Anyone like this less now?

Aliens is still a good movie, but the older I get, the more I’m drawn to the original Alien and Prometheus and see Aliens as more of a movie made for 14-year-olds; not to be taken in a bad way, but it just seems less sophisticated by comparison.

I feel the opposite lol. I always tried to hold Alien and Aliens as equally good but differing cinematic achievements. Simultaneously I had a voice in my head telling me the original was the superior movie, until recently I honestly favor the sequel a little more instead. I think it's because the themes and human drama speak to me more so than in the original.

I watched Aliens not that long ago with 2 of my teenage kids. They can appreciate older movies. My son liked the first two terminator movies.

I was actually surprised that they didn’t like Aliens as much as I thought they would.
I still enjoyed it.

I think it is superior to both Alien and Prometheus.

I think alien is still a good movie. I thought the first half of Prometheus was good but didn’t care for the second half. Overall was disappointed in it.

Been a little while since I saw Aliens but each time I've rewatched it's held up well. Certainly more combat-esque but that was the point - basically a metaphor for the Vietnam War.

The first movie plays like a horror... But the tension holds up on repeated viewings. Especially THAT dinner scene.

reply

As soon as it dawned on me that if they just have followed the chain of command, nothing would have happened, I stopped liking Alien. I know it's a horror film and that the characters have to be stupid for the movie to movie. But every man has a line and there's mine.

reply

they dont *have* to be stupid for the movie to movie,
Its just an extremely overused cheap plot mover-onner

reply

If they hadn't been stupid, the movie have ended with them not letting the infected back and everything would have be fine and dandy.

reply

But Ash had orders to bring the alien back.

reply

Ash would have gotten spaced.

reply

They wouldn't have spaced Ash. The crew of the Nostromo weren't soldiers. They were probably making insane amounts of money to do tedious labour that sends them into deep space. It's unpleasant, but pays well (I'm guessing), and doesn't require a tonne of training and knowledge compared to other disciplines.

Something scary happened to them in the dead of space and they panicked and responded according to themselves, not according to the best possible actions given a completely calm, logical, disciplined mindset.

I don't need characters in a movie to be perfect paragons of wisdom, intellect, and tactics (with a little meta-movie foreknowledge thrown in) for them to work for me. I just need them operating at peak efficiency for *themselves*. Kane was hurt, Lambert panicked (as always), Dallas was trying to be the rogue hero "screw the orders" leader type, Ripley selected the logical course of action (her personality), Ash let them in (for his personal reasons, but at the time he appears to be a bleeding-heart doctor), and Parker and Brett just went rolled with it 'cause they're more laid-back and not so much with the take-charge and act tactically stuff.

reply

Yes, thank you. The movie clearly showed why they didn't simply follow "the chain of command". Except Ash, none of them were eager to explore the signal anyway.

reply

It's a really well-written movie, and the characters always do what makes sense from *their* perspective. We can scream "DON'T GO ON THE CREEPY PLANET!" all we want, but they're not expecting facehuggers.

reply

I love how they feel like real, relatable people. One of my favourite 70s (and sci-fi) movies. Just saw it on the big screen yesterday.

reply

I've never actually seen it on the big screen. I came kinda late to the party with the Alien franchise. That'd be so cool.

reply

I've grown to like it a bit more now.

reply

14yr-olds? Yeah, that's kinda insulting. Alien and Prometheus are actually more mature, but Aliens being more action-oriented just makes it more entertaining. And actually, I think it appeals to a wider audience. If I were writer/director, that's what I'd aim for.

I don't feel I like Aliens less than I originally did. More I've grown to appreciate Alien more. Prometheus isn't so much a bad movie for me, more not a good Alien movie.

reply

I still think it's one of the 2 best movies ever made (the other one being Die Hard 2). Maybe if you've seen it often that you like it less?

Prometheus sucks harder than a Nilfisk because of plotholes and the casting of that terrible non-actor fassbender.

reply

You think Die Hard 2 is one of the 2 best movies ever made?

reply

The film is okay-ish. Quite an old film for me. But still okay. Prometheus however is excellent.
