GOP warning: Don’t “ monkey up” Florida!

Florida’s GOP candidate for Governor Ron DeSantis warned Floridians not to “ monkey up” the state and vote for his Democrat opponent, who happens to be black.

FOX news says it’s perfectly fine to say that.

Let that racism sink in for a while.

reply

Yeah but of course the diehards are insisting it's not racist. I see they've been circulating a video of Obama saying "both parties monkeyed around with elections" as their "proof".

DeSantis better be counting on Governor Scott to have his state election security unlocked and loose for the Russians to rig for him, because this is the kind of thing that will turn out the black vote in force to vote against him.

reply

It's one of two things:

1) Racist.

2) Stupidity so mind-numbing that it should be disqualifying from holding any office. Seriously, in the wake of the Roseanne fallout how dumb do you have to be to say something like that?

Has anyone ever heard the expression "monkey it up" before? I don't think I have.

reply

I never have. FOX News is doing their damnest to say "monkey it up" is very common lingo. They trotted out their resident 'minority' liberal Juan Williams in front of their assorted white hosts to debate whether this was racist or not. All of them told him 'no, it's not racist - you're imagining things' as he walked off with slumped shoulders.

Notice they didn't put Harris Faulkner into the mix of discussions, and ask her what she thought about the term 'monkey it up' when referring to a black candidate. It would have been nice if Faulkner and Williams had an on-air discussion about the term.

reply

Fox News is embracing the far left who insist that we need to obsess over things like whether a word is racist.

The far left is for rich white people.

You have to really hate poor people to brush aside policy issues that affect them in favor of hurt feelings of rich white liberals, who own FOX as well as every other media outlet.

reply

I agree. It's not even a good "dog whistle" because of how uncommon it is.

DeSantis is one of the worst partisan hacks and Trump sycophants in congress (along with Meadows, Nunes, Gaetz, and Jim Jordan). There's no way this wasn't deliberate even if he clearly didn't put a whole lot of thought behind it. But it was also mind numbingly stupid for thinking such an overtly racist allusion could be passed off as a dog whistle.

So I say it's both.

reply

The Trumpers won't care. Most of them are racists themselves.

reply

It's not even about the Trumpers caring or not caring anymore. They're all giddy fascists beyond redemption at this point.

It's about ensuring everyone not a trumper in Florida that does care turns out so overwhelmingly for the midterms that they can overcome the obvious disadvantage in a state where their corrupt GOP governor is turning a blind eye to election security.

It's a daunting task to be sure, but I have to hope it's not insurmountable. Because Florida is still a swing state with some Dem checks and balances unlike, say Georgia which is a lost cause.

reply

Yeah, I've visited Florida many times and it really is a mixed back of republicans/democrats. That will be an interesting race for sure.

And Georgia...ugh...LOL! I've been there and...yeah.

reply

Why do you think black people look like monkeys? They clearly do not.

reply

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^Gotta love watching when trumptards try to play dumb, only confirming they are dumb for so transparently trying to play dumb. LMAO!

How about instead of deflecting, answer the question.

reply

luulz. The dumb act continues, except it's not an act. LMAO!

reply

That's great. I still dont think they look like monkeys. Are you going answer or not?

reply

Except it doesn't matter what you think skippy. It's long been used as a racist slur because some people do think that. Like I said, it's not an act because you really are that dumb. LMAO!

reply

I want to know what you think.

Black people do not look like monkeys. Do you agree or disagree with this statement?

reply

I agree with eYe...this clueless act you are putting on is pathetic. Comparing African Americans to monkeys as a racist remark has been going on for over a century. For you to pretend not to understand that makes me think you are pretty damn racist yourself.

But I'll play your sad little game and give you a direct answer; no I don't think black people resemble monkeys.

reply

Awesome, I dont want your answer....I want his.

I do understand, and I disagree with it. 100%

reply

Oh gee, so now you understand skippy? lolol. Well of course I don't think black people resemble monkeys either. What would ever make you ask such a silly little boy question like that? LMAO!

reply

The OP never mentioned black people looking like monkeys. In fact, nobody in this thread did until you arrived.

reply

Thank You! I was going to address this earlier, but then I figured it would be lost on B1cKsurN.

reply

Do you have autism? This is a serious question not meant in a malicious way. I think people with autism sometimes struggle to read between the lines and that could be why you don't see that the OP is being deliberately provocative.

reply

Nope. No autism here. Even if the OP was being provocative, it has nothing to do with what B1cKsurN wrote.

reply

Shows the USA up for the vacuously racist, ultra-right wing reactionary country the world suspects it is...

reply

"Search Results
Definition of monkey with. informal. : to handle or play with (something) in a careless way : to monkey around with (something) I told you not to monkey with the lawn mower."

I did not read racism in this at all.Monkey up was obviously the equivalent of screw up in this case.

reply

Yes I've heard "monkey with" before but never monkey it up. If it wasn't racist, and I admit it may not be, it was a stupid choice of words. Like incredibly stupid. Like mind bogglingly stupid.

reply

Monkey with , monkey up.Screw with , screw up.It's all the same.Different iterations of the same term.He should have chosen a better choice of words but i see nothing racist in his statement.

reply

I personally have never head the term "monkey up" and it strikes me as a strange choice of words. But racist or not, given what happened just a couple months ago with Roseanne, I stand by my belief that it was an incredibly stupid choice of words.

reply

Why is it racist? People who aren't obsessed with race use terms like monkey to mean screwing around; because they do not think of other people as monkey's like you do.

