In medieval England only brown men and white women existed (oh and dwarves)

Lesbian white women. This is historical fact. You fucking racists.

It's so funny to see unlikable white men complaining that people don't like white men!

The penny just won't drop.

🤣

You mean that the creators of this series erased all white men because they didn't like me personally?

reply

Nobody likes you personally! Why should they.

reply

Why do you feel the need to insult strangers on the internet because they have a different opinion to you on a movie?

I guess I am just secure enough with myself to not equate my value in the world to representation in film.

reply

Really, supporting a misandrist (and racist) remark is feeling secure with yourself?

You know, for people who claim to not care about these issues, you do spend a lot of time talking about them and even mocking those who share a different view. It's pretty clear you guys are actually quite bothered by it.🤷‍♀️

reply

I'm not bothered by the casting. I'm bothered by every post on a movie with different casting being inundated with posts complaining that someone other than a white male having the lead in a movie, or a tv show.

I am not mocking those who think differently. I wouldn't mock you even though we disagree. I think that when we disagree it is at least with a mutual respect. I would like to hope so anyways. As far as I know, you have never insulted me during a disagreement, and I'm pretty sure I have never called you any names or insulted you.

The OP in this case came out with an inflammatory post. The OP has a history of insulting those who disagree with them. I don't consider Otter's response an insult, to the OP. I do not consider it misandrist or racist. I saw it as pointing out hypocrisy. The OP was the one calling people "fucking racists".

reply

And I'm pointing out the hypocrisy of Otter, who has a history of resorting to bigoted insults when they disagree with a person on certain issues. They're just as much an inflammatory troll as the OP.

"I'm bothered by every post on a movie with different casting being inundated with posts complaining that someone other than a white male having the lead in a movie, or a tv show."

But you're not bothered by the boards being inundated with posts complaining about those who do have an issue with the "woke casting"? I think there are more threads on the TLM board complaining about the "racists" than about her skin colour. It's actually a legitimate issue since Disney, like many others, is very open about it, so it's completely unnecessary to mock and gang up on these people unless they're very clearly being racist.

I'm not bothered by either opinion, but it's really problematic when people can't openly discuss these issues and are constantly called racists, sexists, etc.

reply

I would say that the posts complaining about those posts complaining about skin colour are much fewer than the ones complaining about the colour of skin. So I don't really consider them.

I have not encountered Otter calling people names. I don't think that

It's so funny to see unlikable white men complaining that people don't like white men!
is calling anyone names. I don't think that it's racist either because it doesn't refer to every white man.

I think Disney as a company made choices. They are open about wanting at least 50% of their characters not being white, straight, cis gendered characters. I don't see it as an issue as there are other studios who are still producing mostly white, straight, cis content. If Disney loses a lot of money from what they are putting out, then that shows that people don't want the content they are producing. If they are making money, then I guess people do want to see other faces.

reply

"I would say that the posts complaining about those posts complaining about skin colour are much fewer than the ones complaining about the colour of skin"

I would say they're not. There always seems to be a thread complaining about "racists" before any other thread is posted.

Well, techinically, there was nothing racist about OP's post. Otter constantly calls people white racists just for having a view he doesn't agree with. He just assumes they are white males who don't want to see black people and has called them assholes more than once. Responding to the OP with a bigoted remark is hypocritical.

"I don't see it as an issue as there are other studios who are still producing mostly white, straight, cis content."

The issue is inserting minority characters (and changing white characters) for political reasons, the issue for most people is not that casts aren't all-white.

Investors are not the same as the audience. Some people might want to see a black princess, but who asked for a black Ariel?

reply

I haven't noticed Otter calling anyone racist. I'm not disagreeing with you, I just haven't paid attention. In this instance, the OP made a sarcastic post, and was called out for it. I appreciated the calling out, because I didn't think it was nasty like so many other responses to these types of posts can be.

The arts have always been political, and they've mostly been skewed liberal, because most artists are left leaning. Sure not all, and that's great because I think everything needs balance. Is the balance slightly off right now? I say it is, but I'm not an expert. I think that the arts may be over compensating for the balance being off in other parts of society. It will correct itself sooner or later and then the scales will tip the other way.

There are so many other hills I'd rather die on than what skin colour a performer has, or what genitals.

I don't know who asked for a black Ariel, but as a fan of the illustrated book that I had as a kid of the little mermaid and being blond myself, I didn't ask for a redheaded Ariel, but I also didn't really care. I cared more that she didn't die, as I was a morbid child.

This is the kind of rhetoric people often have to deal with:

"https://moviechat.org/general/General-Discussion/6320bba40596e9102d6997a8/FAN-BAITING-Playbook-REVEALED?reply=63218354dd0f531c1ac0642d";

I've also been accused of being a white male who only wants to see their own kind glorified. They've also verbally abused those who didn't share their views on COVID. Posters like Otter (and perhaps the OP) don't help to create a civilized discussion about these things and I think it's absolutely fair for there to be a discussion about this.

I'm not sure if every sarcastic post needs to be called out, does this post need a calling out?:

"There are so many other hills I'd rather die on than what skin colour a performer has, or what genitals."

Like I said, I get that it doesn't matter to you, but a lot of people have pointed out it's part of a bigger problem, like the balance being way, way off right now and not just in the arts.

reply

I don't even trust that most posters on this site who are outraged on either side are even real people. I think bots stirring division are part of the bigger problem. I think that the denial that white Christian nationalists are actually a serious threat, and again foreign governments exploiting that are a larger part of the problem. No one is erasing white people, and yet that seems to be the belief.

As to whether or not every sarcastic post needs to be called out...probably not. Maybe it's just time to walk away from this place as it really is turning into a cesspool. I was honestly just trying to really understand why people are so upset, but this isn't worth my energy.

"I think that the denial that white Christian nationalists are actually a serious threat, and again foreign governments exploiting that are a larger part of the problem. No one is erasing white people, and yet that seems to be the belief."

I'm not surprised people believe this because it's actually the language used by some. If not white people, then certainly white culture. It even happens over here, a place where there's no threat from "white Christian nationalists." That really sounds like a boogeyman created by the far left.

reply

Okay. I like you too much to continue this conversation. If you really believe that white people and white culture are being erased then I will say thank you for the discussion, but I am done here. Cheers.

That's not quite what I said, but oh well.

What's a 'likeable' white man? One who does what the establishment tells him to do? One who doesn't question the mountain ranges of bullshit he's been told not to question?

Oh honey... when the Mainstream you loathe tells you "Take a shower, get a job, get out of your childhood bedroom, and stop looking for stupid shit to get angry about, and we mean it, take that fucking shower"...

Then FYI the Mainstream is right and you are wrong.

Your comment is really interesting and added a lot to the conversation. Good job.

Learn your history. England was colonized by all african and middle east countries. It's normal for the whites to not be in the movies since they are extinct.

Didn't you know that it was common back then to see a dуkе girl boss and her fugly friend putting white men in their place, and lecturing people about the patriarchy?
You sexist pig.

The future is female! Slaaaaaaaayyy Kweeeeeeeeeen!!!!11!!!!!!!1!!!!

The future AND obviously the past ...

Sometime, after I see these movies, I wonder WHY are the feminists and racists complaining about patriarchy or oppression since I see NOTHING of that in these medieval fantasy movies ...

Au contraire, the females and people of color are the most successful demographic ...
