Rotten tomatoes score of 19% Fresh, 81% Rotten

Do you agree?

reply

I swear by rotten tomatoes for most things except comedy. Comedy is far too subjective to criticize. I wasn't sure about this show after watching the first couple eps but it has grown on me. I like having it my weekly lineup now. Hope it lasts a while.

It really does look like they've gotten this one wrong

reply

Nope. It has a 92% audience score, which is far enough in the other direction for me to believe that those critics didn't give it a fair look. I'm guessing they don't really care for Seth McFarlane's shtick, and so they wrote it off after the first episode, which is a shame because I think it has gotten better and better after each new episode.

Almost every other review on the web has praised it as being more "Star Trek" than ST:D, and if they had to choose, they would rather watch The Orville. I agree with them. 19% is a joke, IMO.

The audience score shows that the critics are not in the mainstream.

This is often the case with both science fiction and comedy, so comedic science fiction could be way off.

But ... those great superhero films often get high scores even if the plot is the same as all of the others before it.

reply

Metacritic also pans Orville. Critics prefer their sci-fi PC.

IMDb: Orville 7.7; ST:D 7.3.

I enjoy the show but the writing is poor at times. If I had to think like a critic, then I would give it a low score but thankfully I can just enjoy the good stuff.

reply

I could not possibly care less what *anyone* thinks of a show or movie. I know what I enjoy and what I don't. I'm sure there are people that eat liver and onions and enjoy it, but if liver and onions got a 99.9% on Rotten Tomatoes, I still would think it's a vile thing to eat.

Yes. I gave up after Episode 3. I expected a lot more humor from the creator of Family Guy. It's just not funny enough to be comedy and not serious enough to be something like a Star Trek successor.

In any case, that is the RT critic score; the audience score is very favorable, so I'm in the minority. I think it will get renewed.

reply

Well they also thought that Into Darkness was better than Wrath of Kahn.

I´Il chase them round the moons of Nibia! :)

I never visit that tomatoes site, it's crap. Try IMDB for a more accurate rating reflecting the show's actual worth.
