The story had been told and end with T2, there was no natural way to continue the story unless you did a future war movie, maybe they just made it as an easy buck recognition off of the name which is the motivation most of the time with sequels.
This movie is basically Terminator 2 beat for beat in a family friendly manner.
Most like of the Terminator sequels this was something made that is pointless.

Yes, it is not amazing to any degree, but I enjoy Arnie, and the real stunts action, and even appreciated the dull ending where they do their thing.
i know almost everyone loved t2 when it was released but i can't recall if anyone was clamoring for another sequel, i would guess everyone figured the story was over. it's possible they were clamoring, but i guess i didn't hear about it through word of mouth or on the internet. i think if people were hoping for a follow up sequel, it was more in lines of terminator vs robocop or terminator vs predator or the future war.
shareI don't hate this movie, but I believe if this sequel was never made the Terminator saga would've ended at T2 which was where it should've ended. I mean really you make a sequel from 91 to 03? No one else asked for this movie to be made at the time and it should've stayed that way to keep a perfect saga from getting butchered.

No one realised what this was going to be and how the industry would change over the next two decades to become almost completely saturated with insipid, safe, unimaginative, cynical crap made for idiots who will hand over money for any old shit.
Some people have the idea that a series has to be trilogy, so since Terminator was just two movies, the producers probably thought they had to make at least one more even if the story was fully told in two films.

If judgement day is delayed would that not effect a lot of other stuff.
Everything surely is based on circumstances but change one thing and you can change everything e.g. the events of judgement day may have been what caused Reece's parents to meet and the change stops that.
Only thing I can think of is the date in T3 was always the right one but Reece was told the wrong one, the reason being that that's what he said if that makes sense - John may know the correct date but knows that Reece in the past gave another so he makes sure this is what Reece says - basically John is making sure the loop does not break.
However I feel that might be too over the top

...except it didn't. In as few words as possible, Adult John can't exist unless Baby John is conceived, and Baby John can't be conceived without the actions of Adult John.
It doesn't matter whether or not Judgement Day is inevitable, it's still a paradox.
The first time Skynet was created, it was ultimately thwarted by a man named John Connor. There was nothing special about him; he was just the right guy in the right place at the right time. The leader of the resistance, the saviour of mankind. His father was just some guy.
That skynet was beat, but in its last days sent a terminator back in time to kill Sarah Connor to prevent John's birth. John sent back a guy to protect her. Maybe he volunteered, maybe he was chosen. Dude called Kyle Reese. He saves Sarah, but is probably killed in the process. During the events, he and Sarah fell in love, and conceived a child. She knew to name him John. This is a different John Connor from the first time these events happened. This man was raised knowing Judgement Day was coming. His mother taught him how to kill the machines.
When Skynet was about to die again, this John Connor knew who he had to send back in time. Kyle Reese, his father. This Kyle had heard many stories about Sarah Connor. He idolised her. He loved her before he even travelled through time. He volunteered to go. They fell in love, he died, John Connor was born. This is the sequence of events we see in the first film.

shareThe other thing that makes every movie after T2 unnecessary, the template of T2 of a reprogrammed Terminator fighting a liquid metal Terminator while protecting the future leader of the résistance is kind of hard to be unpredictable at all when it's like a commonplace with everyone, all the surprises of the first two movies aren't there so your just watching these rehashes with the scenes and plot points you know are coming which takes you out of the experience of watching them.
