The theaters are packed for Barbie

I went to see Mission Impossible earlier and Barbie is being showed in 3 theaters at the same cinema. All shows for Barbie were sold out today and most of tomorrow. The photo in the link below shows a packed lobby with the line going out the door. It's insane!

I went to see Indiana Jones last night , only to find out it had been cancelled to make way for an extra screen for Barbie. Apparently Indiana Jones had no bookings so they were able to do it (I hadn't booked, just turned up for the evening showing). I ended up having to see Mission Impossible instead(was about little over half full) .i will try see IJ next week (hopefully same wont happen again!)

Both Indy and MI7 got hammered, if the trend continues even MI7 could end up losing a lot of money.

reply

I'm abit shocked at MI7s box office, it will no doubt hit 300m thus weekend but it def not looking like it going to get up to the box office of the previous 3 MIs (700m+) ..in fact it be lucky if it gets to MI2s 550m or even MI3's 400m at this rate. Indiana Jones is a shock bomb as was The Flash (dint even make it to 300m).

This year it almost feels like the 'old' franchises that did previously the billions and were expected to again are giving way to fun/childish 'Idoicracy' type stuff like Barbie, Super Mario. that the masses want to see with their kids..

reply

But Barbie and Super Mario are also kind of old franchises, it just haven't been revived before, at least not for quite a while.

Maybe people just want something different, take a break from comic book CGI actions.

reply

That can’t be right though because Guardians of the Galaxy 3 and Spider-Verse 2 did well recently.

Mission: Impossible flopping is a bizarre one considering how much Fallout made 5 years ago and how much Top Gun made last summer.

Suppose it just goes to show how fickle modern audiences are and they’ll just flock to see Barbie/Oppenheimer to be a part of the Barbenheimer trend.

reply

YEAH...IT IS ALL DUE TO BARBENHEIMER.🤣

reply

Guardians of the Galaxy 3 did OK, but not exceptional, Spider-Verse 2 is an animation, so maybe there is a bit difference.

Top Gun used real aircraft so I guess that counts as not CGI, also first top gun movie was decades ago.

MI7 performed as well as previous movies in the franchise, at least before Barbenheimer kicked in. It is an franchise with new movie every few years, you know what to expect, the formula, you probably know what it is about without even watching it. Even 007 changes actors every now and then, they can't really bring anything new to MI franchise.

It will probably lose money because COVID increased its cost, and Barbenheimer is killing all competition, but I wouldn't say it failed, it did as well as it could.

reply

Yeah, plus Top Gun has fighter jets in which you don’t really see much of in any other blockbuster. It had the audience who were looking for nostalgia whilst also an audience looking for a great action summer blockbuster.

It is a shame about Mission: Impossible 7 because it is very good and deserves to make as much money as the previous 3 films.

Last summer Top Gun, Jurassic World and Minions all dominated at the box office so it’s a shame if Barbie and Oppenheimer do the business but Mission: Impossible underperforms.

reply

Those past three MI films that hit ~$700m only did around $200m domestic, and Dead Reckoning isn't that far off from how those trended if you check the daily takes.

Barbie and Oppenheimer no doubt will put a damper on that, but it remains to be seen how much it will be impacted internationally.

Its crazy to go to a theater nowadays with Covid still lurking around

reply

I guess life outside of the house should just end as long as "covid is still lurking around", right?

reply

What if the other movie patrons are not vaccinated?

reply

COVID will become less and less an issue, for each mutation the virus will gradually get weaker, because dead or immobilised people can't transmit, the dominant variant is usually less harmful. I think by now it is about as harmful as flu.

I can't say about other countries, but right now in Australia the No.1 issue is a new flu virus getting a lot of people sick, when you hear something like that, it means COVID is no longer that big a deal.

reply

COVID will become less and less an issue, for each mutation the virus will gradually get weaker...

Remember the first news reports of COVID - People dropping over dead in the streets in China, that cruise ship which nearly half the people on board had died, the villages in Italy where hundreds of old people were just being found dead?

Weirdly it didn't seem any of that strain seemed to last too long or probably even reach most countries, yet we behaved as if it had. Odd times...

reply

Thanks for clarifying

reply

I know. People are taking their lives in their hands. It's so irresponsible, and death is waiting.

reply

Exactly. The way Trump allowed this virus to come into our country, things will never be the same again

reply

Yes, we must remember that this is all Trump's fault. If only he had built that wall, the virus never would have been able to get in.

reply

Thats a good point

Barbie is one of the most popular female toys of all time so it's easy to see why women of multiple generations might want to see this movie. The movie is loaded with political messages so it will be interesting to see if it continues to attract viewers.

The number of stars in this movie is also pretty impressive. Some of the bigger names include Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Kate McKinnon, John Cena, pop star Dua Lipa, Rhea Perlman, Will Ferrell and Michael Cera.

I'm a straight male so I would only hate-watch this movie.

I AM ALSO A STRAIGHT MALE...I GENUINELY WANT TO SEE THE MOVIE.

reply

Cool. I do not condemn anyone who wants to see the movie. Why do you want to see it?

The movie appears to have an anti-male message so you may not want to watch this. Instead of making a fun movie about toys, this movie delivers many divisive political messages.

IT LOOKS GOOD...BARBIE IS A MAJOR TOY BRAND...I DON'T GIVE A DAMN ABOUT MESSAGES IN FILMS...FILM IS AN ARTFORM AND ART IS SUPPOSED TO HAVE A MESSAGE...ANTI-MALE MESSAGING ONLY BOTHERS MEN WHO DEEP DOWN KNOW THEY NEED TO BE BETTER.

reply

Look at those future activists and hater of patriarchy once they've come out of the theater.
