Okay guys...we're on the cusp of a return to decent box ofiice

Next week with the release of Tenet. 57 million overseas may be a good sign for its domestic performance.

Fingers crossed.

reply

I want my local theaters to survive and they need new movies to be successful. Warner Bros. is hoping Tenet will play for months and it'll have to if they want to make money from it.

reply

I recently went through my box of Blu-rays and wrote them all down so I don't buy one that I already have (again). I have 54 of them, and the newest one that I specifically bought is from 1993 (Demolition Man). I have a few that are newer than that, but they were either given to me or included in box sets along with the older movies that I actually wanted (Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull [2008] was included in my Indiana Jones box set, for example).

I wouldn't care if another movie was never made. The vast majority of 21st century movies that I've seen have been okay at best and highly forgettable. And to make matters worse, they hardly ever shoot on film anymore, and the left-wing slant gets worse every year, which makes me care even less about them.

It used to be worth it to go to the theater just for the big screen and big sound, even if the movie wasn't all that great, but since I got a projector a few years ago, I like watching movies at home better than in a theater. My projection screen isn't as big as the ones in theaters, but it's big enough that it's past the point of diminishing returns, and I also avoid all the downsides of going to the theater, such as not being able to pause the movie, ending up in a bad seat, sticky floors, people talking or lighting up their phones, movie tickets that cost as much as I usually pay for a Blu-ray, and so on.

Movie theater popcorn used to be a draw for me too, but years ago I learned how to make it at home using the same ingredients and methods that they typically use, so that's no longer an incentive for me to go to the theater either.

reply

Ok, boomer.

I'm mid/late Generation X, Zoomer (you know, the generation that you didn't know existed because a meme hasn't informed you about it yet).

reply

Gen X here, and I feel about the same Maxim. Tarantino and a couple other films are the only reason I’ve been to the theater since 2000, except retro showings.

It would be nice for this COVID shit to be over though so people can get back to what they used to do, whatever that might be.

reply

No way you missed Infinity War and Endgame at the big screen. Watching on a phone doesn't do justice!

reply

I’m afraid I haven’t seen them at all. I would have to look them up to even know what they are about. It sounds like these are required viewing. Lol

reply

Stop pretending to not know Avengers movies. It's too fake.

reply

I’m very serious. People like me do exist.

reply

we oldies have dont watch anything on our phones, we have TV screens , big ones these days, for that.

Also i wouldnt watch that superhero shit if you paid me to, but it seems i'm in the minority there , even in the older age group.

reply

It’s funny. I’ll go to my parents house and my dad is always glued to the TV and it’s always some super hero movie or CGI action thing. He is in his 70’s and loves all the new movies and just can’t relate to it.

reply

I agree with you.

The people want movie theaters to be successful they need to start playing older great movies.

reply

To each their own Maxim
It's nice that you found what works for you
I usually prefer movies at home as well

reply

If you only have 54 , there is certainly a lot of old films left to draw on without having to resort to 21st C mediocrity!

reply

Exactly. There are thousands of them that I haven't seen, plus every couple of years I'm in the mood to rewatch my old favorites.

reply

Can you post your list of 54?

"A Christmas Carol(1984),?!?!

That's very cool! One of my favorite movies of all time!

reply

I saw it on TV the night it originally aired in 1984 when I was 9 years old, and I saw it each year after that when they re-aired it.

I just wish the Blu-ray was widescreen (1.85:1). When it originally aired on TV it was full frame (1.33:1) of course, but it was actually shot with widescreen framing in mind, because it got a theatrical release in the UK:

Aspect Ratio
1.33 : 1 (television ratio)
1.85 : 1 (theatrical ratio)

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0087056/technical?ref_=tttr_ql_dt_6

When I was looking to buy the Blu-ray a few years ago I researched to find out if a widescreen version existed. The region 2 Blu-ray release on the UK version of Amazon said that it was widescreen (16:9)...

Aspect Ratio : 16:9 - 1.78:1

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Christmas-Carol-Blu-ray-George-Scott/dp/B00433SLK6/ref=sr_1_1?crid=2BTXEWXJ246SX&dchild=1&keywords=a+christmas+carol+1984&qid=1599011305&s=dvd&sprefix=a+christmas+carol+1984%2Caps%2C251&sr=1-1

... but I found reviews saying that's wrong; it's really full frame, same as the US release.

Last Christmas my sisters came over to watch it and they loved it. Neither of them had seen it since we were kids, plus seeing it on a big projector screen in HD is a completely different experience than seeing it on a 25" TV from the 1970s with fuzzy reception. My younger sister, as a joking reference to what she used to do as a little kid, clapped when the movie was over and said, "Again! Again!"

Hey Queen....

just thinking back at the good old days, when box office was up and running and you spent all of 2019 horrifically failing at attempting to troll on every single Disney film that came out, where you made FAILED troll threads on every Disney film claiming they were disappointing and under performing.

Of course you eventually abandoned every single Films boards after all your predictions failed...

but it one finally DEATH BLOW that truly illustrates the depths of your failures...

deadline released Their Usual "Most Profitable Blockbuster Tournament lists"

and Disney had The Greatest Year in Hollywood History shattering every possible box office record and Literally had 8 of the 10 Most Profitable films of the years, The Irony of course is, You embarrassingly tried to troll on all 8 Disney films that made between 300 and 900 Million in profit

Never has ones failures been so Masterfully articulated in Numbers, lol

PS.

remember You guaranteed "Avengers Endgame wouldnt top Avatar" and claimed "This was Disney's one shot at topping Avatar, they'll never do it now"

Good times

lol

How bout your "You can Huff and Puff as much as you want, Captain Marvel Will never top Wonder Woman Domestically" fail!

I just want you to know, While your Failures have come to a temporary halt due to No Box office during the Pandemic.....I still relive your past failure when I'm feeling down and They ALWAYS bring a smile to my face

and I'm very much looking forward to continuing my Quest to Haunt your Life With All your Future Failures once Box office gets back to normal

If theres one thing I"M CERTAIN OF.....Its your hatred for Disney can not be controlled or contained.....Once Box office gets back to normal again and Disney Start Dominating Box office again like Disney has done for the last decade.....You will have no choice but to start trolling again.....Your hatred is too deep....

and I Will be there like always to ABUSE you....

I feel the same. I was born in 81 and I don't really care for much of anything made after the year 2000.

reply

I was born in '75, and although there are some 21st century movies that I like, they are few and far between.

reply

I can't wait for the old local small theaters to reopen.

reply

I would like to go. I'm being careful though because I have a medical condition.

How's your prediction going?
