Simon Pegg launches astonishing foul mouthed attack against Asian British Prime Minister

I'm not sure we could describe this as racial motivated - perhaps he just genuinely hates Sunak as a person? - but Simon Pegg has launched a stinging attack on the British PM for the outrageous proposal that kids should learn maths!

https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/films/news/simon-pegg-rishi-sunak-maths-b2256548.html

The sheer madness of his rant is compounded by his idiotic cry of "What about the arts? Why not the arts?". Yes Simon, enforced arts until the age of 18 is a sure fire way to foster creativity 😂.

I dont see how Spegg getting upset at the proposal of more maths and not arts equates to racism OR a personal dislike of Richie Rishy.

What it tells me is he really doesent like the idea of "more maths and not arts "

Personally , I'm with Sunak on that matter - probably not on any of his other ideas.
If it was up to me Maths, science & engineering would be free at college and bullshit like "film school" would be paying for it with their enrolment fees

reply

Let people who want to learn math, science, and engineering pay, and let those who choose liberal arts have the free education. It's those who pursue the arts who enrich society, often to their own detriment. We need math and science scholars too, but they're a dime a dozen, and they are rewarded monetarily by society once they graduate.

While I technically agree about the importance of art, I find that type of education at school almost pointless; save for perhaps SOME of what one can study more in-depth at college for particular careers they're pursuing.

It seems those who are interested in arts that enrich society don't often owe much of their learning to school as much as they do to personal interests/hobbies. As someone who grew up obsessed with the arts and feel as though I know a fair bit about them, I, for one, credit art at school with absolutely none of what I know, enjoy, or am skilled at in regard to them. If anyone deserves credit, it's my mother for allowing me access to her films, books, and the internet and not caring how much of my time I spent alone with them lol. I mean, I knew more about movies and filmmakers than most grownups before I was even in high school. And I wasn't even trying.

Things such as math and science, however, don't quite work the same. Even if one does become interested in them, they're more complicated and not quite as organically appealing to most people. The arts, however, are omnipresent in our society (to a point that's arguably problematic due to their huge influence). They're associated with entertainment mediums that humans naturally gravitate towards (the brain is big on narratives and emotion, not data). You'd be hard-pressed to find anyone not interested in the arts in SOME way. But poke your head out a window and instantly find 20 people who don't understand probability, know the planets in our solar system, or can't grasp the basics of evolution.

Arts may enrich society but math and science create it. We have a rarity of people who understand and enjoy data, the scientific method, and critical thinking, not entertaining narratives and emotional visuals (hence why entertaining stories always beat out more factual ones in the news). To say the math and science crowd is a dime a dozen compared to those in love with the arts is patently absurd.

There's nothing racially motivated about that attack by Simon Pegg at all, nowhere in the article is race mentioned, the only person mentioning race is yourself.

reply

Yes - That's why I specifically said I wasn't sure we could describe it as such nor put that in the thread title.

reply

Fair enough.

He just wants more school kids going into drama and the arts by the sound of it, less and less working class British children (half as much since the 1970’s) are becoming actors, musicians or writers. I guess this is where his fury comes from.

reply

Simon Beckingham is his real name, clearly chose Pegg to sound more 'common' says it all really doesn't it? The man has become very full of himself.

reply

He's an asshole.
I mean the Hollywood guy.

reply

They're both assholes.

reply

I hated math growing up, but Pegg is talking absolute nonsense.

reply

It's hard to derive too much from such a small snippet of a comment, but I get where he's coming from. It's not about hating maths or even maths vs the arts. It's about encouraging the development of creative and varied people vs raising employees.

Wow, Simon Pegg is really making me sad, I really thought he is not a stupid person. There is enough scientific evidence, that Math is essential for a more successful life (https://www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.2013155118).
I can understand that also Arts etc is important, but especially Stars often shows its not the best idea to drop out early out of school or that basic math might be helpful. What I never understood is that Math can create at-risk students. The grade system is OK in itself, but students should be able to select out of a pool of subjects they want to really follow. So a arts student can already concentrate on arts, but never lose complete attachment to math. And vis-versa math students can do arts and sports. I am sure many students just lose interest because of the pressure, not because of the need to do it.

I think the problem is that Pegg is just 100% virtue signalling.

It's all very easy for a millionaire Hollywood "film star" to dismiss the importance of having a solid maths education. But then, I'm not sure having an arts background would have had any impact on his Spaced breakthrough - other than having plenty of time to sit Infront of the box watching the pop culture shows which would later be referenced.

There's also a certain irony - which Pegg obviously doesn't appreciate - that a lot of creative positions in entertainment e.g. the games industry, graphical design, even creative AI programming obviously require strong maths skills, so the two things aren't completely disconnected.

But like I said before, I think it's more just an easy piece of virtue signalling for him. I could be mistaken but I don't recall hearing anything from him when Liz Truss came up with the most outrageously stupid economic plan in decades (which we shall be paying for for decades) which included tax cuts for Britain's wealthiest people, which would have resulted in further cuts to arts budgets! Funny we didn't here anything from him then...
