Only Short Round could have saved this

Short Round teaming up with Indy again would have been something to go see.

The writers really dropped the ball. It's a slam dunk idea.

reply

Nah, people still would have complained.

reply

I must have missed something. Didn't know Short Round was such a fan favourite.

reply

Short Round saved all the good guys including Indy by waking him up from the Black Sleep of Kali with a flaming torch, remember? Otherwise, they would've been slaves to the evil god forever.

reply

What does that have to do with being a fan favourite or not? Helena saved everybody in Dial as well. Short Round is the biggest problem with Temple.

reply

No, you mean Willie Scott is, screaming her way through the adventure and almost getting them killed more than once.

reply

Willie Scott was the second biggest problem with Temple.

reply

First, I'd say.

reply

I think the biggest problem is those pilots waiting until everyone is asleep so they can drain all the fuel, sneak past them and jump out with the only two parachutes onboard, in order to kill them.

Just shoot them / throw them out when they're asleep and save yourself the entire cost of an airplane...

reply

The plane thing is even more stupid when you look at the map as they're flying. They make a stop at Chungking - one wonders why Indy and co. didn't simply hop off there. There was certainly no reason for Willie to continue tagging along.

Or better yet, how about if Lao Che doesn't tip off Indy that he's been poisoned. Indy keels over at the table, Lao Che takes back the diamond. Bada-bing, bada-boom.

reply

Ha ha 😂 Both good points. I did note that angled plane stop show on the map on my recent rewatch!

As for the club diamond thing - These guys sure liked to laugh a lot. I'm sure they told him just for the comedy angle...

reply

Still begs the question though, doesn't it, that if Lao Che had no intention of giving Indy the antidote, by bring along a real antidote? 🤔

reply

Yes, bringing back Short Round doubtless have been better than bringing in Fleabag, but it was never going to happen. You see, Short Round cannot function as an idealized self-insert for Kathleen Kennedy. It also explains why Indiana Jones ends up not being the protagonist of his own movie. I am absolutely, positively, 100% convinced that Fleabag is here for the same reason that Rey was not only introduced into the Star Wars sequel trilogy, but made a Mary Sue who can do everything better than the legacy heroes (she knows how to fly and fix the Millennium Falcon better than Han Solo, and she out-Jedi's Luke Skywalker, despite having no training). Kathleen Kennedy wanted to put a girlboss character into these franchises so that she could sit back and watch an idealized, fictional version of herself outshine the legacy heroes.

reply

Kathleen Kennedys only 'creative' idea is - "put a boss girl in it". But what about the script? That should be enough to fill the theatre. My work is done here. Cya.

reply

I agree with most of what you say. But, to be fair, "It also explains why Indiana Jones ends up not being the protagonist of his own movie." I think that's more to do with his age. Because they've made it clear that Harrison Ford wanted age to be a part of the story, but not necessarily in a way it's made fun of. So. I noticed, that seems like it takes shape in how the first half of the movie, Indy is essentially begging to be brought along on the adventure, trying to prove his worth. For example, there's the conversation between Helena and Teddy about how she's really secretly in charge. Which we can debate but is irrelevant to my point here. In earlier films, he was unquestionably in charge, now, he started off tagging along, before coming into his own again

reply

Yeah. I would have loved to see Short Round teaching as a visiting professor from Hong Kong, not in that crummy New York college, but in Princeton where, I think, Indie had taught in the previous movies. We would learn that Indie helped Short Round pursue a career similar to his, lifting him up from life on the streets. Short Round would have been an Indie of sorts himself. Possibly a spin-off material. Who knows. But that couldn't have been possible with Kathleen Kennedy around. Speaking of sidekicks, the cunt ruined Sallah, turning him into a New York cab driver. Why do that?

reply

I guess EEAAO hadnt come out until after DoD had finished filming and was 'locked', and after after it won all the Oscars either there wasn't time to do an additional scene for 50y old Short Round or they just couldn't figure out how to put a scene of him in there (maybe the end but then the shock of seeing SR would've taken from the reunion with Marion),

Unless he could've been driving with Sallah? (he was a taxi driver in ToD - it was probably considered Sallah or Short Round .. and maybe Ke wasnt available bc of EEAAO?)

Whatever, he wasn't really missed,I didn't come out the cinema going 'wait a second WTF was Short Round!?'

reply

It may have put more bums on seats to have Short Round back and taking most of the actions scenes.

Right now this movie is flopping hard.

reply

It flopping has nothing to do with the quality of the film. It's a good film. Mission Impossible got better reviews from RT critics and word of mouth and is not doing all that much better than indy.

There is a lot of factors involved here. Indiana Jones fans are aging dead and a lot are bitter old assholes. 😂 Plus Younger people are not into the franchise.

reply

Would it not have been just as woke for Short Round to be his sidekick in this?... 😂

reply

It wasn’t woke before, so why would it be woke now?

reply

Right...and DOD is not woke with Helena Shaw...

reply

Right… because Shaw is exactly like Short Round…

If you don’t know what you’re talking about, then for your sake, don’t bother posting.

reply

To be fair, Short Round was much of what was wrong with Temple. Bringing him back for this one, though, as an adult (and no longer there for slapstick kids appeal), might have worked. What we got instead was a new Mutt (which nobody asked for), and a new Short Round. The new Short Round was a better Short Round, but there was no improvement on the Mutt. If anything, the opposite. Bringing back the real Short Round would have provided continuity, and would probably have been miles better than what we got.

reply

Maybe DoD would've been a bigger hit had it been Short Round in the kid role, and saving Indys ass in the plane (easier to imagine adukt Short Round flying a plane than a kid)

Basically have Short Round in Sallahs role as the taxi driver (still have sallah in the film though) who goes with Indy to find Helana

reply

I kind of liked Sallah being a taxi driver - that's flirting with an immigrant stereotype. But they should have given him a much bigger role. I mean, what's the deal with the following dialogue?

Sallah: I miss the desert. I miss the sea. And I miss waking up every morning wondering what wonderful adventure the new day will bring to us.
Indy: Those days have... come and gone.
Sallah: Perhaps. Then again, perhaps not.

And then they leave it there. Sallah doesn't go. "Perhaps not" suggests that he will be going along, but he doesn't. C'mon, movie, the guy had brought his passport and everything!

reply

I doubt it. Crystal Skull brought back Marion and people still hated it.
