Favorite game show hosts

Richard Dawson. This Englishman just KNEW American pop culture. He was funny and classy.

Grouch Marx, on You Bet Your Life. There is no contest on this. He was GROUCHO MARX on LIVE NETWORK TV! “Say the secret woid. It’s a common woid, something you see around your house every day.” “Shut up, [George] Fenneman [Groucho’s stooge and straightman].”

GROUCHO [to lady contestant] Do you have any children?

LADY CONTESTANT Yes, Groucho, I have 8 children.

GROUCHO Eight children?! Jesus, lady! I like my cigar, too, but I take it out of my mouth occasionally!

They took him off the air for a few weeks, then brought him back. I kid you not (and the seniors out there will get that reference), no other game show host can hold a candle to the lynchpin of the Marx Brothers, Groucho.

reply

No doubt the greatest unexpected game show host.

reply

"The secret word today is stash.
It's a common word used everyday around the house."

OK, that was not really said by Groucho on You Bet Your Life, however it was said on a 1970 comedy album A Pause In the Disaster by The Conception Corporation using an imitation of Groucho's voice.

reply

I don’t know how old you are, but I saw the show live, and I recall that Groucho said it. It was either Groucho or Fenneman, and they sounded very different.

As if it matters, of course.

reply

R_Kane, I'm 67, and I think that you may have misunderstood me.

When I said that Groucho didn't really say it, I was referring to "The secret word today is stash" line that I opened my post with, a line which was part of The Conception Corporation comedy album.

I was definitely not referring to the line that you had quoted. I have no doubt that Groucho said that he takes his cigar out of his mouth occasionally, for that is exactly something that he would have said. Like you, I used to watch You Bet Your Life a lot, especially when my grandparents were at the house.

Guy Smiley. He's the best.

reply

Isn't he a British spy?

reply

That's George Smiley. Guy Smiley is America's favorite game show host.

reply

My bad. Actually I've never heard a Brit utter "My Bad." I imagine it might be "My Bad, Darling" or "My Bad, Mate" but I've never heard it.

Lily Savage.

It's a shame that he retired Lily Savage.

OMG! Everytime someone mentions Les Dawson, I think of him playing the piano, which always made me cry with laughter.

While not specifically about Barker, he plays a prominent part (obviously) I really enjoyed this

reply

I caught it on Netflix recently. Very well done documentary.

reply

He was good in The Running Man (1987)

reply

Here’s a early 90’s UK rave tune that has Dawson’s Running Man samples in it. It’s funny how people sampled whatever they wanted back then.

Allen Ludden on the original Password, a simple word game, back when they actually played the game without all the extra chatter and joke setups. Still my favorite game show.
