Do you think America is the greatest country in the world?

Yes

reply

No.

reply

In some ways, yes

But, in a lot of ways, no.

PS- this may be better off in the Polotics board.

To quote an Elvis Costello song: 'It was a fine idea at the time / now it's a brilliant mistake.'

But more seriously...

No, I don't believe the USA is the greatest country in the world. I don't even really know what that would mean. How would we measure that? Against what criteria? How many league tables would a country need to top for health and education outcomes and whatnot to be considered the overall 'greatest'? Who knows?

I don't believe there is such a thing as a greatest country in the world. I'm not sure it's useful to attempt to rank nation-states except when you're measuring something very specific and quantifiable. 'Greatness' is neither of those things.

I'm sure the USA, just like most places, has its merits and its demerits. (And, of course, it's vast and very varied so things you'd say about one place wouldn't be true of another anyway.)

In any case, there are no utopias.

reply

+1. This exactly.

reply

you people are being to modest with your answers

WE HAVE THE LARGEST MILITARY IN THE WORLD, WE BULLY EVERYONE

BUT IT'S TOO CORRUPT
the top of the pyramid always gets what they want and the bottom 80 or 70 percent are slaves that's a plutocracy NOT a democracy!!!

We have too much lobbying and quid pro quo from CPACS in elections!!!

Spending money from CPACS is not free speech!!! THEY INFLUENCE LEGISLATION AND LOBBYING
How can we call ourselves a democracy when CPACS spend money on political candidates?
that's not free speech to influence legislation and lobbying.
We are a plutocracy by those standards and by the pyramid example by definition.

Media never shuts up about our democracy when it's misleading. It's not true.
It's a prime example of American propaganda.

reply

Kazakhstan is greatest country in the world. All other countries are run by little girls.

reply

There's no such thing as the greatest country in the world. How would you even measure something like that? The USA has some good things for sure, but we also have a lot of problems, just like every other country.

reply

I agree. Also, what's the point of stating something like that?

reply

Yes, as Capuchin stated it's impossible to measure such a thing as 'greatest country.'
I'm sure the English, the French and the Germans all think they are the best, it's normal to love your country, especially in a first world, organized country.

I DO think America is the greatest but I have a normal bias for the land I was raised in and love.

reply

Well, we're Great Britain, aren't we? So -- objectively speaking -- we are the best. That's just science.

reply

LOL!

I'm writing a letter to Congress requesting we rebrand as 'Great America' :)

reply

Yeah....that could apply to the entire western hemisphere. ๐Ÿ˜

reply

but we also have a lot of problems, just like every other country.

Other countries don't have Kowalski.

reply

You always seem to type what I'm thinking. A lot of countries have great things about them, and a lot of problems.

reply

No, but I probably would if I were American.

reply

Fair and reasonable post.

I think unless you're born in Somalia or Mexico or some other terribly ravaged nation you probably think your country is best.

"Greatest Country" is hard to measure.

In America we enjoy a good deal of upward mobility, we can make investments, start businesses, seek further education and so forth. But we do have a ridiculous amount of mass shootings, drug misuse and homelessness.

I LOVE America but we do have a bit of work to do over here.

reply

It used to be.

Dictator Joe has ruined my Country.

reply

No we could do better in regards healthcare like other countries

I like the private system better because you could pick your own doctor. With public, you're stuck with one and you often have to deal with long waiting lists.

Here you can choose between many good doctors (public system).
