Doctor Sleep proves that Kubrick had the real magic

All Doctor Sleep can do is suck on the dried husk of "The Shining," pulling out and/or copying some of the images and style Kubrick created, while the rest is just straight up hot-garbage.

There's a reason why directors used to be a big deal, and a reason why Kubrick averaged about a decade of development between film projects. He didn't just pull these things out of his ass (like Doctor Sleep does), he carefully crafted them, layered them like cakes, put meaning and thought into everything, and told stories through the visual art of film.

5 minutes of "The Shining" has more thought put into it than the entirety of "Doctor Sleep," and it shows, badly. But even worse for me, is that "Doctor Sleep" actually crosses the line and somewhat destroys / takes down "The Shining" with it by leaning so heavily on it and copying scenes and re-casting characters with pale imitations. The Jack Torrence scene is a blight on cinema. It's a little shameful, actually.

I don't like SK personally, he's a racist prick but he has talent.

Yes, the magic in The Shining was Kubrick's. IMO

reply

lol so true.

also see the SW sequels, and most of the long belated sequels directed by the 30s-40s year old fan boys who went to film school in the 90s made a couple indies then got the big sequel to whatever they grew up loving (altho some are fun to watch for nostalgia)

reply

Yeah I’m watching DS right now and I just saw an entire sequence of fan service as they are going back to the overlook, how pathetic. Blade Runner 2049 is the only recent “let’s revisit a decades old franchise” film that I’ve seen that’s actually good

reply

yeh BR2049 was a good experience at the cinema (not yet seen it again for fear i might not dig it anymore lol), also i really enjoyed Crystal Skull although no one else did lol.. but then again that was done by the originator of the series so doesn't really count like all the Jurassic Worlds, SW sequels etc written/directed by 40year old fanboys (they're not terrible its just you can tell they are directed by these nerdy fanboys who obsessed over them when they were kids)..actually thinking about it whenever the original guy comes back to do a long belated follow up they do try to mix it up create something abit different (Spielberg/Crystal Skull, Scott/Prometheus, Lucas/PT) but the fanboy directors just seem to remake the previous stuff in a way

i explored this abit on this thread:

I've seen Blade Runner 2049 multiple times and it's still just as good so I personally don't think you have much to worry about. I actually named Blade Runner 2049 my favorite film of 2017 and it was one of the rare occurrences that I didn't pick a Nolan film (I picked 2049 over Dunkirk) Eh I thought Crystal Skulls was OK but nothing great, far better movies came out that year such as The Dark Knight and Rambo. But oh those SW sequels were such blatant fanboy fiction and the fan service really got old very quickly, like the shot where we first see the Falcon, Jar Jar Abrams is a complete and total hack who can't direct a good movie to save his life. He was so overcompensating with his callbacks and fan service such as when he has the "new characters" get all excited when they see an "old character" like they are a freaking celebrity or something.

I liked this movie.

I think I'll watch it on Halloween.

reply

the last quarter or whatever where the Overlook is revisited is just nostalgia BS.

f*** that, i hear the book has it set at some Campground nearby.

reply

The campground was on the property of the Overlook, which burned down in the first book.

reply

I found the part at the Overlook the scariest portion of film.

reply

Definitely one of my favorite parts. I think there's a Shinning/Doctor Sleep double header this weekend on TV for Halloween, so I'll be giving it another watch.

reply

That's true. The Shining was an iconic movie. This one wasn't bad, but it isn't good either. It didn't grip me the way the Shining did. I didn't sense the menace that came with the Shining, nor did the movie invoke suspense and fear the way the Shining did. In a few years, I will probably forget I ever saw it.

reply

Ive pretty much done so already (were it not got recalling Elliot as bartender Jack Nicholson pouring drinks for Obi Wan... some serious Lucas/Spielberg/Kubrick connections there lol)

I THINK THE SHINING IS OVERRATED...MINUS NICHOLSON ITS A LONG BORING SLOG...DOCTOR SLEEP WAS A GOOD FLICK...I ENJOYED IT A LOT...ITS THE BEST SEQUEL THE SHINING COULD ASK FOR.

reply

Dude made a movie and told the story he wanted to tell. It's as faithful of an adaptation as The Bourne Identity. But everyone wants to suck Kubrick's dick and ignores this.

reply

I agree. I much prefer the book Shining. I have always found the movie a little boring. I can appreciate everything Kubrick did with it, and I think it's really well made, but it's not for me. Nicholson was Nicholson. The character really had no depth. That's what I liked about the book. I understand why people prefer the movie though.

I really liked Doctor Sleep. I thought it was a good balance for those of us who like the books, and those who preferred the movie. I don't care if it's pandering, they tried to make us all happy.

THE CONCLUSION AT THE OVERLOOK WAS A WONDERFUL WRAP UP,CALLBACK AND UNIFIED FINALE.

Yea i also thought he should have not shown jacks face maybe just the arm, and imply its him. I didnt mind it too much but havent gone back to re watch it like i have done every year with the shinning since 2001
On the plus side i think this guy also did black phone which i think is a 9/10.
