Han Shoots First

I've found my old VHS tape of Star Wars in its original form and it's so much better than the versions that have followed. Sure the picture was grainy but Lucas added nothing with all those dumb extra scenes. Greedo was just getting ready to shoot Han and BAM "sorry about the mess".

Makes sense. When another being is pointing a gun at you from six feet away, you're not going to wait until they shoot to fire your blaster.

reply

I was thinking the same. Even in the Earthly US, anyone who has a gun pointed at them unjustifiably is in their right to defend with deadly force.

reply

In the latest version that came out recently, they digitally removed the blasters and inserted a rock, paper, scissors match between Han and Greedo. Han won with paper over rock, and the two shook hands and went their own way like honorable gentlemen.

reply

I know you're joking but I would really like to see that scene...

reply

I think it'd be even better if, after the Rock, Paper, Scissors match, Greedo still drops dead at the table.

reply

In the version I saw, Han and Greedo's roles are reversed and Greedo wins the conversation by accusing Han of being a white male.

reply

Fuckin' A he shot first!

reply

Han never shot first or last. He just shot.
Greedo never did!

reply

I like that.

reply

Yeah I don´t get the whole Han shot first thing. Han was the only shooter...

reply

Han shot preemptively!

I don't mind the special edition since I have been watching it since it first came to theaters back in the late 90s. I barely remember the original versions. And the only way to get them in good format is to spend $300 on a laserdisc player and an additional $100 on the OT Star Wars movies on Laserdisc. I am not sure $400 is worth it.

reply

Let's not get out of hand here, you can get a good used laserdisc player and the movie for about 50 dollars if you go to eBay. I thought about selling my discs of the movies until I found out that you can easily find them on eBay for less than 20 dollars each. Yes, if you want some nifty collectors edition they're pretty pricey but otherwise the discs aren't even worth the time to list them.

reply

Well for me there's also the problem of having an HD TV and an SD TV that has like 5 older SD game systems surrounding it. I don't really have any space for a laserdisc player. I found SD things don't look good on an HD TV. Hence why I hook my older SD systems to an old SD TV.

If you mean an "official" way to get them, then the 2006 "GOUT" DVDs are better than the LaserDiscs, since they were transferred from the most recent LaserDisc masters, but retain all of the masters' resolution due to DVD being a higher resolution format than LD (as well as being digital rather than analog).

Unofficially, you can get two of them in 4K, scanned from 35mm theatrical film prints (and the third one is being worked on), or you can get re-creations of all three of them in 720p. Those are all far superior to the LDs or the GOUT DVDs.

reply

Agree, never saw an issue with it.

reply

Yes, it introduced Han as someone who has a history and can look after himself in a bad situation.

reply

Of course he did. He's the same guy who warned his enemies not to bring a knife to a gun fight, after he shot them.

reply

When you have to shoot, shoot. Don't talk......................Oh sorry wrong thread!
