Big movie when it came out

This was a big deal when it came out. We were pumped to see the SFX and the story was great for us kids.

Now it's pretty silly. But, Bill Paxton still delivers a fun performance.

reply

Yep I was young when it came out and it blew me away but watching now - though still entertaining in a ID4 way, it is silly. It's got tornadoes though, Wizard of Oz references and Helen Hunt which are good.

reply

I think Twister and ID4 are both legitimately good movies and very entertaining. I've watched both several times and really enjoy them.

Twister is probably the best disaster movie of all time. It's a well-directed film with a great cast that brings their A-game. I actually got reconnected to the movie a few years ago after not seeing it for several years and was surprised by how well it held up. Now I own it on Blu-Ray.

reply

I AGREE...TWISTER,ID4,ARMAGEDDON,AND CON AIR ARE THE FOUR HORSEMEN OF THE 90'S APOCALYPSE....AND I LOVE THEM ALL🙂

reply

Ha, that's a good way to put it. I'd go with The Rock instead of Con-Air for my 90s Nic Cage action movie, though.

reply

THE ROCK IS ALMOST TOO GOOD...CON AIR HAS THAT THROW EVERYTHING IN THIS MOVIE FEEL.THEYRE BOTH AMAZING THOUGH.

reply

Don’t forget Face/Off for the Nic Cage 90’s action movie trifecta!

I love all three of those movies, and proudly own them all! Awesome action flicks, each one of them!

reply

I still very fondly remember going see The Rock and Face/Off in the theater back in the day. Those were definitely some excellent action flicks and I can credit them with turning me onto Nic Cage and making me a fan.

I'll also point out that Face/Off is easily John Woo's best American film. His Hollywood career was overall pretty disappointing, but at least he gave us Face/Off.

reply

Twister is probably the best disaster movie of all time...

... right behind the original Poseidon Adventure, The Towering Inferno, Armageddon, Dante's Peak, The Impossible.

reply

I haven't seen all of those, but you'd really rather rewatch Armageddon or Dante's Peak instead of Twister?

reply

Just re-watched Dante's Peak on Netflix. Twenty years later the special effects are still solid. Bill Paxton has more charisma than Pearce Brosnan, but Linda Hamilton is cuter than Helen Hunt imo.

And I will defend Armageddon to the death... the science is crap, the logic is frankly stupid but I just love that big dumb bombastic movie. The heavyweight cast and the over-the-top machismo and heroics put it in my top three. (Deep Impact was pretty good too though.)

reply

I'll agree on the effects in Dante's Peak. There's some genuinely excellent practical FX work in that film.

And I like the film overall as well. In fact, it may even be my #2 disaster movie. But it's no Twister, in my opinion.

Also, Hunt > Hamilton, even though I liked Hamilton in that film.

As for Armageddon, I actually like a lot of Michael Bay's films, but Armageddon just isn't one of them. I've TRIED to like it, but just can't do it. It's way too long and I always lose interest about halfway through.

I do like Deep Impact well-enough, but I think of it as a different kind of disaster movie since the actual disaster stuff doesn't start popping off until the last 15 minutes of the movie.

reply

Armageddon is so bad it's not even funny.

reply

I tried to rewatch it recently and didn't even make it to the end. It's weird because it seems like the kind of movie I'd be into--a big, spectacle disaster movie with lots of great actors is my kind of shit--but I just don't like it very much.

reply

Maybe it was the horrible Nickleback music . . .

reply

I'm sure that didn't help LOL.

reply

In a way, it's the Nickelback of movies. So many claim to hate it, but it's popularity and views (listens) oddly persist.

reply

Its a movie for men. Its so funny and the friendship works so perfectly. And all the stuff in space. And Bruce Willis saving all of us! Its the perfect Armageddon movie :) .

reply

I remember going with my brother to see it when the movie was released and I loved it. In 1996 the kinds of effects that are seen in Twister still felt relatively new and novel and that was a big part of the appeal of the film.

There's more to Twister than just good effects though. The cast is amazing, the story is great, and there's a surprisingly strong emotional core thanks to the subplot and believable acting between Paxton and Hunt. Love it.

reply

They always show it on TV here, if I start watching it, I get suckered into it. I agree that it does hold up for an almost 25 year old movie.

reply

For me, it's age actually works in its favor. I find that movies from the early-to-mid 90s have a very specific feel and texture to them and it's one that I love. I find it very nostalgic.

The whole decade was just a great era for film. There are so many good 90s movies.

reply

I agree. The 90´s had the best popcorn movies.

reply

It was great back in the day. I remember coming out of the cinema in the middle of the city and looking beyond the skyscrapers for any sign of a tornado.

reply

The last time I watched it, BluRays didn't exist. Does it not hold up? I watched it every time it was on tv.

reply

Last time I saw it was with streaming. The cow doesn't hold up digitally. Pun intended.

reply

I thought it was stupid even back then.

reply

I remember this movie seeming a lot more serious when it came out. My memories of it were of a major drama/eco-thriller with Spielbergian cinematic moments and intense, nail-biting sequences. Like “Jaws” but with tornadoes.

In reality, it’s just a goofy B-movie with expensive SFX. Oh how time can change perspective.

reply

It's a guilty pleasure. Dusty becoming a major actor was a big surprise. He was sooo gross in twister.

reply

Yes it was! I remember seeing it twice at the cinema. Twister was also the first DVD I bought a few years later.

reply

Still enjoyable. Surprising how many recognisable faces flash past amongst the support players and interesting how dated the very style of the film is. But it's still fun to watch even if it is a bit silly at times.
