All the years I’ve been reading NYPost, I’ve found their movie reviews to be quite reliable

reply

Its not a perfect movie but anyone who pans it, has alterior motives.

reply

They are uncannily accurate. Imma skip watching this one altogether.

reply

Interesting that he calls the film ‘bland and forgettable’ yet praises Todd Phillips’ Joker at the end as that film for me was bland and forgettable apart from the last 20 minutes.

reply

Joker was really good, man!

reply

I think it was an average film, but it happened at the right time, when there was a lot of public anger on wall street. That movie became some kind of release channel.

But if you are not watching at the right time, it is just a boring film.

reply

I'm not even an American, I don't care about Wall Street. I genuinely thought it was just a really good movie. At least in the superhero genre, it's the best-in-class.

reply

But that is just it. It is not a superhero movie. There was nothing super or hero in it, I say it again neither was in it.

Many think it has nothing to do with the Joker, just hitching a ride on superhero genre with the title. It is a trick to get people to watch it.

Also, being outside of America does not mean you don't have a disdain for bankers.

reply

Batman also doesn't have any super powers, still a superhero.

reply

But there is still the hero part. And he has a superpower, his wealth that is.

reply

Well, Joker obviously is not a hero. He's a supervillain. But there is no supervillain movie genre, so as a genre it's a superhero genre eventhough he's not a hero. It's just the name of the genre.

Wealth is not a superpower. Many real life people have wealth. It's a normal power. It's like saying ability to lift 1000lb. is a superpower. Athletes can do that. It's a normal power.

reply

Joker, IS a superhero movie, but I would not describe it as that to someone who has no knowledge of The Batman story. I would most likely tell them it was a drama.

reply

I didn't care for it, sorry. The cinematography and Phoenix's performance were great but it really felt like a blatant rip-off of Scorsese's King of Comedy. I haven't watched it since seeing it in the cinema, I was really let down by it, even as a character study film and not as a conventional comic book film, the script really lets it down. General moviegoers seem to adore it though based on it's IMDB score and the audience scores on Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic but I just didn't see what all the fuss was about.

reply

Why sorry? You sounded so pretentious. Obviously you don't want to discuss but just shooting down people. Sorry my ass. Next time, have manner.

reply

The guy gave you a perfectly detailed response to describe how he feels about the movie.

All you added to the conversation was

Joker was really good, man!

He clearly seemed more interested in discussion than you, and right now he's definitely more polite.

reply

I don't care for your sock, sorry.

reply

Well that escalated quickly.

I didn’t mean to sound pretentious, I could tell you were clearly a fan of the film and I was just giving my opinion on it. Sorry if you felt I was ‘shooting you down’ because that was definitely not my intention, more power to you if you like Joker.

reply

Each person has own taste.

To some people Marvel films are the greatest thing to others terrible.

Another example is some people like Alien 3 others hate it but those same people that hate it may like the assembly cut.

When it comes to the likes of Batman a lot of people wont accept the character being changed he is not a hero and has no superpowers also the trailer alone for this movie already shows multi things Batman would not do.

reply

OK, now we get something real. The IMDB score these days can be bought, sometimes quite obviously. This site is also crawling with movie promoters, some I know some I don't.

But negative reviews are more believable I think, nobody pays them to do it at least.

reply

I don't think negative reviews are necessarily bought, but I do think they can be done for other reasons. Negativity clickbait is more effective in generating responses, which is why these articles and youtube videos and moviechat posts just peddle exaggerative criticism at times.

reply

Calling it bland and boring is hardly excessive or click bait. And it gives good reasons, unlike other superhero movies focusing on hero's powers, this one according to the review is more of a detective movie, with some scenes closer to saw.

That gives people a pretty good idea on what the movie is about. Some reviewers are already calling it "CSI: Gotham". And if that is the movie, it can be quite boring, especially 2 and half hours long.

reply

I didn't read this review (I honestly don't even read reviews normally, let alone right now because I'm avoiding spoilers). Just remarking on a potential reason for why negative reviews aren't necessarily believable just because they're negative, cause you brought it up. I wasn't analyzing the legitimacy of this particular article.

reply

john podhoretz, the editor of commentary & one of my favourite writers, said it was incredibly dull on the commentary podcast today. i'm not sure if he's publishing a review (he sometimes does reviews for the washington free beacon), but if he says it's dull, i'm willing to believe him.

but one of my other favoured reviewers, sonny bunch of the bulwark was a little kinder in his review, though still a bit tepid.

https://www.thebulwark.com/the-batman-review/

none of this is making me want to sit through three hours of dreariness, watching a guy dressed like a bat.

also apparently catwoman lectures batman about white privilege, which makes me want to vomit in disgust.

reply

I believe Catwoman's comment on privilege is only a single line according to another poster here. But indeed, it's still three hours + your reviewer comments so your hesitation makes sense.

reply

Well, I haven't watched the film, and probably will wait for it to be on streaming from the reviews I have seen.

