Brie Larson wants to hear from minority film critics, not just 'white dudes'

The future "Captain Marvel" star used her platform Wednesday night at the Women in Film Crystal + Lucy Awards to drive home new statistics highlighting the dearth of women and minority film critics.

In 2017, only 2.5 % of top critics were women of color, she noted.

"I don’t need a 40-year-old white dude to tell me what didn’t work about A Wrinkle in Time," said Larson. "It wasn’t made for him! I want to know what it meant to women of color, biracial women, to teen women of color."

Larson clarified: "Am I saying I hate white dudes? No, I am not. What I am saying is if you make a movie that is a love letter to women of color, there is an insanely low chance a woman of color will have a chance to see your movie, and review your movie."

In a room full of executives, managers and publicists, Larson called for studios to screen their films for underrepresented critics and include them in their junkets

She also announced that the Sundance and Toronto film festivals will both allocate 20% of press credentials to underrepresented journalists going forward.

If that "Glove" or "Shoe" doesn't fit you, you don't have to wear them. As a male myself there is NOTHING that Brie said that was wrong from my point of view. It is a rare, rare, extremely rare experience when someone who has never ice-skated in their life can tell a story about what it was like Ice-Skating.

The charge that you made of some groups making white males Scapegoated for Racism, Sexism, etc is just so laughable in context. Brie talks about inclusion and you see that as bashing 40-Year Old male virgins, I mean 40-Yr old males?

I couldn't resist including that.

If you had just read with your head and understood what she stated you wouldn't have gotten it so wrong and twisted. Brie asked for more voices to tell richer stories and you see that as White-Male hate and bashing? Are you serious?

No, The man (and in this case the Womb-Man) is NOT sticking it to you.

Jeez relax man.I wasn't attacking Brie specifically.I got nothing against the point she's making that there needs to be more inclusivity. It's just most of the time straight white guys are the ones being shoved under the bus whenever someone jumps on their soapbox and starts rallying on about inclusivity and racism. As if were all against it.As if there's some secret society of heterosexual white men conspiring to keep women down.

Do I sound or type like I am NOT relaxed?

Great Caesar's Ghost man you sound like you're extremely paranoid. Now even buses, soapboxes, inclusivity and racism are attacking straight white males indiscriminately?!! You've even dreamt up a secret society of heterosexual white men that women are accusing of keeping them down? Very clever of those women to convince themselves that there is a Devil that is no Devil.

"The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist."

You came to a Brie Larson board to detail your insecurities but not specifically directed at Brie Larsen? It's okay. We understand. This is a safe place. Brie won't respond.

You're a man. Man up! It's not over! Remember Bluto from Animal House?:

"What? Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!!"

Your either screwing with me or your a ridiculously defensive person. In the words of a rather popular viral video "Aint nobody got time for that".I bid you adieu sir.

You're either screwing with me or you're a ridiculously defensive person.
How is it that I am seemingly ridiculously defensive when it is your very words that seem to betray your insatiable desire to want to be a victim at the hands of all these soapbox rallying women? Methinks thou doth protest and deflect way, way, wayyyyy too much, N'est ce pas?

Didn't you type this to specify your apparent victim status: Can we please stop making straight white dudes the scapegoat for all the racial, sexual and gender injustices in the world lately? I feel like the man and every ones trying to stick it to me. You feels like the man and every ones trying to stick it to you??????!!! Hilarious!!!

Allow me to assist you with what Defensive means: "very anxious to challenge or avoid criticism." You're not criticizing me. Now you would have had a better position if you said that I might be protecting Brie or women too much but truly I'm not.

English must NOT be your first language. Like I said, don't worry. No need to bid the board adieu. You're safe on this board. Those bad women won't come after you, even in "Real" life.

reply

I’ll use great Caesar’s ghost in conversation today.

Can we have less greedy Jew moguls in Hollywood? Nothing against them, I just want richer voices. They don't have experience being working class middle Americans.

That's your opinion although you probably didn't intend it because you are a classist who uses race and sex as a distraction from class. None of the people involved in making her movie needed to be women or colored.

reply

Actually, when you told him to read with his head, you sounded a lot like a dick. And a little before and after, yes, you sounded like a dick. So unless you're a limp dick, you don't come across as relaxed.

reply

Yes she does hate white males. That's the whole point of not mentioning Jews as the most overrepresented groups. Those are the ones who are there because of connections and the ones who are not going to be affected by Sundances Affirmative Action quota. Just like in universities you have legacy spot at one end and Affirmative Action at the other both acting as class warfare against white males.

As an Indian, I am horrified at being discriminated against just because black women have poorer performance as a group than Indian. It should be the other way around.

The novel has Christian and political themes. I suspect the movie replaces them with diversity and self-esteem therapy.

I don’t have a problem with what Brie said. She could have worded her speech a little better. All these blogs and websites are picking out just a few parts of her speech and using them for headlines since they know people will click on it. Then again some people don’t read or watch the whole speech and made up their mind.

reply

white males are toxic

reply

Why does she need someone to tell her what worked, or didn't, in A Wrinkle in Time? A movie written by a white woman based on a book written by a white woman. Maybe Brie should talk to some women of color and get their perspective instead of whining about white men to earn #metoo points. Maybe she should turn down that white man money for white man Marvel movies.

reply

I agree. Too many white critics and run by the whites yet in many of these it is not all white oriented. Glad she speaks up.
