Voice of the chess computer, right?

reply

That is correct.

reply

The Thing is also female.

reply

There was a girl cast.. but she was pregnant and couldn't film.

So she got scrapped.

reply

interestingly, the highest rated movies on imdb have no female characters or only minor roles for females:

#1 sawshank redemption - a male prison movie
#2 the godfather - male gangsters
#3 the godfather - male gangsters
#4 the dark knight - apart from maggie gyllenhaal's character, no notable female roles
#5 12 angry men - well, the title says it all...

reply

The dark knight doesn't deserve to be on that list. What a joke.

reply

Nobody wanted a woman in there blathering about love or wanting babies.

reply

Yes there was: The Thing. You can tell because it was evil. Anyway another great all male one is Flight of the Phoenix (1965).

reply

How dare you?! How do you know one or several of the crew didn't identify as women?? Especially Wilford Brimley's character.

reply

You realize that was not a common thing most people condoned in 1982, right? Of course for all I know you could just be trolling.

reply

(Damn. Was hoping that'd be considered joking more than trolling... was counting on the Wilford Brimley bit to make that more or less obvious).

Yes, I realise that. That might also be true today by the way: I wouldn't be surprised if the vast majority of people on the planet -save for a very vocal minority- weren't entirely convinced that "identifying" as having particular biological/physiological traits or attributes was in itself a necessary and sufficient condition to be effectively recognised as displaying said traits or attributes.
I know I'm not. But I'm happy to live and let people live with their own delusions, in mutual respect, as long as they don't tell me what to think, say or do.

reply

Amen to that.

reply

Plenty of films back then and before had all male even all, brace yourself, white casts. I would prefer that over having females or minorities in the cast for no reason other than quotas.
