What year is this supposed to take place?

I'm watching so far and I'm not getting a sense of when this is supposed to take place... Is this "present day" or set in the past a ways?

Did you like it? I hear it's great.

I don't know if I'd call it great, but it def had vibes of the old 80s boarding school movies, like Dead Poets Society, School Ties, Taps (without the whole "taking over the school part :-p ), etc...
And for a movie like this to so subtly pay homage to those great films, and still stand on its own with a unique story to tell... They did pretty good.
My only gripe was that the movie didn't delve into some of the other boys' lives. There were bits and pieces, but not enough to really give you the sense that you KNOW the characters beyond being "appearances" in the movie. And it was a shame, because a couple of them were pretty interesting. I mean, I guess that happens in all movies with large casts... I just felt like it could have done a skosh better at keeping the balance here. *shrugs*

Sounds good enough to me. I'll watch.

A good point about the evaporation of the stories about the other boys. 40 minutes in and they literally climb aboard a helicopter and disappear for the last 2/3 of the movie.

I feel like maybe the writer didn't know what to DO with the rest of the cast... Or more likely they didn't have the funds to keep the actors on set for more of the movie. With kids on set, you gotta make time for schoolwork, keep within child labor laws, deal with parents' demands, etc. It's all very costly and constraining on the project, I'm sure. So they were given an intro, the actual movie happened, and they showed up just in time for the conclusion... That means they only had to be on set for a limited amount of time, which costs filmmakers less, and cuts production time down too. You know what I mean?

The trailer has a fake copyright year of MCMLXXI = 1971, I really liked the detail, beside the old style trailer.

Hmmm... well, there IS a "IN COLOR" phrase!

Christmas 1970 with a perfect 1970 soundtrack!

One of the best years of the 20th century.

You should be able to tell from the long hair all the guys have that it's late 60s or early 70s.

reply

The War in Vietnam was mentioned as on going and claimed the life of the son of one of the characters.

Ah... I guess I missed that detail. Thanks. :-)
