's as if you're trying to take the character from one race and give it to another.

This is less important for peripheral characters. For instance, take the James Bond franchise. When Felix Leiter and Moneypenny were played by black actors during the Craig era, I didn't really care. It wasn't a big deal because, ultimately, those are side characters. They are not icons. But race-swapping James Bond himself? No. Bond is a white man. Hands off.

reply

I’d watch a white guy playing Blade. If he was a good actor and the movie was well made I really couldn’t care less about a shade of skin.

reply

I definitely don't want to see a white Blade. Blade simply isn't white. He's not Asian or Indian either, for that matter. He's a black dude. That's part of his identity.

reply

Are you saying Japan is remaking their own films but this time with white people or are you saying America is making remakes of J-Horror movies and putting white people?

reply

The problem isn't that a mermaid couldn't hypothetically be of any race. The problem is that Ariel has always been portrayed explicitly as a white girl. A white fish girl perhaps, but still a Caucasian redhead. She's a white girl who happens to be a mermaid.

To make her black is ultimately a reimagining of the character. She's not really Ariel anymore.

reply

That's not true. There is no red-haired Ariel in Anderson's story. She could be Middle-Eastern since the original mermaid stories come from that region.

Disney dramatically reimagined the Anderson story since she doesn't die at the end, have bleeding feet, dumped by the prince who marries another woman and has her tongue cut out. You don't complain about these changes!

You're ONLY problem is with a black actress which makes you a racist.

reply

I never said anything about the original story. I don't even know the original story. I am obviously speaking of the original Disney cartoon.

Is the movie supposed to be an adaption of the Disney animated film or the original story? You know the answer to that.

reply

The Little Mermaid is whatever Disney wants it to be. There are no "rules".

If you only want to see the original, then that's what you should watch. The update is going to be very different and for a new, younger generation.

It's similar to Superhero movies. They aren't only doing a remake, they update with better SFX, updated film technology with better color, sound, sharper image, etc, and current cultural references. You're not going to hear 1940s music and terms like "gay" for happy, all white actors and weak damsel in distress females in a modern superhero film. Even the acting style is ddifferent. And superheroes rarely wear flimsy thin leotards like they did in older series because a younger generation would laugh.

You've simply become old unable to adapt to the present day.

reply

Let me ask you, if the Marvel character Blade was "reimagined" as a white guy, and Disney made a movie with a white Blade, do you think black folks would complain?

reply

How about an Asian Blade or Native-American? White males are over-represented in movies so sharing with another marginalized group which is underrepresented in film would be fine. As a matter fact, the new Little Mermaid movie is racially diverse with Asians, Hispanics, blacks and whites involved. You should ask yourself why do you have a greedy need for a movie to be all-white.

Btw, you mentioned Blade a few times. It should tell you something when you can only name one superhero who is black. There are easily dozens of white male superheroes.

Furthermore, white males already turn POC characters and historical figures into white characters or hire white actors to portray them. It would be a nonissue if white men didn't hog ALL the roles.

There's also a white supremacist misrepresentation in history in which POC history is distorted to glorify white people and disparage others.

You're omitting that the U.S. is a racial hierarchy with white males on top. Crying over a mermaid portrayed by a black actress shows how petty you are.

reply

I use Blade, because using Black Panther would be ridiculous. You can't even begin to make an argument that Black Panther should be white. But I can name other black superheroes: Falcon, Bloodshot, Luke Cage, Steel, War Machine, Storm, Deadshot (I know, a villain, but also sometimes a hero of sorts). Does Nick Fury count as a superhero? If so, him too. And if we want to get dumb: Meteor Man.

I don't see any reason for any of those characters to be any race other than black.

And my contention is not that white people should have all the roles. It's that characters that have always been white shouldn't be race swapped. I think the same about characters that have traditionally of other races (see above). People of color don't have to be left out; they just need new and original characters created for them.

You say that the US has had a racial hierarchy with white males on top. Do you think that might have something to do with population? Would you complain that ethnically Japanese people dominate society in Japan? Throughout history white folks have always been the majority, so what else do you expect?

reply

You're fine with every change except a black actress. You're only being racist. And racists are irrational.

"Throughout history white folks have always been the majority"

You don't know history. Indigenous Native-Americans were the majority before they were wiped out by white people.

And in the South, whites didn't want the large population of black people to have any power. Scared whites created Jim Crow laws and KKK terrorism to disenfranchise them after slavery ended since Reconstruction was a success. Black people voted and elected black leaders, were allowed to attend schools and open businesses. Racists like yourself didn't want the competition so created obstacles to maintain unfair advantages based on white skin.

