aguirre
dogtooth

spider-man: into the spider-verse

reply

Fury road was a fun action movie but... really? I rated it 7.5/10

reply

i think it's perfect! every time i watch it, i get completely wrapped up in its spectacle.

i know it has its detractors, but for me, large scale epic action films don't get any more exciting & raw than that.

reply

I only saw it once. I own it though so I'll have to check it out a second time eventually.

reply

i don't miss movie theatres all that much, but if fury road ever plays in a big room with a massive sound system anywhere near me again, nothing will keep me away from that!

reply

Interesting choices.

The Thing (1982)
Platoon
First Blood
The Return of the Living Dead (1985)
After Hours (1985)
The Bounty (1984)
The Wanderers (1979)
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)
Once Upon a Time in America
Jaws

reply

Great list, I need to watch After Hours again I think, I've only ever seen it once.

reply

Love all these.

reply

Mine's a more predictably low-brow list.

Raiders of the Lost Ark
Predator
The Thing
Aliens
Star Trek 2
Empire Strikes Back
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
Terminator
Goodfellas

and the one more prestigious entry ...

Seven Samurai

(this list compiled by how much I enjoy them rather than what I would consider "best made" or "highest quality")

Some candidates just miss the list mostly due to the fact that I have not watched them in over 20 years and need to reevaluate them. The Sting for instance.

reply

All of those would be in my top 20!

I should have Predator in my top 10 really, it's probably my most quotable movie.

reply

Look up the original script online for Predator. The little differences are cool to see.

reply

No more low brow than mine.

reply

At least half of your list would make my top 20. A few I'd argue over suds with you.

reply

Sounds like a plan 🍻

1. Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (2004)
2. Chariots of Fire (1981)
3. Avalon (1990)
4. Local Hero (1983)
5. Inside Out (2015)
6. Dunkirk (2017)
7. Green Card (1990)
8. Silver Streak (1976)
9. Quicksilver (1986)
10. Epic (2013)

reply

You get ***** for #3. Avalon (1990)

Great pick!

This is Barry Levinson's best film.

reply

Although most people prefer Diner, Avalon is by far Levinson's best film.

He's in his late 70s now, but lost his touch as a filmmaker after his time working in television (Homicide: Life on the Streets).

Ironic, considering how television is depicted as a cultural disruptor in Avalon.

reply

I think most prefer "Rainman".

But Diner is great. All 3 are.

reply

Sky Captain is an unusual selection.

reply

Well, we don't have similar taste is all I can say!

reply

I heard the name - I had to look who the director is. He's done some decent films.

Aliens 3 - No
Seven - Hated this film.
The Game? - I'm the only person who liked this film.
Fight Club - It was interesting.
Panic Room - You can't go wrong with Jodie Foster. 7 out of 10 stars.
Zodiac - I'll have to watch it again.
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008) Very good film.
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - It just laid there. No.
The Social Network - NO

reply

I don't care much for Zodiac. I found it long and boring and I feel like Im the only one on earth.

I also like The game so you're not alone.

Panic room sucked.

reply

I like these.

reply

I might be wrong but I think they made movies before 1970? Hmmm. Turn the kaleidoscope.

reply

Some of the best. The 70s and 60s are my favorites, but I love movies before then, too.
