time to make real movies again

enough of these action movies

reply

These are "real movies" for him. I respect his work ethic and the success he's achieved, but he really is an average actor.

reply

I'd like to see him doing something dark with Fincher. Or maybe delve into the indie scene. He is indeed very limited as an actor but Kubrick knew how to use him and so did Paul Thomas Anderson so perhaps working with an auteur might lead to an interesting performance for a change.

reply

Kubrick hated him and regretted working with him and Kidman. Anderson managed to draw a single tear out of him. Both Magnolia and EWS would have been much better with someone else in Cruise's roles, regardless of nominations. Ethan Hunt is hia Magnum Opus and the role that suits him best. Next is Jerry Maguire (who is, basically, an annoying A-hole).

reply

How about "Collateral"? That to me is his defining role. The movie itself was "meh" but he was superb. He needs to play bad guys not heroes because from Ethan Hunt to Jerry Maguire he just comes across as an asshole. But the worst was "A Few Good Men." You're support to be rooting for him but his overacting and cocky demeanor makes you root for Jessup, his nemesis, instead.

reply

Tom Cruise has one mode: cocky prick.

reply

He's pretty amazing at that, though.

reply

Yes, he's milked it now for thirty plus years. That must be some kind of record indeed.

reply

"Cocky prick" was what made him - Top Gun, Color of money, Cocktail, A few good men, The Firm...

reply

He can carry all of that cockiness to the bank.

reply

Imagine Terrence Malick directing him.

reply

He should play a villain next... even his haters will end up loving him in that role...

He was great in edge of tomorrow where he plays a war mongering careerist coward... so good...

The guy is a star... even the hollywood hate machine couldnt keep him down... Solid actor too

reply

"Collateral" was arguably his best performance.

reply

True. I loved it in Tropic Thunder!

reply

Hollywood doesn't make real movies anymore.

reply

Good movies exist; it just takes more effort sometimes to find them.

reply

yeah? like which one?? let me guess. Get Out?? Please.

reply

I like "slow burn" horror movies so admittedly I enjoyed "Get Out." Yes, the ending was a let-down. And, this kind of material, would probably have worked better as a thirty-minute "Twilight Zone" episode. Still, it held my attention throughout (which is more than I can say for Nolan's latest -- a truly overrated bore-fest).

You're going to laugh but "Megan Leavy" surprised me. Not great but tolerable.

The other Mara -- Rooney -- did a movie called "A Ghost Story" I enjoyed. Again, it's not great, and it's not for everybody, but it's quirkiness, and utter departure from the superhero norm, engaged me.

"Mother" looks awesome. I'm hoping that breaks the drought we're in right now, cinematically-speaking.

reply

As I said no real films are being made. And they all look so incredibly ugly with the digital aesthetic. Of course I still have films I want to see like The Snowman and Killing Of A Sacred Deer but I am aware that film is certifiably dead.

reply

"A Ghost Story" was a real movie. And "Mother" looks like it might shape up to be a real movie too.

"Snowman" looked like a trailer parody (like something you might see in "Grindhouse"). But Fassbender is great so I'll probably buy a ticket.

I agree with you about digital. Film is where it's at. Some filmmakers still swear by film ... though they're becoming fewer and fewer.

reply

Nothing Jennifer Lawrence stars in can be good and Aronofsky has demonstrated over and over that Requiem For A Dream was a fluke, not seeing that one.

The thing with film is that, it doesn't matter if you use film if the movie is going to be digitally color corrected. Batman vs. Superman may have been shot on film, it still looks like shit because of digital color grading and other digital effects and corrections.

reply

I think Ed Harris, Michelle Pfeiffer and Javier Bardem more than make up for Lawrence.

And "Black Swan" and "The Wrestler" were good. Not "Requiem" good ... but good.

reply

Nothing is worse paying for Jennifer Lawrence.

reply

I would like to see him go back to making trippy movies like Eyes Wide Shut and Vanilla Sky. Paul Thomas Anderson may be a good fit for Cruise for such a project.

reply

I think Tom's just making the most of his remaining fairly athletic years. Once he's officially old, he'll go back to making real movies again.