You want to maintain white skin privilege and racism which is the reason a children's story keeps you awake at night. Whites have always race-swapped and you never complain about that.

Btw, I didn't write white folks. I specifically wrote white males. Women are oppressed by white men, also.

reply

In my experience, most people who go around calling others racist are themselves deeply racist. That's why they are so obsessed with race.

It's obvious you are racist towards whites. You also hate men. White men in particular are detestable to you.

reply

You're the one crying about a black actress playing a mermaid. I haven't once complained about a white man playing the prince.

reply

Much like how you cried that a fictional Disney Princess wasn’t the correct skin color.

reply

And you 're having fictional memories aka: delusions.

reply

Not at all, you people were pitching a fit that Naomi Scott wasn’t Middle Eastern despite the fact that Agrabah isn’t even real. So is it OK to race swap or isn’t it?

reply

"I never complained. Proof positive that you're delusional!"

reply

I posted proof,

reply

Nope. I never saw that movie nor care.

BTW, Scott is Asian as is the character. Nonissue.

Try harder.

reply

So then the Huffington Post is wrong?

reply

The Little Mermaid is afghan culture not black. She was an arab from the hot springs of Afghanistan. Stop arab washing my culture. Go get your own.

reply

Nope! The first merman was in Babylonia in 5,000 B.C. which is present-day Syria and Iraq. The first mermaid was in Assyria in 1,000 B.C. which is present-day Syria and Iraq. An Asian Ariel would be fine with me. Send your letters to Disney.

Afghans aren't Arabs.

You're not criticizing white Ariel. Furthermore, you're ignorant about Asian history. You sound like a typical Eurocentric racist.

reply

In 1990 white privledge. 2022 now black privledge. We have many many peoples and culture in Afghanistan many admire Arab and think Arab. my people arab. The Little Mermaid is afghan culture not black. Han Christopher anderson was afghan. had to change idenity becasue of white privledge. little meraid is arab fairytale. Youre steeling culture from us. Go get your own story about mermaid. many mermaid stories to tell but little mermaid story is afghan. go away.

reply

Your repeating the same nonsense twice doesn't make it true. See my original reply.

reply

You wouldn't be allowed to watch Little Mermaid since she's half naked and her face and hair aren't covered, Fake Afghan Muslim.

reply

False. I won't be allowed to watch it because the mermaid is not arab. I can only connect to character that look like me. Sick of arab washing.

reply

OOOH...AN "ARAB CHARACTER"...SOMEONE IS GETTING CREATIVE.

reply

Louder in the back, infidel.

reply

RANDALL? LUKE? QUAID? LEO? ALL OF THE ABOVE?

reply

Obvious troll is obvious! Isn't it embarrassing to watch a guy pretend to be someone else to agree with themselves??

reply

Yeah? Well I had sex with your wife,

reply

I know this group home with all black residents and they will only watch TV if black people are on it. I tried putting on Seinfeld one day and well it was no picnic.

reply

"Seinfeld" is a very diverse TV series with many different ethnic groups, races, age groups, disabilities and health issues. It's very New York City! I repeatedly defend that show because many people who don't watch are unaware of its diversity.

Racist "Friends" is a different matter! It has an all-white New York City. Very unrealistic.

BTW, people want to see themselves represented on the screen. I'll watch anything unless discrimination is taking place. I stopped watching "The Amazing Race" when they stopped having contestants who were older or had disabilities. Ditto with "Survivor", "Big Brother" and those singing contest shows.

reply

Racist "Friends" is a different matter! It has an all-white New York City. Very unrealistic

THAT ISN'T TRUE.

reply

People in the background and extras were practically all white. That's not New York City. The show's location should have been New Hampshire if they didn't want any POC.

And Joey was an Italian stereotype which I found very offensive, too.

reply

🤣

reply

White people were together with no diversity? How dare they! Disgraceful

reply

The white friends are fine. New York City is called a Melting Pot because of it's amazing diversity. Only 32% of people are white and mainly from ethnic groups like Jewish, Italian, Polish, Greek, etc..

reply

Jewish people aren't white, and two of the main Friends cast are Jewish.

reply

Extras were white instead of representing New York City's diversity.

reply

fresh prints of bel air and no whites in bel air. no arabs either despite big population in bel air.

what was wrong with joey? i liked him.
