Dalton was Straight-Edge

loves to live the life mingling with alcoholics and the dregs of society but doesn't engage in their activities. That's very similar to Straight-Edge types who wear their sobriety on their sleeve like it's some type of accomplishment. Dalton could have gotten an SBA loan and opened up a martial arts defense school, not wasting time trying to right the wrongs of Jackie Treehorn

reply

It's probably good that he didn't drink on the job. I'd think that his sobriety gave him an edge over drunk fools. And he made good money doing it.

reply

I don't think Dalton would classify as "straight edge." He smokes a lot of cigarettes in this movie.

reply

So he's an angry Drydrunk?

Btw, I've met ST8 Edge types years ago who smoked like chimneys but preached against alcohol and drugs. They called themselves "Straight Edge for Jesus" even.

reply

I don't know the exact classification of it. I just assumed that tobacco use was a no-no amongst that group.

reply

It must vary from region to region. In California, cigarette use isn't considered a vice with the St8edges I met.

reply

....and drank a lot of coffee.

reply

Bartenders aren't supposed to drink on the job either. It's not 'straight edge', just good business sense.

In fact, working at a bar would have the same rules as any other workplace, which is to not be inebriated while on the job.

reply

You've never been to bar or Roadhouse if you believe that

reply

Probably true at corporate bars, bit most small bar bartenders drink on the job.

reply

love this movie and who doesn't hear family guy saying Roadhouse

reply

It's been a long time since I've seen "Road House". I remember thinking exactly the same thing - why is a guy that supposedly has a PHD in Philosophy working as a bouncer in a bar?

reply

Because making coffee isn't his thing?

It is PHD in Philosophy after all...

reply

Couldn't find a real job.

reply

He was drinking when he went out with Doc and Wade. He just doesn't drink often or on the job.

reply

I get the feeling he likes drifting and not settling down anywhere. A business would require too much from him that he doesn't want to do. I also got the impression he gets paid quite well to clean these places up.

reply

Good answer. He did seem to like to move on when the bar was cleaned up rather than stay and keep collecting big bucks for little drama. And he was making big bucks for the '80s, probably $150K per year back then.

reply

Big money now too! A job like that would allow him to work half the year if he wanted to and I doubt it is constant work anyway. The clubs would use standard bouncers first and only call him when all else fails.

reply

Yeah, you got it. He was making a lot of money, and liked moving around. Also, there's really only one gig for a person that has a Philosophy degree, and that's teaching college. I've taught college- it isn't all that. Dalton probably knew that.
