Season One is really really bad.

I haven't watched this since it came out in '87. Age and a little maturity has shown me how bad this show is. The dialogue is extremely cheesy and most of the acting is atrocious. If I recall, it gets much better. But initially, it's a mess.

Season 2 wasn't much better, but it did have The Measure of a Man and Q Who, which stand with the best of the episodes of the entire series.

reply

To be fair The Measure of a Man is one of the best TNG episodes overall. But yes I agree, there were still a few problems that needed correcting still in s2, s3 they really hit their stride.

reply

Precisely. Measure of a Man is probably in my top 5 favorites.

reply

Yes it's a fantastic episode and I hate how they completely shat on it in S1 of Picard! It was like they didn't understand the episode at all. All of a sudden androids are just tools to be used, a sub class (Good morning plastic people!) Urrgh I detest it.

reply

Compared to the dogshit Star Trek has become with Discovery, season 1 of TNG is brilliant.

Season 1 was fine, I enjoyed it. The dialogue and acting isn't that much different from TOS, and Gene was heavily involved. Season 1 is the reason I kept watching TNG into Season 2 and beyond after all. One of the more notable episodes, 'Skin of Evil', recently made a bit of a comeback with many out there speculating that Armus may have been the one behind the Red Door in this latest season of Picard.

And we all remember the episode where the Borg were first introduced in Season 2 episode 'Q Who' when the Enterprise was thrown deep into the Beta Quadrant by the enigmatic Q. We also got Guinan's knowledge and perspective on both Q and the Borg, further building character development.

As for Doctor Pulaski, she was fine and I couldn't imagine anyone different replacing Doctor Crusher for an entire season.

Two words: wesley crusher

Yes, I totally disliked the character. He had some good episodes; however, how the show just basically dropped him as a regular role, irked me. In addition to how the show wrapped up the character, just bad, very bad.

I'm currently watching the series (about to start season 7). It's the first time I've seen it since its original run. The first season was quite boring. The show got better midway through the second season. There is a lot of bad to the show: some character makeup, some art-direction on planets and storylines are sometimes laughable. Having said that, the show is just fun and I always look forward to another episode.

reply

Season One was the "shakedown cruise".

reply

There are a lot of mediocre to downright bad episodes in season one but there are several good ones like Datalore, that second appearance of Q and Heart of Glory... But the single best episode of the season is also one of the best of Star Trek: The Big Goodbye. It gets forgotten in the virtual avalanche of Holodeck stories but it is the first and it asked the questions that would only be repeated later.

reply

Nonsense. In season 1, and, to a lesser extent, season 2, the crew were full fledged adults. After that they descended into formula and pap pretty quickly.
