Are there any other "big name" actors like Bruce Willis that had a very tragic and surreal end to their careers?

The one that immediately comes to my mind is Bela Lugosi ending his career by starring in Ed Wood movies.

Val Kilmer

Val Kilmer since his battle with cancer. Though hopefully Top Gun 2 will be the first step to a comeback.

I don't think that Val Kilmer will ever be able to make a full-scale comeback (at least as a leading man in major productions) given that his voice has been severely compromised due to his cancer ordeal. I think that in his last few films, his voice needed to be dubbed because his natural speaking voice has been reduced to a near unintelligible rasp.

I believe I read about a year ago about a device that has been created for Kilmer in which his "normal" voice is replicated through AI... something along the lines of a "Siri or Alexa" but based on Val Kilmer's voice recordings which he's able (or will soon be able to) use to communicate... even with this I doubt he will ever make a 100% comeback, but it's sure nice to see him back in some capacity and getting better with each day.

Also, if you've seen Val Kilmer in recent times, he looks really frail and run down. It's like his cancer ordeal really kicked his butt and aged him (Val is I believe 63 years old now).

My mom is about his age... early 60s... she also had cancer (not throat) and after chemo and all the therapy, surgeries... she is not the same either. Terrible.

Why do they have to be "big name" stars? The case of Jack Wild is particularly tragic (he played the Artful Dodger in the Oliver! musical).

In sports, there was Lou Gehrig.

Well Sean Connery and Gene Hackman retired quite suddenly and inexplicably

I always heard that Sean Connery was the first choice to play Gandalf in Lord of the Rings but he turned it down because he apparently didn't understand the script and/or he didn't want to commit to such a time consuming project. Sean Connery would've made a lot of money had he taken it.

So he winds up doing The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. He apparently, didn't really understand the concept with that either but figured, that he would look like a dummy had he turned down another potential blockbuster. Of course, we all know the rest, it was pretty much the movie that convinced him to retire.

I've heard that several times about Connery turning down LOTR because he didn't understand it. Pity. I think he'd have done a great job as Gandalf. Apparently at one point they were looking for him to star as the captain in a remake of The Ghost and Mrs Muir but it never got off the ground. That's another role that I think he's have been fantastic in.

Gene Hackman is 93 and doing what many in their 90s do, living a quiet life in retirement.

Sean Connery had finally enough money and likely also got sour that he rejected Gandalf for the turd of "League of extraordinary Gentlemen", but he had such hit and miss always in his career. He mostly retired, because he was old and didn't need to act in movies anymore and had his pet project of Scottish independence. But in his later years he had also dementia, so maybe he got also the diagnose and decided to retire because of that. But he definitely had 10 more good years before dementia showed its really ugly face. His last years were like any other poor dementia person (something I don't wish anyone!)

Christopher Reeve comes to mind with that horse accident that paralyzed him for life

I can never get over the supreme irony of arguably, the definitive live-action Superman portrayer becoming a quadriplegic in like, the last decade or so in his life. It's just like I get depressed seeing Val Kilmer in his current state after remembering him for his arguably underrated portrayal of Batman.

reply

I'm probably the only one who thought Val Kilmer was miscast as BATMAN.. Bruce Wayne has a very distinguihsed look and Val Kilmer never came to mind and then of course, BATMAN & ROBIN was the nail in the coffin.. Imagine if Nolan weren't around to reboot this franchise and what would've came of this had he not??

reply

In fairness, a lot of people initially thought that Michael Keaton was miscast as Batman because he didn't exactly fit into their perception of what Bruce Wayne should look like.

Michael Keaton will always be the Best BATMAN
