A fat, angsty, transgendered kiwi teen? This is the plot?

We are supposed to care about this emo kid? Really enjoyed the movie until then.

reply

Well, I think that was one of the plot points - he was supposed to be a person no one sympathized with or cared about (except Deadpool)

reply

Ah, I see. Thank you for the cordial response.

reply

When did they say he was transgendered?

reply

He nearly ruined the movie for me.
Decent action (although often disappointing)
Funny jokes (making this ultimately a comedy and nothing else)
Weak writing (but that's ok in most comedies. Just keep it funny)
Irritating villain that is the focus of the plot. Every time that kid was on screen, I felt like sneering.

If I look at this movie as a cbm, then it sucks. But as a comedy with a bunch of hero cameos, it is pretty good. I can think of many comedies that were junk but succeeded on strength of laugh.

"Weak writing (but that's ok in most comedies. Just keep it funny)"

I actually find comedies with intelligent writing funnier. My cousin Vinny, Big Lebowski, Wolf of Wall Street, Tootsie, etc.

reply

It's all a crap-shoot. Yes, there are some comedies with good writing that are funny. There are also tons more without good writing that are also funny. Comedy has the job of being funny. That's it. If there are elements of quality within then it is a bonus. Your list is ok (never thought Tootsie was very funny and MCV was enjoyable but low on laughs) but more outlines the exceptions rather than proving the point. Don't misunderstand me, I don't think that comedy has to be "dumb" nor bereft of quality plotting, etc. There are good ones of every stripe; from Day at the Races to Idiocracy to Tropic thunder. My criteria for good comedy is not "intelligent writing." Rather it is "being funny."

reply

Well, I really think that comedies are pretty much the genre that involves the biggest amount of subjectivity because humour is highly personal. I laughed my ass off at My cousin Vinny, almost fall asleep Dumb and Dumber (which has a consensual agreement that it's a classic of comedy). It's not because it's bad or anything, it just didn't work with me. What is funny for one person is boring for another. Me, for instance, I don't like either Jim Carrey or Adam Sandler. Obviously if they are so successful, it's because for some people they are funny. I simply find them boring and annoying, while Seth Rogen (a really unidimensional "actor") makes me laugh for some reason. So I don't think you can judge the sense of humour of another person. Unless in the worst cases a person considers all the shittiest parodies like Date Movie or Meet the Spartans as the funniest comedies of all time... there I might judge their taste.

comedies are not really about the technical aspect anyways, neither are they about great performances or outstanding writing. Like you said, they are here to be funny.

A few years back, I was judging people for their taste in comedies, but with time I realized how humour is personal and what's funny is highly relative.

reply

It is interesting to parse. Strange that it is easy to judge someone on other genres but comedy is, indeed, so personal that who can be judgemental in the face of the mystery of humor? Even that Meet the Spartans dreck has its fans. I have about a 50/50 good/bad reaction from friends to whom I have lent Douglas Adams books to. You can James Bond all manner of details from someone by observation but you can't know their funny bone.

reply

That's the thing. The fact that he was so damn whiny was a major turnoff and made it hard for me to care whether he lived or died. This in addition to trying to shoehorn some slapstick comedy to his/her character with that damn pen.

reply

You weren't meant to care if he lived or died, just as long as Deadpool cared. This was a story about Deadpool's redemption, not the kids. His arc is a device to allow Deadpool to show growth.

reply

Transgendered? Just because lesbians look like teenage boys doesn't make teenage boys female impersonators.

Secondly, he was meant to be your typical troubled kid that the world treats with distain and it was up to Deadpool not to be like everyone else.

reply

The actor is clearly female. One of those female-to-male trannies.

reply

It is called body positivity

reply

What? He wasn't transgender! At least, I didn't get that vibe from him.

reply

Incredibly disappointing....

did not like the kid,the character or the actor playing him...

didnt like the fact that they literally stole The Plot and storyline from Looper...

IMO Cable was a missed Opportunity, Brolin could have been so much better had he had a better script and better Character ark to work with...

Overall, a decent sequel....But really suffered from Losing Tim Miller The director....

Its clear to me now after seeing DP1 and DP2....Tim Miller had just has much to do with the success of DP1 as Reynolds....

Fox Picked Reynold over Miller when they had creative differences on where to go with DP2...which was the right decision,You got to keep Reynolds and keep him happy, but if I were Fox, I would have figured a way to Keep them both, I would pulled out all strings and done whatever it took to get them on the same page to get them both back...

In the end I think DP2 really suffered from Tim Millers absence ....

while the consensus is still Good for DP2 its not as good as DP1 and I think Its really going to show in the box office for DP3....DP2 Made slightly less than DP1 in every way, I think DP3 Will make significantly less than DP2....

reply

The plot is actually taken from Cable's origin story with the villain swapped out for another.

reply

and from Looper

reply

Right but considering they were adapting Cable's origin story, it makes sense that they would use the origin featured in the comics which came decades before Looper.

reply

but considering A Major motion picture just had the exact same story and plot 4 years ago, You would figure they would want to make big changes

Instead they went with the exact same story...which must mean they knew of Looper, Knew it had the same plot and story, and either just couldnt think of a different story to tell in Deadpool 2 or couldnt think of a creative way to way to at least put a spin of Cables origin so you could at least tell they tried to do something different than Looper

It seems to me, They just had no problem copying Looper.....unfortunately I think you might actually be falling right in to their Evil Plan

again at some point early in the pre production process, there had do be a meeting with a room full of execs and the people that were involved in making the movies, It had to come up "we got a problem here, Cables Origin and The story you guys want to go with in this movie was Literally Just done 4 years ago in LOOPER"

at this point, some in the room had probably seen Looper and knew, but some hadnt, They probably all got together in the room and watched Looper, and for the next hour sat in horrified silence realizing the exact story they want to tell in DP2 was just told 4 years ago in Looper.

after a while The decision had to be made to go forward, start over or try to tweak the story enough that it is at least noticeable different from Looper.

the decision was clearly made "Fuck it" we'll just COPY Looper and do the same thing

and the surely at that point came the discussions of "whats the worst that can happen" and then they started listing the reasons why it will be ok to go ahead and go forward and copying Looper.

reason 1 probably was, "Look Looper didnt make that much, It barely topped out at 70 Million domestically, not very many people thats going to see DP2 has even seen Looper to know were copying it.

reason 2 is(and this is where you've fallen into the trap)..."Look we can always fall back on we wanted to be accurate to the source material, for those who kill us for copying Looper, we can just say hey cable's origin was written before looper, if we want to be accurate to the source, there was no other choice but for Dp2 to having a similar story and plot as Looper"

at that point, Many execs around the room jumped up and said "Holy shit that will work, there are plenty of idiots out there who'll believe that, they eat that up and never suspect we were just too dumb and too lazy to try and creatively tweak the story to make it different from Looper"

at this point the meeting ends, with all execs feeling good and confident they've found a way to trick a lot of people in to being okay with them copying Looper.....but later as they are all ALONE....they all feel SHAME for not being able to think of a way NOT to copying Looper, and the more they think about how easy its going to be to trick a large part of the audience into being okay with copying Looper, the more SHAME they feel for The Audience

reply

So your argument is that a story from the 80's ripped off a story that was written decades later.

Okay, then.

reply

Yes. Looper invented the time loop plot.

reply

Looper copied Deadpool.
