Well the upcoming tv series shows what it would look like if it was made today. If you want to be faithful to the books the movies did them right with the casting and if you have a problem with that you’re a racist.

I of course assume you have read The Hobbit. It’s a slim volume, about 1.5 inches thick in paperback, at most, about one-fifth the size of the 3 editions of The Lord of the Rings combined; yet it grew to THE SAME RUNNING LENGTH as the theatrical release of LOTR.
Lord help us if Jackson, flailing for some kind of exoneration after his failures at this and The Lovely Bones essays The Silmarillion. He lacks the wit.
To this day, the old Rankin-Bass animated TV version of The Hobbit is my go-to for that story as a movie. While not perfect, as if leaves out Beorn and the Arkenstone, it gets the tone right & respects the source material. It even includes a lot of the songs from the book!

Me too! At least back in the early 2000s, Hollywood [mostly] respected people's wishes when it came to story-telling. Now all they can do is shove a ton of minorities in that can't act, and use a sub-standard script to tell a shitty story.
I do recall some whining back then about the lack of black people in the movie, and honestly, I don't give a shit. You don't see me whining about the lack of white people in movies like "Phat Girlz" or "The Preacher's Wife."
