The manager of our local movie theater couldn't have been happier today with full theater after full theater for two new films while Mission Impossible was still in another theater.

Things have definitely been pretty lively at the cinema lately. My theater of Oppenheimer was nearly sold out and, for the first time in a long time, there were a lot of people in the lobby when I went into get my ticket. Typically when I go to to movies now, I walk in and it's me and maybe two or three other people in there--if that--but when I went to see Oppenheimer it was packed.

Right before that you had Mission: Impossible, and right before that you had Indiana Jones, and scattered in among those is the sleeper hit Sound of Freedom. I am indeed sure that exhibitors are happy.

I suppose it makes sense, since women probably don't care about the atomic bomb's origin story.

Kids and kids are a big audience. Many camps went to see it...many parents have to buy tickets to attend with their kids.

A comparison of the movies is not even close.

Barbie?? Really...

'Kids and kids are a big audience. Many camps went to see it...many parents have to buy tickets to attend with their kids.'

Exactly. I was thinking this even before they opened. No way was Oppenheimer going to beat Barbie.

Aren't both films far exceeding box office expectations?

reply

Isn't it unfair to compare differently rated movies? Don't R-rated ones always gross less than PG-13?

reply

Yes it is. Kids bring friends and families with them to cinema. Also running time is working against Oppenheimer.

reply

oppenheimer is still doing really well for what it is. it will probably end up one of the year's biggest films.

reply

You expected something different?

A movie about an iconic doll that has been around since the 50’s that every girl alive has owned at some point…vs. a 3 hour movie about the inventor of the atom bomb.

Of course Barbie is going to make more money than Oppenheimer.

Regardless, Oppenheimer is doing very well at the box office, especially for the type of film it is and the subject matter, as well as being R-rated, and to be honest, it is a million times better of a film than Barbie will ever dream of being, and I don’t need to go see Barbie to know that.

Comparisons like this are absolutely moronic.

"Comparisons like this are absolutely moronic".

But they call these movies Barbenheimer!

reply

Yeah, that’s dumb too.
