It would be such a shame if one day we can't log on and get the usual screen message that says they are making some sort of changes and that we must try again in a few minutes....
only to never see MovieChat again.
I'd like to think that "Jim" might be as "classy" as IMDb, and at least give us some notice of a shut down.

I, too, have recently noticed that the actors are no longer identified next to the movie charcters. This lack of intel has driven me to IMDb, because now the LINKS to the actors are gone. Perhaps posters will start disappearing, too.

I use the IMDb link now too. I have used it for many things like filmography, an actor's biography, trivia... all of the things we still can't get here after over a year now.
I sure do hope that link isn't going to disappear!

Good grief! Is that honestly what they sent in the way of a reply?
I might as well register at FilmBoards, or whatever that site is.
I had hoped that this was a nice place where we didn't have to put up with a whole lot of trolling.
If this is all that the mods can come up with in response to someone's reasonable question, they are no better than the people who run the show over there!
In case anyone wants to know, I did find that funny. I do have a sense of humor. I just don't find it funny coming from someone who is suppose to be of help and see that we stick to the rules of this site.

It's almost correct.

Mod1 was the first and only mod for quite a while. Mod2 was brought in afterwards, because one moderator wasn't enough the more active the site became.

I was brought in shortly before Mod2 left. Mods 4 and 5 were brought in a month or so afterwards, after Mod1 departed. Mod6 was brought in a while after that.

Please understand that we're not always here, anymore than you or anyone else is.

How does all of this work anyway? You say you were brought in. I'm assuming that you have been posting here before deciding to pay it back. How did you get "brought in"? Is there some sort of recruiting deal?
I was just curious as to how it all works, or is this kind of a secret thing?
Once again, I do understand that you are not robots. You aren't here 24/7. I get that. I'm just sorry that you folks are as much in the dark as we are.

I joined MovieChat about two weeks after the site launched. Jim sent me a private message about six months later asking if I would be interested in being a moderator. I had been recommended by one or more of the original moderators, who thought I was a good citizen. I agreed to do it because I like the site and want to see it succeed. Jim and I then talked by phone for about 20 minutes and few days later I was "Mod 5."

No problem Margo...my writing can be a chore😉 and rest assured...the site is not dying...it's just being woefully neglected. But I will say that the mods being uncompensated changed my opinion of them drastically! I wish that the MODS would have felt more comfortable letting us in on the challenges the favor requires of them.
Maybe you have opened a line of communication we have ALL needed!👍 if so...we ALL owe you a debt of gratitude!👍

Most people are surprised...but I find it relatable. People want to feel important and included...they want to feel like they make a difference. They probably also assumed this would be an entry to better things as the site grew. I would imagine it is as hard if not harder for them to see thier leadership evaporate.

Hopefully more answers than I can provide will be forthcoming...but regardless...your thread is a step in the right direction...and I am grateful. I should mention hownos here as he brought this to our attention first and has persued it vigorously👍

Good. Glad to see that I wasn't the only one who wanted answers.
I seldom come here lately so I didn't know that anyone else was aware that only the characters in a movie were there, and that the actor's names have been eliminated.
This is MovieChat, and you would think that an outfit like this would keep those little tidbits and move forward with improvements.
I have no doubt that others have noticed these little things that are being taken away from us...... provided they actually look outside of this particular board.
No more said about that! I certainly don't want anyone thinking I am looking down my nose at the people who post here constantly. I was one of those people myself....

It's always nice to know that people here are interested in discussing movies and TV on the individual boards. People do tend to grumble about the boards not being busy enough. It does help the activity if one frequents those boards. Glad to hear that you are one of those people, even though you haven't actually posted all that much on this site.
I haven't really been to this particular board much in the past month so I have no idea of everything that has been posted here.
I posted this to the mods here because I figured that this would get their attention on this particular board. The downgrades are disturbing.
I thank you for the refresher coarse on courtesy. You are most kind.
I will certainly work on that air of condescension. I wouldn't want anyone to think that I consider myself somehow better than them.

As far as I know, none of us mods volunteered to do this for any reason other than to repay Jim for creating MovieChat and giving us a home after IMDB unceremoniously kicked us all out with little notice.

Originally Jim set no specific rules except for common sense, but soon some virulent former IMDB trolls found their way here, so Jim had to set some formal rules, and get in some human volunteer mods.

The reason we're anonymously mods 1-6 is because the trolls who soon enough attacked this site made it apparent they were gunning for all moderators here.

I hope this answers questions you and some others have or had.

Your reason is far more Nobel than any reason I would have!👍 therefor it is difficult to imagine anyone would do it for such high road reasons...but I've come to know YOU are often on a much higher road than myself...and it humbles me😔

You all seem to have done very well with actual troll trolls! I think anyone would admit that! Seldom do I see spam posts and I've only had two movies spoiled by trolls intent on doing nothing but spoiling...and the posts were gone in no time flat! Remember when you had to avoid imdb boards til after you saw the flick? I sure do...but not here...you guys do a fine job👍

It seems that we cause you guys the most grief. We bicker...argue...complain...and occasionally preform duets😉 I truly wish we could work things out without getting you folks involved👍 maybe conversations like this will help. You know for a fact that just knowing a mod is a real person...sometimes a good friend...can make a difference! Now I'm not saying that I've turned over a new leaf...but you must admit that I have made great efforts to not stir controversy lately. That is because I want to bring as little stress to y'all as I can. And I hope that you and your co volunteers are not dismayed by this whole Jim thing! This coming out...and y'all stepping up to talk...its all very good stuff! It puts us all in he same boat👍 and it shows that we ALL have similar concerns for a site we ALL L💗VE!

