Carrie Fisher nearly naked

Was that actually her in those scenes or a body double? Very sexy for a kids film.

reply

That was her. There seems to be a lot of controversy these days about the outfit but people forget that she herself requested the change. She was tired of playing Leia with her breasts taped down.

reply

I don't believe she ever requested the change, I've never heard that before.

Quote:

It was like, "Where am I in all of this?" ... I have to stay with the slug with the big tongue! Nearly naked, which is not a style choice for me. ... It wasn't my choice. When [director George Lucas] showed me the outfit, I thought he was kidding and it made me very nervous. I had to sit very straight because I couldn't have lines on my sides, like little creases. No creases were allowed, so I had to sit very, very rigid straight.

What redeems it is I get to kill him, which was so enjoyable. ... I sawed his neck off with that chain that I killed him with. I really relished that because I hated wearing that outfit and sitting there rigid straight, and I couldn't wait to kill him.

End quote.

She hating the outfit and wanted to be done with it made for some excellent scenes.

Unfortunately this is one of those things I can't prove. Can't find it on a website.
I'm old enough to remember when the movie came out and she did the talk show circuit. She said that in the first two movies the producers did not want Leia sexualized. They had the costume people literally tape her breasts down. She approached them and said she wasn't going to do that anymore. She wanted to be more feminine and show off. The metal bikini was the result and she used it to her advantage to compete with the other sexy female stars of the time.
Now in the present atmosphere you can't say those things so they have to rewrite history to make it politically correct.

reply

It sounds like both the quote and your explanation could be correct. I can understand her wanting to be shown a bit more sexy....but dang, that outfit didn't really suit her. She could be sexy without being nearly naked and upright.

reply

" that outfit didn't really suit her "....😲😲

reply

They're not "rewriting history", you're simply remembering something that didn't happen. She has mentioned the taping-down breasts thing before, but not in the context of wanting to be sexualized in this outfit as a response to it. This has absolutely nothing to do with political correctness, it has to do with Carrie Fisher's statements. If you can provide quotes or evidence of her stating your claims, that changes things.

It could be true that she wanted Leia to be more feminine and was tired of having her breast taped down. But I don't think that metal bikini was quite what she had in mind. Surely there was something in between that could accomplish both.

And let's be careful with how much we believe interviews from the time. There're many possibilities. Maybe she did hate it at the time but wouldn't dare speak out about it when they were promoting the movie, for fear that it would hurt the box office, as well as her reputation. Or maybe she was ok with it at the time, but as she got older and got more perspective on it, she felt more exploited by it and regretted doing it. And less we forget she was doing drugs at that time, including coke, which can lead to some odd life choices.

reply

Sort of odd since a few years after this she did a sexual scene with Tom Hanks where she was shown half naked in The Man with One Red Shoe.

reply

" I get to kill him, which was so enjoyable " I remember her saying the same at the Star Wars celebration in London in the year 2016.

Dang! I never knew she had such a kickin' body!

I never found her very attractive in Star Wars movies (not even in ROTJ), but some of those images look good...

I agree.

Re "taping down her boobs". here's what Carrie herself said:

"Carrie Fisher described the regal garment as "that damn white thing." In her book "Wishful Drinking," she revealed that director George Lucas insisted that she wear it without a supportive undergarment underneath it. "You can't wear a bra under that dress,'" she recalled him saying, per Goodreads. "So, I say, 'Okay, I'll bite. Why?' And he says, 'Because... there's no underwear in space.'" Fisher started sharing this story during her one-woman show, and Lucas attended one of the events. He spoke to the actor backstage and attempted to explain his reasoning. While she joked that he had acted as though he had visited a galaxy far, far away and "didn't see any bras or panties or briefs anywhere," he simply theorized that a brassiere would become too constricting in space. (Apparently, no one informed Lucas that many bras are adjustable.) "But then your body expands??? But your bra doesn't — so you get strangled by your own bra," Fisher wrote. "Now I think that this would make a fantastic obit — so I tell my younger friends that no matter how I go, I want it reported that I drowned in moonlight, strangled by my own bra."

So she used gaffer tape, I'm not sure if it was to keep things from getting too mobile, or to prevent droopage, or both.
