Would Nixon had gotten away with it today?

Absolutely.

reply

Without a doubt in modern times, he would have walked.

I think a stronger admission of guilt and apology would have gotten him out of it then.

The USA is very forgiving of people who admit they are wrong. So forgiving they accept the insincere apologies and non-apologies of modern politicians.

Nixon showed class in knowing he was wrong and should step down . He was a very complicated person. He and Carter were the last great presidents.

reply

I disagreed with several things Nixon did re Watergate (including Watergate itself) but he did the right thing by resigning. This was ethical.

reply

I agree with this " ...did the right thing by resigning. This was ethical."

I did post "Nixon showed class in knowing he was wrong and should step down."

But that's not the point I was making.

reply

I don't know about now, but if he had told the truth when Watergate happened John Q. Public would have looked upon the whole thing as "politics as usual", shrugged it off, and Nixon would have gone down in history as a good president.

reply

WHEN ---- the Committee to Re-Elect the President, told him they did the break-in at the Watergate,,, Nixon should have said "Sounds like some of you are going to jail", And held to the law,,, Instead he said "Stonewall this",--- That's when he broke the law

CARTER was an embarrassment BUT not as bad as Biden

reply

It wasn't class that convinced Nixon to resign. It was to avoid the embarrassment of being the first president to be removed from office. Impeachment was inevitable, and he knew he was so toxic that enough GOP senators would have to distance themselves from him and vote for conviction. Not only does he avoid that embarrassment, but with his hand-picked successor in place, he could get pardoned from any criminal charges.

reply

Good question, but it is more complicated.

The Watergate hearings news coverage spurred Roger Alies to create Fox News decades later, an outlet for conservative commentary and thought.

Without Watergate, there would be no Fox News.

..and without Fox news contribution to shaping opinions, people would be left with just your standard NBC/ABC/CBS and maybe Rush Limbaugh.

So could Nixon get away with it WITHOUT the help from Fox news or right wing media?

Dodgey.

reply

Lol

Of course he would have. Today's hyper partisan media would be arguing they they were sorry and being sorry should be what what 'really mattered' after all and we needed to let bygones be bygones.

The media back then was concerned that the president lied about knowing about a break-in in the first place and there was evidence of the lie.

reply

It would been have a complete non-issue today. They do way worse shit way more frequently now and its just like you knoe totally normal. Nothing to see here.

reply

No.

He's a Republican.

They don't get away with farting in the Men's Room.

reply

This! Modern demonrats do more evil than Nixon even before breakfast.

reply

Biden has gotten away with worse.

reply

A Republican? A Republican can't even eat KFC without being heavily criticized.

reply

Amidst the background of the corruption of Biden, the FBI, and the CIA today, the stuff Nixon did wouldn't even be noticed.

reply

Nixon was the better man.