None of us mods know more than any other mod, or than you do. There's Jim, who owns the site, but who has been MIA for a while now, us mods, who volunteer our time, and that's it.

I do it as a way of paying Jim back for providing us with with this site, and I believe the other mods do it for the same reason. Paying it forward, if you will. Often enough it's not fun.

Which is why I agreed with MissMargo that there must have been another motivating influence. I was approached several times by the creator of a new site some years back to be a moderator although I kept insisting I didn't want the responsibility or the pressure, I was just there to have fun. That site no longer exists.

I didn't notice the now-missing character names, but it's not something I look at very often. I thought, or at least hoped, that we were in for some upgrades. I've gotten that message "we're updating, check back soon!" or whatever it says, about three times over the past week or so. On one occasion, it caused my comment to post twice. Hmm. 🤔 Puzzling. And a bit frustrating.

It is frustrating, especially when the "upgrades" are beginning to be downgrades.
I have also gotten a couple of those notices when trying to come on here to this site. This has happened many times over the past year, but I never see improvements or upgrades any longer. I have just noticed this past week that we no longer have a decent cast list.... just the characters. Thank goodness for the link to IMDb.....or will that dissapear next? Is this some glitch that may be fixed in the near future, or are other features going to be taken away?
I had hoped that the moderators might have some answers. Apparently they are here in the dark with the rest of us with no way to contact "Jim".
Only one mod has posted. I really am concerned. Is that the only one left?
I like this site. I'd hate to lose it.

Not to put any pressure on Mod5 or anything, but I am also surprised s/he hasn't chimed in, because he or she is usually the most vocal. Although I'm happy enough to see Mods 6, 4, and 3 have, and don't mean to imply otherwise. Maybe Mod5 is, as you suggest, on end of summer vacation?

Like MissMargo, and apparently many others, including yourself, I'm wondering what's going on. Jim was here for the first 6 or so months, making upgrades, communicating with all of us, but it's been a *long* time now since we've seen any additional features, or even the fixing of features that were supposed to be temporary fixes (the ignore feature, for one), or heard anything from him.

I'm not an alarmist, by any means, but I'm not comfortable with Jim's long silence, and apparently the mods here are left to their own devices, left in the dark as much as all of us are.

Jim???? Can you let us know what's going on? I assume it's been you making whatever changes have been made over the past few weeks. Why have the cast members and their links been removed? Why have the genres been removed? Is this temporary or not? Do you have any plans to make improvements, or at least fix the things that are broken??

As Mods 6 and 4 said, we don't know any more than you do. We don't know if the disappearance of the links to, or even the names of, the cast lists is permanent, or due to a glitch as a consequence of some other change Jim has recently made, and will soon return.

There are currently 4 mods here, but obviously we have lives, and we're volunteers, so we're not here 24/7. We do our best, but focus our attention on reports that are made when we don't have the time to look over and monitor most discussions. We can't be everywhere, all the time.

We too would love to hear more from Jim, as well as seeing upgrades on the site, not downgrades, which we hope are temporary.

I think three and the rest feel blind sided by all of this....which is fair👍 but being blind sided by one side while being kept in the dark by the other has to be stressful! Admitting to members that could be potential friends that you have been volunteering to be the order in the joint has to make one feel slippery...especially since no one believes we need no moderation. And coming out in itself shows a lot of bravery👍 it's good leadership in the absence of any.

So I don't think three was beleaguered by you or your question. I just think this situation is difficult for them all...and they are human...and they are showing it. But taking the time to thank them...like you have...is really swell!👍 and probably something we should all do...even me...even to...five😒👎

First of all, they did respond, so of course I thank them. They all took the time to reply to questions about this site.
Not quite sure of why they would feel blindsided. They are doing this because they like this site too. I'm sure that in addition to trying to keep law and order, they want to be helpful if any of us have questions. Too bad they have no information.
I don't see any reason for them to feel funny or slippery about trying to keep the law.
They have always been fair to me, even from the start when I called someone a name. I was given a warning. I deserved that. I'd broken a rule. One mod has also helped me with a sticky situation just a few months ago. For that, I'm grateful.
We do need moderation! Anyone who thinks we don't ought to leave.
They have always come out and have talked to us in the past. That means they are doing a good job.
Now if I startled anyone, I'm sorry. Didn't mean for this thread to blindside any of the mods. I have said this before, but I'll say it one more time. I came here to call them out because I assumed they would see it here and answer my questions. Things worked out... sort of. It seem none of us has any answers at this time.

Not quite sure about what has been brewing here. Don't care much lately. I'm not into site politics so I'm not up on who is Grand Pooba of General Discussion this week and I'm certainly not up on everyone's current agenda.
I wasn't looking for an argument from you or anyone. Just answers.

Since we are all friends here, let's be their friends and make their job less of a hassle.
If you have a problem about a video that was taken off this site, take it up with the moderators. This is the place to do this since we have their attention now.
By the way, I believe I said this at the time, but I'll say it again. I thought your video was interesting. I also said that I think you have talent. Your attitude is another story. If there is anything more insufferable than false modesty, it's conceit. Bragging and constant self promotion is something I find disgusting and tiresome. I'm being direct.
One more thing... I like to tell a person when I report them. My "feathers" weren't that "ruffled".
Could we just let this go now and be good children? I'm doing my best to play nice.
