Why did it take so long for Hollywood to rip this off?

It wasn't until that Tom Cruise movie from a few years ago that the floodgates started to open.

reply

Seems there were 1983 and 2010 live action versions of The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, and also a 2006 animated film.

reply

just found this conversation again.
deja vu!

still havent watched that dvd

reply

Maybe because the box office gross was not all that spectacular: it finished behind such films as Free Willy and Cliffhanger.

According to Wikipedia, it was the 19th highest grossing film of 1993.

The film only took off in popularity after being rerun endlessly on cable ever since it left the theaters.

reply

That is incorrect. This movie made over 100 million dollars in 1993 on a 14 million dollar budget. It was a HUGE theatrical success.

reply

I remember seeing the movie 12:01 on TV some time back.

That was made in 1993.

reply

I always liked that movie when it was on TV!

A couple of years ago, I was able to watch it online. I was surprised how much I remembered.

reply

Deja vu?

12 Monkeys?

Time Cop?

Back to the Future series (which preceded Groundhog Day)

reply

There was a rather famous episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation about an ever-repeating time loop pretty much right around the time of Groundhog Day.
