reply

Denzel would be singing a different tune if a white actor had slapped Chris Rock.

reply

The outrage would be x10.

reply

x10,000

reply

Probably true. This is a guy who has no moral roots or human understanding. Denzel turns my stomach to say something like that ... and not only him by Tyler Perry? Bill Cosby ... is there a black pattern here, and how do we honestly compare it to whites or anyone else - because the whole society is build around making rich people and famous people saints no matter what they do.

reply

Nobody has the right to judge Will Smith’s behavior at the Oscars? What a ridiculous thing to say. I’ve generally enjoyed Denzel’s performances and since he appeared to have led a scandal-free life, just assumed he was a level-headed fellow. It’s disappointing to learn otherwise.

reply

That's not what he said, though. He said "who are we to condemn", which is not the same as saying "we have no right to judge". Judge is something we all do, to everyone, as a matter of course. Judging someone is not the same as condemning them. What Denzel is saying is, directly, "there, but for the grace of God, go I" - and paraphrased: "hate the sin, love the sinner".

reply

Its kind of like quoting Jesus, "let he who is without sin, cast the first stone". lol

Its cute but not very original. Sure, we can judge what Smith did because it was appalling, but yeah, it's not the first time someone has lost their temper like this. In my view, it's just surprising for a 53 year old to go off like this though. Most people that age are a little more in control of their emotions and wiser. There are several different ways Will could have handled this. Surely he could have done it without choosing a slap and cursing Rock out at a formal event.

Just sayin....

reply

I think it was more deliberate than impulsive. Given his history with Jada, I think Will was trying to re-affirm himself as a manly man to her - salvage some respect. Maybe it was for the audience's benefit as well. After all, thanks to Jada, Will has recently gotten a reputation as, well, a cuck. He wanted to show what a macho man he is. I don't think he counted on it backfiring the way it did.

reply

Yep, this is perhaps a good reason why it's better to keep your sex life under wraps. No one needs to know you let your wife sleep around.

Whatever they do in their private lives is up to them, but Jada shouldn't announce it to the world. At least that's what I heard she did on her pod-cast or whatever show she has. idk...

Not a good idea to go public with that.

reply

She announced it because she has no shame. Adultery is normal in their world which is why they are both depraved. I dont say that to condemn but she is a sinner who needs to repent.

reply

Will's problems are Will's problems and it is up to Will to be man enough ,and enough of a human being to keep it to himself. Isn't he paid enough to overlook that crap - and what Chris Rock said was not any kind of insult or anything even bad .. the guy its an immoral, psychopath, and he needs to go to jail, get charged, get convicted and then go to real jail for 1-6 months in my opinion.

reply

So we may judge him but, if we find him guilty (as I do), not condemn him? Thankfully most people still blame sinners and seek to hold them accountable.

reply

Blaming people and holding them accountable is still not the same as condemning. You can blame someone, hold them accountable, and nevertheless understand them.

reply

I already understand him: he lacks impulse control and is prone to violence. He should be held accountable by the justice system and shunned by polite society, including the Academy. It must go further than condemning the behavior. Hate the sin and love the reformed sinner who has paid his debt to society. Smith cannot claim to be the latter.

reply

I already understand him: he lacks impulse control and is prone to violence.

I don't think this had anything to do with impulse control or the lack of it. I think he wanted to fulfill Jada's expectations of him - to be Mr. Macho Man. In so doing, I think he deliberately acted contrary to what he actually wanted himself.

He should be held accountable by the justice system

Only if Chris Rock presses charges - which he would be most unwise to do, as he would appear petty and weak, and Will would gain sympathy for having been punished disproportionately to his crime. Shame is the real punishment of any actual punishment anyway.

and shunned by polite society, including the Academy. It must go further than condemning the behavior.

Condemning the behaviour isn't merely saying "I condemn this behaviour". Condemnation entails actual consequences, such as being quarantined from the academy for a while. Which, by the way, he has voluntarily undertaken.

Smith cannot claim to be the latter.

What would you expect him to do if he could so claim?

reply

I've never liked him, and when I've listened to him talk about anything that's all I've heard, is confusing BS. Now I really cannot stand him and I know why.

reply

We're all witnesses to a felony, that's who we are to condemn!

reply

Yeah, Washington is a f-ing idiot immoral ahole.
How come we have a country where the f-ing idiot immoral aholes seem to run everything and have all the money? I've never liked that guy, and in general whenever I think I like an actor ... I have to remind myself, he is the scenery and someone else wrote that part and is that person or character. America is such a screwed up country probably because in large part we consume the most of this Hollywood nonsense BS.

reply

I've never liked Denzel Washington, and what a fracking turd.
I guess black Hollywood is just as disgusting as White Hollywood.
I listened to all the double-talk nonsense, and Washington is a
true idiot ahole.

reply

so you can assault anyone as long as they don't die ?

reply

Who are we to condemn?

Well, we're society aren't we? So if we don't condemn, doesn't that mean we're now saying - you know what, if someone says something you don't like, even if it's just a joke, it's perfectly ok to go up to them and open palm slap them hard across the face. No legal repercussions...

Is that where we are now? As a society? It's ok to go up and slap anyone if you don't like what they're saying?

Can some wee kid just go up another in the playground if they don't like what was said to them and wallop them across the face?

Can some dude now slap another guy in a bar if he says something insulting?

Is that the new rules in society because Will Smith was ok to do it because some guy said something about his missus?

Totally crazy...

reply

You act like getting slapped is extremely dangerous. Have some understanding of nuance, will you? Everything is on a scale. Should you get arrested for poking someone, flicking them, pinching them, slapping, or punching? Each has it's own severity and situation attached to it. Some people who use self defense end up in jail simply because people like you want everything to be black and white. Chris wasn't in any kind of severe danger and we're already seeing the consequences Will is having to endure because of his action.

Cool your jets guy

reply

No one mentioned poking or flicking.

No understand of nuance required, no talk of "self defense" was mentioned. I simply said are we now accepting that it's ok specifically to go and slap someone if we don't like what they said. I just find that incredibly weird - severe danger or not!

As long as its open palmed then we as society are now accepting that that is ok...

reply

I think that a one time slap has already been established as ok. Woman on man, man on man, but not man on woman. Wasn't that already established before this incident?
