Taylor Swift has appeared on camera for a total of 123 seconds over the last four Kansas City Chiefs games

"A romance between the pop star and Travis Kelce has dominated social media, but TV broadcasts are focusing on it less than many seem to think," says The New York Times' Benjamin Hoffman, who actually measured Swift's on-screen appearances since Christmas. Last weekend, for Chiefs-Bills, Swift appeared for 24 seconds. For the Jan. 13 Chiefs-Dolphins game, she appeared for 1 minute and 16 seconds, for Chiefs-Bengals on New Year's Eve, she appeared for 12 seconds. And for Chiefs-Raiders on Christmas Day, she was shown for 14 seconds. As Sunday Night Football coordinating producer Rob Hyland explains: “It is always a balance with what’s happening on the field and how you can enhance what’s happening on the field. It wasn’t like, ‘Hey, let’s, let’s show her this many times.’ It was, ‘Hey, when appropriate, let’s remind the audience that she’s there.’”

It is always about how to increase the TV viewership, I think that is the only reason.

Imagine if Taylor Swift was performing in concert and it kept cutting back to Travis Kelce in the crowd? People are there to watch a football game, not the reaction of one of the player's girlfriends who showed no interest in the sport before.

Where's the outrage here?

Why should she have to have an interest in the sport to support her boyfriend? What if the camera cut to his mother in the stands? By your standard they should never show anyone in the crowd. Period.

reply

This actually what I was talking about in my post. They typically show all the celebrities once before the game, and that is the end of it. They don’t go back to them 10 times during the game to get a reaction every time something happens.

As far as showing the mother, that would happen for 2 reasons. If brothers are opposing teams, for example Chiefs/Eagles. They would go to the parents throughout the game, but that would also be a one off, it wouldn’t happen every game. Or if the parent was a character, and had some reactions worth showing. Taylor is just kind of there.

To be clear though, I don’t blame her. She should be there to support her boyfriend, and she has no control over how much she is shown.

That is over 2 minutes, that is a very long time in fact.

for someone that has nothing to do with the game.

reply

exactly

reply

Arnt these games not actually "in play" for the majority of the time though?

reply

BINGO!

reply

With all the slack in a majority of Super Bowl games, there will be PLENTY of time for much more of Taylor.

reply

That’s a lot to be honest. How long is each Taylor swift reaction shot? 3-5 seconds? That means they are panning over to her 6-10 times a game. That’s not a balance. There are celebrities at sports events all the time. They usually pan over to them once before the game, to get a wave or something, and then move on.

reply

The biggest pop star in the world right now is worth turning a camera on 6-10 times over a 3-4 hour period, for a game that's supposed to take 1 hour.

They stop the game to show commercials which aids the League's revenue. They can exploit the attendance of Taylor Swift to boost the League and the sport's profile, a couple of times an hour when the play is already stopped.

Those celebrity fans who only popped up once per game? How come NFL films always includes as much as they possibly can of that celebrity appearance. Every time they show a Sanders film, there's Hammer. A Bears film? There's Bill Murray. And so on.

reply

Does it really matter where the camera is pointed when game play is not in progress?

reply

it does matter .... because they should show the players and coaches, so we can see what they are up to.

instead they go to commercial constantly!

but yet there is time to show Taylor for 2 minutes during a game?? that's ridiculous

reply

As I recall, the camera showed Swift's reaction of various plays on the field. No game time was missed while the camera was on Swift. Ridiculous or not, CBS made those decisions; their money, not ours.

reply

Still it does not make sense...... Christian McCaffrey's wife is also well known, they never show her when he scores a TD.

And the second a player is injured, they cut to commercial!!
So disrespectful..... pretty sure the fans want to know right away if the player is okay.

Instead they have to wait 5 minutes, and then the game is is in full swing again and the commentator just gives a casual update on the injured players condition!

Maybe all these things combined is what make fans upset of the unnecessary Swift shots!

reply

Meh, never heard of Mrs. McCaffrey. Why does this matter? Perhaps people who get upset over a TV show need to get a life instead?