"Hey, hey, we're the Monkees
And people say we monkey around
But we're too busy singing
To put anybody down" THEY ARE RACISTS!!!!!!! wearing whiteface to cover up all the blackface they are wearing.

reply

When Republicans and Fox News referred to Obama as “ Curious George” and compared his picture to that of the cartoon monkey, it was meant to be racist. That implication - and that of De Santis -is racist.

reply

Well I'm glad when I watch Curious George, I do not think he is a human with a different skin color than me.

reply

I'm glad you think that way, too. I'm not glad with Rethuglikkkans who don't.

reply

I seriously hate this clueless act as if you don't know why it's racist. Here's a link with a history lesson on the long sad history of black people being compared to monkeys.

https://www.historyonthenet.com/authentichistory/diversity/african/3-coon/6-monkey/

From the page:

"A hateful association between Blacks and monkeys or apes was yet another way that the antebellum South justified slavery. Blacks were considered by some Whites to be more simian than human, and therefore had no self-evident rights, including freedom. After the Civil War, the emancipation of slaves, and passage of the 13th, 14th, and 15 amendments to the Constitution, White bigots used the association to justify Jim Crow laws, and the use of violence, such as the lynching of Blacks who challenged or threatened the status quo. The general acceptance of the evolutionary theories of Charles Darwin was easily twisted into a means of identifying further "evidence" of the primitive status of Blacks. In the 1878 cartoon to the right, for example, an organ grinder's monkey is attacking a black child. Beneath is the caption, "Southern Scenes--An incident in Richmond, VA--The Darwinian Theory Illustrated". Presumably, the monkey feels that his position is challenged by the child, and he's defending his territory. Meanwhile, a drastically caricatured black man watches with a mirthful look on his face."

Also from the page:

"All too often, the White perpetrators of these incidents claim to be ignorant of the history. Studies show that only about 8% of White Americans claim to be aware of the history of the association between Blacks and apes. Whether or not this is true, some disturbing research released in 2009 clearly shows a high level of subconscious engagement with this association."

I repeat my earlier comment that if he truly did not intend this to be racist, it was an incredibly stupid choice of words.

reply

Excellent post Markdown!

But if the winner that came out of that Dem primary had been white, can you really see him using the same "monkey up" comment? I honestly cannot

reply

Honestly neither can I. But if I inherited anything from my mother it's the desire to want to give people the benefit of the doubt. Which is why I'm open to the possibility that it was simple stupidity and not blatant racism.

reply

It was dog whistling. If you're unfamiliar with the political tactic, see my post a few down.

reply

I'm familiar with it and I think it's the most likely answer.

reply

No, not if he was white.

reply

I agree that there is a sad shameful racist history of comparing blacks to monkeys. But the word is not used in that context here. The guy is clearly,at least to me,using the term monkey up in relation to screwing up the situation or state of affairs. The word monkey in and of itself is not racist unless used directly in that context.IMO it wasn't here.

reply

He could have used “ screw up” instead, as you referenced in the post.

reply

True. After the Rosanne incident it would have been smarter to not use the word monkey at all in any context.

reply

Ever heard of dog whistles horrorfan? Dog-whistle politics is political messaging employing coded language that appears to mean one thing to the general population but has an additional, different, or more specific resonance for a targeted subgroup. Dog whistles have a storied history in Republican politics going back to Nixon and his infamous Southern Strategy to appeal to racist voters. Republicans long denied its very existence until the late Republican smear merchant, political strategist, and adviser to presidents Reagan and Bush, the infamous Lee Atwater admitted in a confessional interview as he was dying of terminal brain cancer to it being a longtime GOP strategy. The recorded interview was released in 2012 and made serious waves.

Very offensive Atwater quote follows:

Atwater: You start out in 1954 by saying, “Nigger, nigger, nigger.” By 1968 you can’t say “nigger”—that hurts you, backfires. So you say stuff like, uh, forced busing, states’ rights, and all that stuff, and you’re getting so abstract. Now, you’re talking about cutting taxes, and all these things you’re talking about are totally economic things and a byproduct of them is, blacks get hurt worse than whites.… “We want to cut this,” is much more abstract than even the busing thing, uh, and a hell of a lot more abstract than “Nigger, nigger.”

Make no mistake, the way DeSantis deployed "monkey it up" is classic dog whistle politics. Just enough plausible deniability to have the general populace deny it was used in a racist context like you were just doing, but to the racists among Trump's republican base, the message was LOUD AND CLEAR.

reply

I have never heard of that term before in my life.

reply

Let's just hope that DeSantis never meets up with Melania. God knows what he will "innocently" say to her...

"Looks like your marriage hit some Stormy weather, huh?"

"I hope your husband doesn't doogle his chances for re-election."

reply

Has anyone provided evidence of the phrase "monkey it up" being used in a racist manner? Ever?

I ran a Google search predating this month & found only benign usages.

reply

The key word there is 'monkey' bud. Read Markdown's post a few up for more context.

reply

But like horrorfan pointed out above, context matters.

I'm willing to be persuaded on this. Via Google, I've just pointed you to thousands of examples of people saying what DeSantis said without a drop of racial animus. All I'm asking for is 1 counter-example.

reply

Read my post on dog whistles. That's what it was.

reply

here is the full quote for all you liberal low IQ retards, who in fact are the ones linking the word monkey to black people....

DeSantis said: "The last thing we need to do is monkey this up by trying to embrace a socialist agenda with huge tax increases and bankrupting the state.

"That is not going to work. That's not going to be good for Florida, so I'm going to fight for what I believe in because I think I'm the guy who can lead Florida in a good direction."

He also used the words "articulate" and "charismatic" to describe the left-wing Democrat.

reply

Sure he did. It was still an unmistakable dog whistle to Trump's racist base. That should be obvious to anyone with a brain.