Also I will start by saying white privilege is real, but bring it up in every show is kind of cringey, at least for people who are not black.

Anyway, my point is that in term of this movie, probably not appropriate for catwoman to bring it up because she is a thief. By that I mean being black & under privileged is no excuse for stealing, also the casting again reinforces the negative stereotype of black people being criminals.

So that I think is a case of being political correct inappropriately and doesn't help either the movie or the message it tried to push.

reply

So I just watched it. And though I won't bother trying to convince you to see the film or not, I will say that, in context, the line actually makes sense in my opinion. What's more offensive/inappropriate to me is that she uses the word "white" before it lol. The word privileged makes sense in their exchange but the "white" part cringed me out. (And whenever you watch it, I think you'll see what I mean.)

That said, it's not as bad as some other things I've seen. The Luke Cage v Iron Fist convo in Defenders always comes to mind.

reply

If you liked David Fincher's serial killer films like Se7en and Zodiac then The Batman takes a lot of inspiration from them. It's also a pretty good action film, albeit a 3 hour one.

The white privilege line is bad and unnecessary though, it's something like Catwoman says to Batman "All anyone cares about in this city are these white privileged assholes like The Mayor, the Commissioner, The DA and Bruce Wayne. As far as I'm concerned that psycho (referring to The Riddler) is right to go after these creeps, I thought you would be on his side?"

They couldn't have just had "privileged assholes" in the script, don't know why they had to mention their skin colour.

reply

i've heard that fincher comparison made a few times - i like those movies, but neither of them are massive favourites personally, so that still leaves me a bit on the fence.

for all the kvetching i've done about the 3hr running time, i probably am going to catch it in the theatre at some point, perhaps during a matinee showing in the next week or two.

i'll be going with low expectations and a dark cloud over my head knowing i'm heading into 3 droning hours of this stuff, but i'm open enough to imagine i might somehow manage to have a good time with it. seems unlikely, but who knows?

reply

I think if you're really into that visual style of those neo-noir films like Se7en as well it'll help. There's some stunning cinematography to be found in The Batman and whilst it is long it's definitely not slow, I found it thrilling throughout but it all depends on how much you're gripped by the story.

reply

I wish I had read those reviews before seeing the movie. It was the most bored I have ever been in a cinema in my life. I seriously wanted to walk out after 2 and half hours because I was fighting to stay awake. Never felt so cheated by a movie in my life.

reply

i just walked in the door from catching it.

i didn't like it much.

for a movie that's 3 hours long, it sure seemed like there were quite a few things that were not very well explained, or at least that's how it seemed to me.

and i did find it a bit dull overall.

it looked great though. can't deny that they really put a lot of effort into getting some smashing looking images in there. that car chase in particular was really well done i thought.

3/5, a passing grade for looking good.

reply

Being a Batman fan, I'm going to go see it. But I never had the expectation that it would he as good as Nolan's trilogy. I'm just going to go enjoy another Bat film.

reply

I can't believe some people would decide not to go and see a movie based on the word of one person,be it a critic, friend etc.

Surely you would get a wider variety of opinions, not just one?

reply

Love Batman, and the Riddler is my favorite Batman villain…and I found this movie overly long, kinda boring, and mostly pointless.

It doesn’t totally suck, but I found it underwhelming with as much awesome official Batman material that is out there.

There really isn’t anything I can honestly praise about this movie outside of the casting. Even the score had me constantly thinking about the Empire theme from Star Wars, and the Nirvana song didn’t resonate with this universe.

TBH, the more I think about this movie, the less I like it.

reply

Finally, someone else heard the Star Wars music too. I was expecting Darth Vader to walk in at some point.

reply

I give that review 10/10. I was starting to question my own sanity with all of the youtube shills heaping praise on this movie.
