Did this movie disturb you as a child?

I remember the scene when the Penguin announced he planned to drown all of Gotham's first-borns made me break out into a cold sweat and feel like I was going to pass out! Seriously, nothing disturbed me as a child more than watching Batman Returns.

Didn't get the chance to - I was married with a child by the time this came out!

Thanks for your reply. I actually forgot to mention I first saw this movie in the cinema and found it as disturbing AF. But then I rewatched it on VHS 2 years later and found it ok.

reply

I've certainly always found it darker than Batman '89. Probably one of the reasons I prefer it.

reply

Yeah. I like this movie too. my parents took me to see it.

I was too young to watch Returns in theaters... but when I finally saw it at home a couple of years later I didn't even understand what was happening with the children since they are not featured-shown on screen, only mentioned very briefly as part of Penguin's evil plan... and I believe he only kidnaps Chip (Max's grownup son) who was probably older than my dad at the time of the movie lol.

I just thought that Penguin was a bad man, but was not afraid of being in any danger myself.

This was and still is my favorite Batman movie... my favorite scene is when Selina and Bruce figure out each other's real identity during the ball event.

One of THE best scenes out of all the Batman movies đź‘Ť

Andrew Bryniarski was only 22/23 when he filmed this movie.

reply

Looked late 30s lol.

reply

Honestly? He looked like a college-age man/early 20s to me.

reply

Yeah, it creeped me out. You don't state your age, but I was 7 when it came out. I couldn't convince my parents to take me to the theater for it, but I saw it on video when it was still a recent release. Always creepy. Just the atmosphere, tone, the strange actions the characters commit. But that darkness adds to its mystique and allure as an adult, I still watch it at least once every holiday season

reply

The Penguin was pretty creepy in this. It's the only Batman movie I don't watch every time it's on TV.

reply

Yeah the kids being loaded into cages scared me as a kid.

reply

Well I was already 26 when this film was released. I don’t remember thinking the movie was too morbid, mostly that Burton made the Penguin too freakish.

reply

I always found Returns to be too stylised to take seriously, it looks like filmed theatre.

The first film had a better balance of Burton madness with some realism (plus Jack fucking Nicholson)

reply

Nope. I was 10 when this came out. By then, I'd already watched total recall, Robocop 1&2, Predator, Tremors, Alien, Aliens, Batman, TMNT, From Beyond, Maximum overdrive, Platoon, Silence of the Lambs, terminator, etc...

My parents didn't impose restrictions on content aside from the Toxic Avenger on my 9th Birthday.
