What are some movies that you were surprised to learn are actually considered "bad"?

These are some that I can recall, that genuinely surprised me when I finally got on the Internet & stuff.

Some bombed at the box office, most were panned by critics & some were the butt of jokes.

1. Waterworld (1995) - It was on tv a lot growing up & my friend & I freaking loved it.

2. Baby's day out (1994) - I have not seen this one in ages but man, this was watched so many freaking times by the whole household.

3. Wild Wild West (1999) - Even as an adult, I like this one. It's not great but man it's a fun watch

4. Last Action Hero (1993) - Saw this a teen & I freaking loved it. Charles Dance is excellent in it

5. Over the Top (1987) - One of Sly Stallone's forgotten films. Freaking loved this one growing up. Would watch I every time it was on TV.

most M. Night Shyamalan movies

'Lady in the Water' (2006) is a gem, indeed.

reply

I liked The Village as well.

reply

Ditto! I love everything about the film

reply

Problem Child 1990 - It has a 0% score on rotten tomatoes.

reply

What? For real? Saw that as an adult and it's freaking hilarious!

reply

Agree, but it's not just mindless comedy, the story does have a bit of heart with Ben just wanting to a father, and junior acting out because no one ever cared about him. It gives the outrageous stuff that happens a bit more gravity. I liked this movie as a kid and as a adult because I could relate to both sides of that relationship.

Personally I've always considered Problem Child to be similar to Home Alone, maybe slightly below it. But I don't understand how it's bad, or shouldn't exist.

reply

Part 2 is worse and part 3 is even worse.

reply

Never saw the sequels but the first one is genuine laugh out loud funny

reply

PROBLEM CHILD 2 ROCKS HARD....IT IS CONSIDERED BY MANY FANS TO BE THE BEST OF THE SERIES...3 IS UNRELATED GARBAGE.

reply

Better than the first one? Gotta put it on the list then.

reply

I don’t know if that is considered the consensus. But again, Problem Child 2 has a 7% on RT and it’s a 4.8 on IMDb. I think they are better than that.

reply

For me, it's less home alone & more Dennis the Menace.

My favorite Dennis movie being the one with Walter Mathau. It did well financially but it has a 5 on imdb & 27% on RT.

reply

I actually like 2 better than the original movie now. I think both movies were hated when they came out as they are pretty mean spirited as kids movies.

Blade Runner (1982) a cult classic it didn't do well at the box office.
Cobra (1986) Action packed Stallone film that pretty much bombed at release.
Suicide Kings (1997)? Dark comedy featuring Christopher Walken, very underrated...

reply

Love Cobra! Didn't know it was a bomb.

reply

i saw cobra in the theater and loved it.
did you know it started as the script for Beverly Hills Cop?

reply

Cobra is good but has a certain flatness about it. I think in 1986 if Stallone wasn't Rocky or Rambo people were going to be disappointed.

Catwoman (2004)  3.4/10  /tt0327554

reply

Agreed. I really enjoyed it!

reply

The Big Hit (1998). People call it "The Big Shit" and I will not stand for the trash talking of this piece of cinema.

reply

Lou Diamond Phillips steals that movie! It's so over the top & a fun time.

reply

Every. Damn. Scene.

reply

I JUST CAN'T STAND THE IDEAR OF ANYONE NOT LIKING ME.

reply

The hundred or so people you've killed in the last five years, more than likely have families that don't think too highly of you.

reply

That movie is flat out hilarious.

reply

I've seen it so many times.

reply

YOU FUCKER...WHY DO WE HAVE SHIT IN COMMON?...I HATE THAT...UGH...THE BIG HIT IS FUCKING AWESOME.

WHAT THE FUCK HAPPENED TO CHINA CHOW?...SHE WAS IN A BUNCH OF STUFF...AND THEN NOTHING.

reply

After she dated Keanu, she became irrelevant.

reply

Daredevil (2003) I’m not big in superhero films but like this one. I don’t understand the hate but then I never read the daredevil comics either.

Rock Star (2001) an accurate depiction of 80’s metal culture.

reply

'Rock Star' was an awesome film. I didn't know anybody didn't like it.

reply

It is awesome but it bombed at the box office and was panned by the critics. Personally a movie being panned by critics is usually a sign it is pretty good. When critics love a film it is usually going to be boring.

reply

Now that I think of it, I do remember people thinking that Walburg was miscast; but like you stated, it was a pretty good film, Walburg was great, plus Zakk Wylde is there and the music is great.

LONG LIVE JUDAS PREIST!!!

reply

There are so many actual rockers in there it's great. The actors playing rock stars do well too, I think the Marky Mark thing went against him as far as the public went. In the closing credits he mocks the 80's metal scene as well which I thought was cringeworthy given he just played one. I know it was outtakes and a joke but it probably shouldn't have been included.

But overall I thought he was very convincing.

reply

Saw that when I was a teen. Wasn't familiar with Daredevil as well. Thought it was fine.

Hot take, I liked Elektra more. Not just more than Daredevil, I actually enjoyed the movie.

Haven't seen either of 'em since then tho...

reply

I didn't like Elektra much, been a while but I think the mysticism was a bit much for me. Been a while since I have seen it though so it might be worth a fresh viewing. I liked her character in Daredevil and Garner's portrayal so I was bummed at the time that I wasn't into it.

reply

I love Elektra!

reply

The Ninth Gate (1999) I heard that it didn't go well at cinemas and has a mediocre rating at IMDb (in rotten tomatoes it's even worse) tho, it is in my top 10 best movies of all time

reply

Wow, That was actually recommended to me just few weeks ago.

Looked it up, sounded interesting & it's definitely on my list.

reply

Definitely a heavily derided movie but I love it.

Anaconda (1997) - Saw this several times over the years growing up. Was on TV all the time and my cousin plus a few friends all had it on VHS. This movie was very popular amongst young boys, it was cool as shit! As I grew older and went on the internet in movie circles I was surprised to learn that a lot of people think it's awful. It's got a measly 4.9 on IMDb. I watched it about two years ago and it's still good fun. You won't see me telling anyone it's an all time masterpiece but it's a fun creature-feature. Serves it's purpose.

reply

I PICKED UP ANACONDA ON BLU RAY FOR A BUCK THIS WEEKEND....GREAT/TERRIBLE MOVIE.

reply

Oh yeah, I'd definitely agree on that. Watched it with my mom back in the day. Kid me loved it, adult me still enjoys it.

reply

I really like Anaconda too.
Jon Voight's ridiculous South American accent is simply priceless lol. Fun crappy movie.
