Loved in the 70's, not so much now...

In the 70's kids loved this movie. All I heard about it from friends at school was that it was really good and I couldn't wait to see it some day. My mother wouldn't let me see it because I was too young to go to rated R movies, but when I saw it years later I was really impressed with it all. Today, for some reason, people just don't like it and kids today think that the 2013 remake is better. I don't get it.

You like slower paced stories

reply

That is true Chip, with slower paced stories you get into the characters more.

reply

Probably because now people need non-stop Attention Deficit style action and high school characters who act like celebrities instead of real teenagers.

reply

Excellent theory.

The remake is pointless, cash grabbing, high gloss garbage, and it was completely unbelivable that Carrie - played by Chloe Moretz -would be so picked on by her peers. A sign of superficial and sanitised filmmaking when an "ugly ducking" has to be played by someone who looks like a model - who can barely hide their confidence.

That's not to say Sissy Spacek's Carrie was unattractive, but her homely, awkward, painfully shy demeanour and unwashed appearance made it completely convincing that she would be picked on.

reply

The remake should never have been made. Very few remakes are as good as the original. Hollywood just can't stop doing them though.

reply

Easy cash cow with brand recognition that audiences keep paying millions to see.

reply

Of course.

reply

Right? I wanna fuck the remake Carrie, not bully her!

reply

Yeah what is about Sissy Spacek? She's like the hottest ugly girl... Well, her and Shelley Duvall.

reply

I don't think I've met a kid who's seen the original, unfortunately. But I don't know that many kids.

reply

How anyone can think that the remake is better is so beyond me!

reply

There're still plenty of people who tout the first adaptation as being the best, simply because it was the first... Personally, I feel it's poorly acted and not very well made, so I'm not a fan of the 70s version. It's definitely better than the 2013 remake, but in my opinion the 2002 version is the best one.

reply

Not well made? It's Brian DePalma...lol

reply

So?

reply

So you obviously don't know anything about cinema and furthermore many of the actors involved had or were about to have long careers. Also both Piper Laurie and Sissy Spacek were nominated for Academy Awards for Carrie. And both were nominated for other movies too, while Spacek won an Oscar for Coal Miners Daughter. Betty Buckley has been nominated for awards 11 times and won a Tony award for Cats. Amy Irving has had 9 nominations for awards and won twice. Brian Depalma has been nominated many times for movies while winning an Academy Award for The Untouchables. Carrie 1976 has a IMDB score of 7.4, while 2002 has a 5.4. On RT Carrie 1976 has a 93% critics score and a 77% audience score. Carrie 2002 has a 20% critics score and a 50% audience score. So, with all that, plus being on many best of lists over the years, your opinion is not worthy of consideration. Very poor criticism and analysis also. Try to do better next time. You get an F for this assignment.

Cool story, bro.
Something being good for the time doesn't mean it holds up.
Like I said, it's just my opinion (not an analysis, like you seem to think) and your "consideration" of it is meaningless. I know nostalgia is a strong drug and people sure love huffing its fumes, but man, some of these so called classics are just plain bad and you're taking this way too seriously.

reply

Nah, I don't think so. You are just not fit to judge movies. Case closed. Bye.

reply

lmfao, are you a child? "Case closed" AHAHAHAHAHHA!
You don't think, period.
You just regurgitate scores.

Aw, quitting so soon?
K, bye now!

reply

I'd like to see things from your point of view, but I can't seem to get my head that far up my arse.

I love this movie. It is such a well crafted film, compellingly acted and the director took some interesting chances throughout. It is based on my favorite Stephen King novel, though I didn't watch this film until about a year ago or so. I had seen the remake when it came out, which looked and felt like a tv movie, very low quality and not well acted at all. I am not sure why it took me so long to watch the original but when I did it was definitely worth the wait. Superior horror film in every way.
