Did we REALLY need this?

After the incredible documentary “The Rescue” (96% on Rotten Tomatoes, 8.6 on IMDB) that featured the *actual* rescuers, what’s the actual point of a fictionalized version with Hollywood actors? What new could possibly be said or shown about the event? Is it really about the Benjamins? Is Ron Howard THAT desperate for money? Really? And I heard there’s an impending Netflix series about it too???? Way to take a near-tragedy (in which at least one rescuer DID die), and hump its corpse until it dries up and blows away. SMDH.

So I guess this begs the question .... Did we really need;

Everest?
United 93?
Munich?
Titanic?
Hotel Rwanda?
Schindler's list?

And literally thousands of other great movies based on tragedies?

reply

All within the same year as the original, VERY comprehensive and well-done documentary and about a relatively limited event in terms of scope?

reply

I don't see anything wrong with having a Documentary and Movie about it. I watch both and thought both were great. The movie follow the real events pretty well.

reply

Agreed. And, we really don’t know the answer to OP’s question until we see the movie. May turn out to provide a great story in a way that was missed or neglected by everything that came before

I haven't seen the documentary - just saw this film - it was not half bad.
For those who have seen the documentary though, I imagine skip is a good option - since you know the whole story.

reply

I guess you dong need to see it. But the doc is good too. I think the film and the doc complement each other.

reply

I will say this though - this film makes it seem like the whole cave except for the last section where the kids stayed is under water - which is why they sent 1 diver with one kid.
In reality... 3 divers accompanied each kid - and if you look at the actual cave, very few sections of it were properly submerged - most of the journey was by foot. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bCmgZ8nMyKo

Essentially..... this film is painting a picture that's far from being accurate.

reply

They mention in the movie that they have to take a longer part by foot...

This film DOES show the rescue of each kid as a relay with three divers, and it DOES show the sections that were not underwater, which is where the divers accomplished the handoffs of each kid.

Because watching people walk in the mud is super suspenseful. Even the Documentary didn't show a whole lot of footage of that either.

"..Is Ron Howard THAT desperate for money?"

I guess since Solo didn't pan out that well...work is work.

reply

The movie was decent, well done even, but the documentary "The Rescue" is definitely superior.

reply

Not everyone is willing to watch a documentary, so if it’s close to accurate then yes, a film can expose more people to this historical event.

I have no issues with Ron Howard, generally seems to be a decent human. Except for that god awful Hillbilly Elegy. He has to have regrets about that disaster…
