A good film let down by a unsatisfactory ending?

I really liked this film and got caught up in the strange story and drama, along with the beautiful Irish locations and the fine acting all around.

I wonder what other people think of the ending? It certainly didn't end on a high note. A pretty soft landing and very open ended which I felt was the only minus about the film.

reply

It felt rushed. Glad I didnt have to pay.

reply

Yeah, the ending wasn't really satisfying to me either.

reply

Ending was perfect. You wanted them to make up?

reply

Yes. Obviously. Why did they not? Neither of them had anybody.

reply

Because they aren't real people. They represent extreme traits in human character. And they are locked in eternal war until one wins. And then someone else is born and the battle starts again. Only Sioban is a rational human. Mrs. McCormick was hysterical, though, a totally wack old witch looking like she came out of an 18th or 19th (not 17th) century painting.

reply

Precisely. Some of these people...

One of the messages of this film is that incivility/a smallish evil, can lead to larger ones. The incivility and other evils are communicable, can become generational.

Ireland knows all about that - not all of it is/was externally wrought. Recovery comes from within. Its a lesson that goes far beyond Ireland, actually. They are simply in a bit of a historical laboratory for the experiment. Lebanon & Israel & Syria & the US & many others are in their own boats of incivility.

Speaking of Israel, check out last year's documentary, "Blue Box." Only one comment on it here, mine, but I think more people should see it.

reply

Will do. Thanks.

'Forever Pure' was a fairly dispiriting revelation of the state of things in Israel.

As a film to me this was a total failure and waste of time .... but I have to admit it made me appreciate our modern technology and internet and all the other distractions and things to do and people to interact with so I don't have to cut me fingers off.

reply

The ending is what the reality is still.

1917/1923 Ireland still has repercussions today in 2022.

The correct answer I think...

reply

Yes! People who wanted a happy ending don't understand what the movie is about

reply

Thats what you get for failing to get colonized by the brits.

reply

What ending could the director have chosen? That either one killed the other? That's very cliché and so typical happening in 95% of movies and shows; or they could have made up and become friends again and go to the pub talk about boring things that would have made me laugh.

reply

This is the only ending. These are eternal warring forces in conflict t hat we live with on so many levels, from global, to in our own minds, a village, or a nation state.

reply

I wonder where Colm would live?

Might have to kip a few night's at Pardaic's a few inches away in the other other bed, bit awkward.

reply

It did end rather abruptly. Although, it definitely left the door open for a sequel. This war is not over. Lol...

In part 2, Pan could threaten Colm to cut off his fingers if he doesn't start talking to him and go to pub with him. Haha....
