Is this show being forgotten?

This was the IT show for a long time. So huge. So talked about. Just like Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones and Walking Dead in their heydeys. But you don't hear about it anymore. It doesn't get brought up in discussions of legendary shows. It doesn't seem to resonate with younger audiences at all. What you think? Are you the only person in your social circle still carrying a torch for Sopranos?

I would say there are a variety of factors for why it has become forgotten (or at least trending away from “greatest shows of all time”):

- not on Netflix
- people under 30 years old were too young to watch it when it originally aired
- no reboot/continuation (as of yet)
- lack of main cast members who have appeared in other popular movies and shows to remind audiences their involvement in Sopranos
- the show is too gritty to have reruns in syndication on network television

I think your point of lack of main cast members appearing in other shows is a strong one. That's almost always what turns me on to something new. Just Edie Falco keeps getting the big roles.

Yes! If I like an actor or filmmaker in a show or movie I watch, I’m more likely to check out their previous acclaimed works.

The Many Saints of Newark should re-kindle some interest in the series.

This looks interesting.

Thanks for putting that on my radar, I'd never heard anything about it but looks promising!

this comment aged poorly

I don't think so.

It's not on Netflix but it's on Amazon Prime. 64% of households have Amazon Prime. No reason for this to be forgotten.

But it hasn't. It's always in the top tier of all-time shows lists. And there was more talk of it in 2019 for the 20th anniversary. But you can't expect it to be on the tips of tongues either.

In September of 2023, you can access The Sopranos on:

Max (Used to be HBO Max)
Hulu
Amazon Prime

The streaming services are sharing shows and movies under some arrangements.

I like the Hulu version because you get the episodes with "Previously" at the start and "Next week" at the end. Just like the series used to run. Max ...or at least HBO max, ran the episodes without the bookends. I guess HBO is still available alone on cable, so that's one more place to watch The Sopranos.

So now more people than ever can watch The Sopranos, and as for me, I watch episodes and entire seasons from time to time just like I return to favorite movies like ...er.. The Godfather and GoodFellas.

I don't think the show has gone away any more than any other huge show has a decade after their conclusion. It still pops up anytime there's a greatest show of all time discussion, or one of those click bait list like "Most shocking tv show moment" or "TV character death we still haven't gotten over." While there have been shows since then that have gained "event" status whenever there's a new episode (Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad being the biggest) but I don't think that diminishes anything The Sopranos did.

The two things that might work against the Sopranos are both due to being on HBO. First is that it's nearly impossible to syndicate, due to the language, violence and nudity (even though in hindsight, there wasn't that much nudity). A&E tried it for awhile, and probably did as good as possible, but in the end you just longed to watch the regular version. And second, after Netflix took off, HBO realized that Netflix was making a fortune off the shows HBO produced. So they wised up, created their own App, which is awesome, and yanked all their stuff off other streaming services, and put it on their own.

Fuhget about it!

I thought the show sucked.

The therapist thing was so corny and has been done countless times.

The characters were all rotten assholes.

I know people like that in real life and a show about them made me want to barf. I don't know what entertainment value if could really have to watch a bunch of sociopaths. I think it was more of a fad.

It was similar to Game of Thrones though, which was also boring.
