No, you have to watch Thor Ragnarok first. Even the after credit scenes, which are also important to IW. I strongly recommenced watching Thor 3 first.

It doesn't matter.
I watched MCU movies in that order and understood everything. In fact I loved getting my questions answered in random order.
A:IW -> Introduced to me plethora of characters I know a little about, since my childhood.
Thor ragnarok: Understood. Thor brother sister reference from A:IW. Doctor Strange's first meeting with Thor bros
Avengers: So Loki is merciless psychopath eh?
Thor 1: Got to know how Loki was adopted
Iron Man: Such a disappointment. Full of cliche
Iron Man 3: Didn't watch cartoon Iron Man. So wasn't expecting much from Mandarin. Better than expected
Civil war : Why so much tension between them that they are fighting?
Age of Ultron : Oh that's why
Spider Man Homecoming: That was a good movie
GOTG1-Thanos reference here and there. Meh!
GOTG2-Couldn't finish.
War soldier: Going to watch it to how Bucky and Captain got together

First avenger, Ant man, Iron Man 2, Thor 2, Doctor Strange, Black Panther. Their trailers reveal the whole story

The beginning of IW may not make much sense if you haven't seen T:R. No spoilers, but at the beginning of IW you see Thor and his fellow Asgardians as they were at the end of T:R. If you haven't seen T:R you will have no clue why they are where they are or why Thor looks like he does.

Which isn't a huge deal, but I do recommend seeing the films in order.

Well, I've never understood this whole Marvel vs DC argument. I've been collecting comics for nearly 50 years & enjoy both houses (amongst many others); same goes for the films.

There really isn't much of a Marvel vs. DC thing. What there is is a lot of sour grapes. Most true comic fans (myself included) WANT a strong DCEU. There's room enough for everyone and the DCUniverse is rife with great ideas and characters that would be fantastic cinematic fare. Look at Wonder Woman. Not even a favorite character of mine, but wow is that movie good. But WB has almost gone out of their way to not deliver. I mean, it's obvious they saw the MCU and made a conscious decision to do things differently so they would not just be seen as riding Marvels coat tails. And that is understandable. But what they've done has not been critically or financially successful. Yet they refuse to right the ship. And for thos eof us that ARE comic book fans....that is almost criminal.

The worst of it? The "DCEU fans" KNOW this. Deep down, in places they won't dare admit, they KNOW BvS, Suicide Squad and Justice League are colossal mis-steps. And their refusal to just own that (it's really like they are getting paid by WB to defend the DCEU) is just infuriating.

Honestly....look at the X-Men Dark Phoenix board. It's about a Fox property, but there he is, saying the MCU is bad and the DCEU is the best....on a board that has nothing to do with either.

I vividly remember reading DC Comics Presents 26 (which already had me because of the Stalin art) and seeing that preview of New Teen titans and being floored. Plus, Kid Flash was the first overtly Republican superhero (revealed in the later issues) I remember and found the injection of political views very interesting.

You can certainly see A:IW without watching Thor:RR but then you won't really understand all the events at the start of the movie.

It's your call but Thor:RR is now out on Red Box and NetFlix. You can watch it first and then take in A:IW.

No especially. Thor Rag was really just Thor's own personal story. If you want to find out what happens to Asgard then you might want to check out Ragnarok but it doesn't make much difference in the Infinity War storyline.

First half was some decent football but the second was unwatchable for most part. England won't get far playing like this unfortunately. On topic, watching Thor3 isn't that crucial, sure the first five minutes or so of A:IW is a follow-up to how Thor3 ended, but after that there aren't any connections. Personally I find Thor3 to be one of the best if not the best MCU movie, if you liked Guardians Vol1 you'll like this too. A:IW is a great movie but rather heavy and it leaves you emotionally empty, perhaps it wouldn't be bad to watch A:IW first and then Thor3 just to cheer you up. Waititi has an excellent sense of humor.

Agree re the footie - last 8 at best (sorry everyone, I seem to have hi-jacked my own thread & turned it into a World Cup board, lol).

Anyway, getting back on topic, I think I'll do my best to see Thor3 first just for continuity purposes (I really enjoyed Guardians Vol 1, so looking forward to Thor3), but if I get no joy, then I think I've gleaned enough from this thread to understand that A:IW just starts where Thor3 left off. Hopefully, I should be able to fill in the blanks, yay!

I hope you will get to see Thor 3. Just out of the top of my head there are three things you must see in Thor to know why some things happen in IW. I could spoil them, but I will avoid it for now. Of course, some of them are small things and you could fill the blanks with some educated suppositions, however, Thor is the second most exploited character (after Thanos) in IW and it would be good to understand his arc.

There are several posters in this thread who have told you that it is not necessary to watch Thor 3 before IW. For me that's not true at all. However, I have decided not to argue with them because to counter their opinion I would have to go into spoiler territory and since you are the OP, you deserve not to be spoiled.

I am not recommending Thor 3 or saying it is a good movie (though I really, really loved it), since it is a different Thor movie (not for everyone). However, I am trying to respond to your original inquire. Thor 3 is kind of necessary to better understand Thor in IW and Thor is one of the most important characters on that movie.

Right, that settles it - I’ll definitely watch Thor3 first. Oh and thanks for the non-spoilers ranmast. One of my biggest gripes is when people put massive spoilers in the title of a thread. It’s now reached the point where I won’t read the message boards until I’ve watched a particular movie.
