what made this movie so dang popular?

finally lost to sleeping with the enemy

reply

The real question is who the hell went to see Sleeping with the Enemy one time and why.

reply

Touché.

reply

I did. I liked it.
That is when Roberts was super popular after Pretty Woman.

reply

That's no excuse.

reply

You can also blame the filmmakers for making it correlate with Roberts' image compared to the novel it was based on, which surely only helped even more. Like Home Alone, quite a few probably paid to see SWTE again.

FAMILY APPEAL...HOLIDAY APPEAL...SOLID FILM...POWERHOUSE CHILD ACTOR PERFORMANCE...JOHN HUGHES...PESCI & STERN...THIS FILM HAD/HAS EVERYTHING GOING FOR IT.

reply

It was a sweet, charming, funny, relatable film that had a heart and was centered around the holidays, but more than anything it had a shining star in Macaulay Culkin who people just couldn’t get enough of.

reply

It was a Christmas comedy with a lot slapstick humor and a cute kid as it's selling point as the lead.

reply

The theme with a kid setting up all these home made traps to stop a couple of burglars must've felt quite new and funny when it came out ..And it's a well made movie overall with a pleasant message that still holds up thirty years later.

reply

culkin, pesci, christmas

reply

The booby traps which was very creative along with it being a Christmas movie.

reply

Plus, Culkin's charisma and the concept of being accidentally left at home.

reply

Beats me. I saw it once and was not moved. No interest in ever seeing it again, or any sequels. I never got on the Culkin hype train.
