$170 million opening weekend, according to Variety

$30-$40 million less than what Disney expected, and $20 million less than Box Office Mojo’s prediction. On track to make $850 million to $1.1 billion.

reply

Were your theaters packed?

reply

My theaters sold well with several sold out auditoriums, I’ll admit. People are still coming to see it. However, numbers are certainly lower than everyone expected. Frozen 2’s opening weekend was an absolute mammoth in comparison to this one. Every day I’ve come in, I take a look around and go “It’s busy, but not THAT busy.”

reply

Are you able to say how many theaters are at your complex or how many screens it was on, or would that out you?

reply

I hope the movie makes 1 billion.

reply

800-900 million max and I'm being generous here.

reply

Disney (and Kathleen Kennedy) could use their own money to push box office number over $1 billion.

reply

Hopefully it collapses in the second weekend. Unfortunately, Cats is worse, and I was hoping the latter would be stiff competition for TROS. But they're BOTH bad, awful movies.

reply

I hope it grosses over a billion so I can watch you and the haters suck on it.

reply

So you like to watch, eh?

. . . creepy.

reply

Of course.

reply

Don't worry you'll still be poor and Disney rich as fu*k.
Also you can still pretend they give a fu*k about you.
Imagine that, corporations caring about people and not their money.
You got to be low iq to shill for corporations regardless of their name.

reply

Nice assumption lol. I will sleep happy knowing you stupid fans are in utter despair over Disney making these films. Star wars is trash and i am glad it's being destroyed for you fans. It was overrated to begin with.

reply

I'm not that invested either about it. I love the ot but they 2can put it to sleep or take it to the grave for all I care. I just don't like Disney shills or low iq trolls like you.
I don't make any money off it so why should I care what happens to it.
Ohh, and I am replying to you out of boredom, because I still have 9 hours of spare time at work.

Life goes on troll, regardless of how bad or good the movie is, how you rate it or how much money it makes.

reply

How am a Disney shill? Oh yeah it is because I do not rate the Disney Star Wars films the same as you. I hate all the live action Disney remakes except for Jungle Book. I have no brand bias at all. I like a movie for what it is not what brand is behind it. Life does go on and I am perfectly content with it. I like how you assumed I was poor.

reply

Then why are you so invested in something that doesn't affect you?

"I hope it grosses over a billion so I can watch you and the haters suck on it."

The only way you feel the need to make that statement is because as a human being you are outright a bad person.
I guess you like to revel in the misery of other people.

reply

Because I'm tired of the whining by these stupid fans. Seriously they need to grow up. I was disappointed by Spiderman 3. You never saw me complain and drone on and on about it. It wasn't what I expected, it's life I moved on.

I do revel in star wars fans misery. They are such a toxic fan base. I've been harassed and called such rude things for simply saying I liked the Disney star wars series.

reply

I somehow understand what you are saying, but going against the grain always results in those things happening regardless of fan bases.
The heat of the moment.

reply

I.dont care if people like my opinion. I got tired of being personally attacked for having a different view. I myself think these Disney films are way better than the prequels and the majority agrees. It's why seeing these fans childhood get destroyed is amazing seriously screw star wars.

reply

You are majorly invested and pissed off ....lmao..

reply

Yeah, because I have 5% worth of shares in Disney and the stock is going down.

reply

You are mentally and emotionally invested. Your whole life....that's why you are pissed...😃

reply

Don't forget my Disney shares.
I'm practically losing millions.

So you need to post like a bot to achieve your quota of comments.
I saw the first time, bro :).

reply

No you don't have shares. It's too expensive. It will be ok though. You will find a new franchise to love and cherish until franchise fatigue and than maybe one more and than you die ..😄

reply

But I want this franchise.
Spoiler : we all die, bummer, huh.

reply

Yes sadly we All die and we don't come back as force ghosts. ☹️

Grossing over $1 billion is no longer considered that impressive for blockbusters like this anymore--especially something with the Star Wars brand.

reply

As long as this is profitable and the Star Wars fans do not get their wish I am happy. I am happy Disney owns it and it will never come back.

reply

You sound very young. I'd be shocked if you were out of your teens. I'd hope you weren't any older than that, given what you're telling us here.

reply

I think Star Wars is a gigantic overrated joke. I am tired of it I want it to end for good.

reply

So? It still doesn't change the fact that your mindset regarding this sounds childish. Running around going: "Yeah, I hope it makes a lot of money so I can watch you fannerds cry! LULZ!". Who talks like that? Ridiculous.

reply

That makes no sense. If you want it to end then you don't want it to make money.

reply

Just watch Jumanji instead, that's what I did "The Last Time" :D
That movie deserves more recognition.

reply

I already saw it, it was fun, but I had difficulty keeping track of which avatar was which character, especially since they changed.

reply

Jack Black as a teenage girl is frigging hilarious. Also, playing black guy w/o turning to cliches or typical stereotypes and STILL keeping it funny.

reply

"Just watch Jumanji instead."

Thanks, but no.

reply

Nope, Disney predicted $160m, BOMojo $210m, Deadline $190m.

reply

What? Here’s BO Mojo saying 190 million: https://www.boxofficemojo.com/article/ed3463447556/?ref_=bo_hm_as

Here’s Deadline predicting 200 million:

Does it hurt pulling numbers out of your ass? Do you use lube? Oh wait, you’re also the guy who posts a fuckton of looney extremist conservative nonsense of Greta’s page, so are you trolling or horrible at citing facts?

reply

This won't fall to 170 million. In fact, it's going to inch up a bit in the actuals. It looks like it dropped 17% on Sunday instead of 20% so the OW actuals released tomorrow will bump up to about 177 million.

reply

175.5 OW it seems.
Oh yeah, baby, try and project 1 billion with this pathetic OW.
Expect it to drop over 60% like the ball that JJ and KK keep dropping LOL.

reply

Question is about repeat business. Lack of repeat business will effect the final box office figures. I have no interest in paying to see it again or buying the DVD.

reply

We're certainly in an odd period of film when a $170 million opening can be seen as disappointing.

reply

We live in an era where nearly every superhero movie grosses $1 billion like it's nothing. Star Wars was once the king of the brand and every one of these films should have made $2 billion minimum in their sleep.

It's not longer that impressive for box office thrillers to gross $1 billion anymore. It really just depends on what it is.

reply

People will bark about how this is a success.

Yes, this is a success.

HOWEVER...

In this current climate, making $1 billion isn't exactly that impressive anymore. So many movies have done that now. When you have movies like Joker and Aquaman pushing that, it's really not saying much that Star Wars making those types of numbers.

Star Wars should be making $2 billion in its sleep easily.

For Star Wars, this is abysmal. Apologists will defend this and say otherwise, of course, but the fact they're even here at all, making excuses for it, says all that needs to be said. Great films with a great box office don't require a team of posters to "interpret" the box office data 24/7 and "explain" to us how the numbers are better than they seem.
