MovieChat Forums > Henry Cavill Discussion > hes gone as Superman

It's a messy business making films.

Cavill, who announced his departure from the Netflix series The Witcher following his return as Superman, reflected on the change in an Instagram post, writing, “I will, after all, not be returning as Superman. After being told by the studio to announce my return back in October, prior to [Gunn and Safran’s] hire, this news isn’t the easiest, but that’s life. The changing of the guard is something that happens. I respect that. James and Peter have a universe to build. I wish them and all involved with the new universe the best of luck, and the happiest of fortunes.”

It was so stupid for him to walk away from Witcher. That tv show was profitable and popular. Its was steady job and relevance. That new Superman movie would be made God knows whenm like in 2-3 years as those big movies have long preparations. There was no date, no script.

Henry could have made more seasons of Witcher no problem. Knowing Netflix they would cancel it after two more seasons anyway. Witcher could even move production date for next season by a year for him. But he jumped and now has no job.

It certainly looks that way now - I wonder if his lawyers will be lodging a claim for compensation?

reply

Are you suggesting he's going to be on the street and destitute now?

"Reboot All and kick out everyone" is stupid. Those movies had an audience. Lots of money was spend on promotion of those characters and actors. People got used to them. They didnt get MCU money but still were profitable.

Now they would have to hire new actors, then start spending millions promoting them. That Pattinson Batman got $370 millions at USA box-office solely on name of character. And they think any new movie will get those numbers. But its was lower than any regular MCU movie, even Doctor Strange 2 could crack 400 millions. And Batman was their most famous property. And that Pattinson movie is so forgettable that no one even remembers it and rewatches. People talked about Battfleck for years. But that Pattinson movie came and went and was forgotten next week. Same will be with new Superman movie. It will get some 247 millions and be forgotten next week.

I assume they think actors are too old and want to bring younger actors. Gal Gadot is 37, Henry Cavill is 39. Well they need to hire 24 years old then to have them be young enough for 15 years. Henry Cavill was 29 when he was cast and only had 9 years run. Gal Gadot was 31 when she was cast.

The Rock is freacking 50 years old. And they cast him as some young superhero then wonder why no one cared. Jason Momoa is 43 years old.

Honestly - I kinda understand their move. Actors are too old now to jump around like they are 25. But still they could have milked that cow for few years. They should have release Wonder Woman 3 and new Superman movie to give it proper closure. And say nice goodbuy to actors. And fans would be satisfied. Then reboot.

But this was badly done.

I'll miss Cavill as Superman and I think he could have done another ten years. They could CGI to de-age him and give him muscles. I believe they used CGI to buff up that waif Natalie Portman for Lady Thor. I liked the serious tone of the DC movies versus the non-stop jokes of the MCU. James Gunn mostly does comedic superhero movies/shows like Guardians of the Galaxy, Suicide Squad and Peacemaker. I'm concerned that Gunn's DCU will be like the sixties Batman show.

Robert Downey, Jr. was 42 when he started as Iron Man and played the character for over ten years.

Cavill is still young enough to play Superman.

I agree with you, Cavill’s Superman needed a proper closure.

reply

Well eventually Robert Downey, Jr. did become too old to play that role and he just quit. It was probably too hard for him physically each year.

MCU has same problem with aging actors. 40 years old men look ridiculous when they run around in spandex. Its one thing when its 23 years old. Like one director said - those characters act like they are in college. They have no family, they are in love but never truly are. Only Hewkeye had a family and movies tried to ignore that and showed them for 2 minutes than hide them again. And actors was way too old to play that character.

reply

But there are ways to make the characters more adult.

In the comics, Superman does marry Lois Lane and they have a mature relationship.

I would have no issue with adult Superheroes in stable relationships, dealing with adult problems.

reply

Nah. There is that CW show when Lois and Clark have two teenages sons and its just boring.

reply

Lol, haven’t seen it. But, like with anything, it comes down to the quality of the writing, directing and acting.

Even as a kid, I enjoyed reading the comics that included Lois and Clark married.

reply

Yeah its easy to see why its happening, its not just the main players 'aging out' but also the supporting casts - post Cavil announcing his return in October there was rumours of MoS2 being prepared, but Amy Adams is almost 50, no Jimmy Olsen (unless they retconned him getting his brains blown out in BvS), no one liked Eisenberg as Lex. and those are major characters for any Superman film (and of course BvS was clearly MoS2). There were even (fantastical) rumours of Synders JL2 somewhere down the line (but that seemed unlikely after the fiasco of JL, despite the SynderCut being deemed quite a worthy film).

Then there's the whole Ezra Miller thing (WB will obviously want him gone after The Flash is done, which is now most likely being retooled as a kind of farewell for DCEU which it was originally rumored to be like a rebooting/resetting of the DCEU via multiverse - so maybe Affleck and Cavil final cameos?), the WW3 problem (after WW84 bombed even though covid/streaming. seems Synder was heavily involved in WW1, whereas 84 was all PJenkins - so thats cancelled now), even Aquaman 2 is kind of a problem (Amber Heard) and it must also a problem for Gunn as its due Dec 23 so always on the horizon as Gunns developing his new DCU (maybe they'll move it to summer? and Affleck probably won't cameo now), and just the general fall out from all the Synder MoS/BvS/JL problems (all 3 films underperformed, finically and critically .. MoS was most well received but even that didn't really hit with general audiences despite the stellar cast/Nolans involvement almost making it an extension if TDK trilogy, BvS we know was near reviled by critics and audiences and didn't break the magic 1b, JL pretty much a disaster than crippled DCEU)

But with Gunn coming in wanting to make his own mark and create a new 'DCU' it was inevitable the 'DCEU' was toast, despite Cavills seeming return due to Black Adam, which it kind of bombing being the final nail in the coffin of DCEU..WBros must've been like 'well so much much for everyone going nuts on twitter about Cavill'. (I guess the main players probably secretly wish he'd stayed cancelled so would've never been able to take over DC)

of course they'll all be back when WBros need them in some multiverse movie like DCs version of Secret Wars in about 5 years time lol

reply

Well, I guess now they'll all just move onto Marvel at some point.

reply

I think its happening because WB screwed this up from the beginning. Instead of having a Plan and getting someone who knew his shit like Marvel did. WB just hired the first guy to say "I kind of like Comics (also if i made Batman Begins, Batman would be raped in Prison, no joke he said that). Instead of introducing all the character in individual movies that would built up to a big event movie. They did Superman, Justice League Lite (aka BvS) to Justice League. They were rushing to be keep of the the big boys. They had no idea what they were doing.

reply

How many years ago was Man Of Steel? Isn't he getting too old.

reply

Sucks. He was almost as good as Reeve was in the roll. Great Superman. He's 39, which isn't that old and they are good at making people look a little younger. He had a few years left as a believable Superman.

reply

I don't know about that. Reeve had a lot charm and charisma, plus i think Reeve was better actor. The only time Cavill semi-wowed with acting was when he was playing the bad guy in Mission Impossible Fallout. As Superman hes kind of wooden.

reply

It's because of the 'stache

reply

Zach Snyder fans screwed up DCEU. They wouldn’t be doing this if he didn’t have such a toxic fan base.

reply

I would say Zack Snyder screwed it up.

reply

Well, we're off to a great start with Gunn's DC universe. :(

reply

Well, Gunn did warn ahead of time that what comes next won't make some people happen. Guess he wasn't lying.
