The BBC won't play Fairytale of New York this xMas

BBC Radio 1 will not play the original version of Fairytale of New York by The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl this Christmas, because its audience may be offended by some of the lyrics. No kidding.

The station said young listeners were particularly sensitive to derogatory terms for gender and sexuality.

Evil white male oppressors, feel free to enjoy this fascist racist evil far-right masterpiece:

That was a very silly 'controversy' too, that guy was just trying to get laid...
that's not unheard of

reply

Meanwhile, Cardi B. is telling everyone to eat her ass....

lol

reply

Yeah🙄

That chubby corner pig can eat ALL of my disinterest lol

reply

W3rD!

reply

Because they mention the NYPD?

reply

I fucking hate censors. What kind of a grinch-heart do you have to have to be a media censor?

reply

I have to say, though, I've benefited from their decision, since it laid the first domino that led me to listen to a couple good versions of the song today.

This one I hadn't heard before:

reply

Yeah I heard this too 🙄. People need to be educated in the context of language (and the era this song was made,) . She is just generally insulting him, there's nothing sexual about it. But as language meanings have changed over the years the younger generations perceive it as something different.

The term 'faggot' is not common in referring to a homosexual in the UK. Especially at the time this song came out.

A faggot to me is a spiced meaty dish, similar to meatballs served with gravy.

reply

You're right, but it seems that some people are overly sensitive to insults that were related to gender or sexual orientation.

What amuses me is that the same (very progressive) people who are extremely offended by these words... they are the first ones that try to shame suggesting somebody else is not man enough (which was the original intended meaning of 'faggot' used as an insult). Irony is a bitch.

That happened to me a couple of days ago:

reply

Maybe tell that to the gay men who had the word repeatedly yelled at them as their heads were kicked in.

It doesn't matter what the word is 'to you' or what it was in 1987, to a generation of people it's a nasty slur and if you ever have the misfortune to hear the song in the presence of crowds of lads, you'll hear the way they yell FAGGOT at the top of their lungs in a rejoicing cry following by a big laugh. If the word meant 'nothing' this wouldn't happen.

That the Pogues themselves endorsed its removal - and also the word 'slut' - should be enough.

reply

I thought they’d censored it years ago?!

reply

They did, there was a backlash and they got back the song.

That was years ago. Nowadays it's different: there's a backlash, and the media say that people who complain are racist incels nazi far-right sexist evil whites who hate everything.

reply

Oh ok....
As above, the term ‘faggot’ isn’t used here as slang for or as a slur on homosexuals; it’s a basic meatball....as well as an old English word for a bunch of twigs, sticks etc for use on a fire!
There’s even traditions in some counties of the Christmas Faggot, like a Yule Log!

reply

I guess you won’t mind me calling you a faggot then, will you, you fucking FAGGOT?

No offence, of course. Please don’t be too sensitive about it you pathetic fucking faggot.

Well, this is my answer to a very similar comment a couple of weeks ago:

https://moviechat.org/general/General-Discussion/5fb11e79e894b965cba7d489/Funny-fact-Im-finding-that-novels-aimed-to-females-seem-to-be-the-only-ones-that-arent-invaded-by-woke-feminism?reply=5fb22d1f08646c089882e487

And let me quote the final part of my answer, since it applies here:

«In their mind, wokes see non-wokes as some kind of "macho men" that spend their time either raping women or shaming men for not being enough "macho".

Meanwhile, in the real world, last years, the only shaming attempts I've seen for allegedly not being enough "macho" came from... wokes like you.

Which btw supports my theory that wokes are not the new liberals. You're the new Christian fundamentalists.
»

Funny how those who keep using 'faggot' as an frequent insult... are the wokes.

reply

If you didn’t catch on that I was only using the term ironically then you are as clueless as you are perpetually outraged at your imagined woke threat.

That’s how it has been used towards me. Get it? But I shouldn’t be offended should I? That just makes me a snowflake according to you.

reply

Sure, ironically. 😄

It's interesting how often wokes go into that kind of "faggot!!", "you're gay!!!", "you're a lady!!!" insults to be just... "ironic".

reply

I’m gay. That’s the irony. I was using the term as it had been used towards me. So you might understand that it’s not fun and something I have every right to be offended by. Get it simpleton?

reply

Hi Tim :)

reply

Well, wokeness is about constant guilt. And the constant white hating is (in many cases if not most) fed by wokes that are white, that are the ones promoting the "evil white males" narrative. At the end of the day, wokeness is a lot about self-hate, they chose to worship one the of the most toxic elements in Judeo-Christian culture.

So you're a gay... and you chose to use the term "faggot" to insult me. Why doesn't it surprise me?

reply

You’re a fucking idiot. Go away.
