Chances of underperforming?

I know the first was a huge box office success, but that was before Disney really cranked up the live-action remakes and everyone seems sick of them now.

I don't really know but I really liked the first movie. Hopefully this movie will be as good.

I doubt it. Disney is pushing hard their political movies, faking numbers if necessary. They've made a lot of money with the Avengers movies, so they can afford it.

Not everyone. Far from everyone, in fact. The last Disney live-action remake definitely underperformed (excluding the Mary Poppins sequel that ultimately got overshadowed by Aquaman), but that is mostly due to its poor reception. Neither critics or audiences responded well to it... I am of course talking about Dumbo.

However, the only other recent Disney live-action remake that could legitimately be considered a disappointment neither critics or audiences cared for, was the poorly-received sequel to Alice in Wonderland (coincidentally another Burton film). Everything else, though, has been a hit with audiences & (sometimes) critics. The slightly underappreciated Cinderella was actually a relatively big success, too. The smaller-scale and generally well-received Christopher Robin was a modest success as well, albeit that doesn’t count as a remake.

The latest Disney live-action remake, Aladdin? Looks like another hit for Disney. Aladdin is surprisingly having a good word of mouth and it is so far performing strongly at the box office (it overperformed in its opening weekend). Is good word of mouth genuinely helping? Hell yes! Critics may be split on it... Disney detractors will try to spin things as always... although by the looks of it audiences are indeed loving it. (And note: the early box office projections for The Lion King are massive.)

Now when it comes to the Maleficent sequel, its success will depend on the quality of the film and, obviously, its word of mouth. There is a chance the interest won’t be there like there was the first time, sure. After all, there’s a 5 year gap between the first and second film. Can one really expect the buzz to remain strong after all this time? While the first Maleficent was a big hit that most audiences seemed to like, it’s not like it’s left a lasting impression. As such, if the sequel doesn’t get a good reception (mainly with audiences) and also has no strong competition at the box office, it could very well make a lot less than its predecessor.

Having said that all that, I highly doubt audiences supposedly feeling “Disney live-action remake fatigue” will be the reason behind Maleficent 2 possibly underperforming. And again, keep in mind that it’s been 5 years since the first one came out - many weren’t even aware that a sequel was coming in the first place - so who knows how this will play out. Providing it doesn’t get wrecked by critics, then I feel Maleficent 2 has the potential to be a big hit EVEN IF it doesn’t make as much money as the first (not many sequels outgross their predecessor anyway). It really doesn’t need to make as much as the first one to be considered a success.

Lastly, considering this sequel has an October release date (it has a Halloween vibe to it and it actually looks good), then I don’t see it having a hard time attracting audiences during this season. But that can also depend on whether or not Maleficent 2 will have some competition. Time will tell...

Yes, IMHO it has a good chance of underperforming as "Maleficent" sucked ass, this is likely to be worse, and Jolie has no box-office drawing power.

Yes, any G-rated film will make some money as some parents will always be willing to pay a few bucks to shut the little bastards up for two hours... but that's not going to be enough to recoup the costs on a big CGI film like this.

You may be right about the market being saturated but the first one was really well done so it might pull this one up as well.

If this has the usual 200+million Disney production budget then all I can say is...uh-oh.

Disney makes more movies profitable than universal and wb , thats a fact

Shit happens. Loot at Wrinkle in Time and Solo.

Some boycott perhaps from the Joker fan nerds might happen. But it will still be a hit.
