Still the best Mission Impossible movie

And a lot of that is due to the stylish work of director DePalma.

I have a hard time picking between this and Rogue Nation. Ghost Protocol and Fallout aren't too far behind.

Even though I admire Brad Bird's and McQuarrie's contributions to the franchise... De Palma is the most talented filmmaker to have helmed a Mission: Impossible film, not only did he translate the TV Series into cinemas in a way that to this day still hasn't been matched, but with the use of Hitchcock references, dutch angles and other camera work he made the movie feel like an actual spy film first (that had some action and heist elements), all of the following installments are action movies first (with heist and spy elements).

I also love Elfman's score and rendition of the main theme and Koepp's contributions to the script.

I wish De Palma and Cruise had gotten along during the making of the film and had continued their collaboration because this could have been the beginning of something really good.

Even though I have praised this movie so much, the one I enjoy the most is Ghost Protocol, even though I consider this one to be the best directed one... Ghost Protocol is the most fun, Fallout was also amazing and is perhaps the one that has the largest scope-ambition.

Rogue Nation is a solid entry, seems like production was rushed a bit in order to beat Spectre's release.

Part 3 was okay-ish... Philip Seymour Hoffman is perhaps the best villain out of the entire series.

I can watch all of them except...

Part 2 which is one of the worst movies I've ever seen.

All the “this”!!

Yeah I love the fact it is more a spy film then an action film.

I think a lot of fans of the TV series didn't like the fact that Phelps went bad. The teamwork of the series isn't as prominent in the films.

I've always thought a modern series could also work

It's sad that the closest thing we've had to a modern series was Leverage.

The original is a great espionage thriller but I think Fallout is the best of the bunch to date. The entire series of films is like a 21st century James Bond played only by Tom Cruise which is incredible considering the near time span of 25 years.

I feel the same way!

It's the only one I like actually. Not to completely dismiss the others, they're ok for what they are and undoubtedly please more people overall.

No.

I totally agree.

I tried watching the earlier sequels a few times [i.g., and a few attempts to rewatch], but I just didn't like them. I preferred the direction and atmosphere of the initial film.
