she may not be indigenous

i am shocked that it is the cbc that is outing her.

My PVR is set!

It'd be a damn shame because I really like that song Priests of the Golden Bull.

reply

i will try and watch this.

reply

I know I can't be the only person that's totally sick and tired of this race and ethnic stuff all the time.
It's really disgusting and many thousands are dead.

Jews and Palestinians are killing each other.
Russians and Ukrainians are killing each other.
If New York declares war on Canada for ownership of Niagara Falls I may move to Canada to avoid the draft, but then Canada would draft me and I'd have to practice missing shots at my cousins from New York.

We need to calm down and drop this ancient stuff, it's all pretty shameful and stupid.

i'm a viking

For some reason everything is identity now and it's getting absurd. That singer, Adele, she thought she would be healthy and tried losing weight. People told her she wasn't being authentic to her real identity as a fat woman. It's crazy.

Fun fact: The song "American Woman" is referring to the Statue of Liberty. The Guess Who had a gig in New York and were warned that simply by entering the country, even though they were Canadian, they could be called into the draft. The whole: "American Woman, get away from me" is essentially them saying, "yo fuck that Statue, we're not going near it if we might get drafted".

reply

Huh! I learn something new here at least a couple times a week.

reply

She may not have any documentation, but if you look at her facial features, really, what else could she be? I'm sure a 23&Me test would set this straight in no time.

reply

She looks mediterranean with a fake orange tan.

reply

I don't see any Mediterranean look to her.

She actually looks exactly like Native Americans/First Nations Plains Tribes people of the 19th century as seen in historic photos, but not much at all like Native Americans of 2023. Her features, like nose and cheekbones, are much more pronounced than modern Natives, who mainly seem to have softer more rounded faces. Look at old photos of Natives and you will see how much she resembles the historic facial type.

reply

She looks as Native as Cher did back in the 60s...

If you imagine her without the tan and weird hairstyle, she could just as well pass for Greek/Italian.

reply

She has very similar features to this authentic 19th century Lakota, Kicking Bear.

I do not know any Italian women who look like Buffy Sainte-Marie.

reply

Lol, come on. That guy has way higher cheekbones, a rounder face, slanted eyes and a totally different nose.

I guess you haven't seen that many Italian women then.

Just look at a photo of her and her ex-husband Sheldon Wolfchild to see how more European her features look.

reply

Half of my dad's family were Italian women. None of them had faces like that.

Of course the guy in the picture had stronger features because he was a man.

reply

You know, there are 80 million people of Italian descent in the world, they don't all look exactly the same. The large nose with the tip pointing downwards is a feature you'll often find in the mediterranean area. The noses of the guy in the picture and Sheldon Wolfchild are wide and more flat. Buffy looks more like she could pass for mixed-race.

"Of course the guy in the picture had stronger features because he was a man."

😐

reply

"Of course the guy in the picture had stronger features because he was a man."

So you are sincerely offended because I stated the commonly accepted fact that men normally have stronger features than women?

There are also a great variety of Native people in North America, and not all of them have wide, flat noses. Large, curved noses are very or were very common among unmixed Plains tribes. There aren't many unmixed native people left, though, so perhaps the original features no longer seem "authentic" to people more familiar with modern Native looks.

reply

Offended??? What the hell are you even talking about? Here let me give you another:

😐

"and not all of them have wide, flat noses."

I didn't even say that, I was comparing her to the guy in the picture. However you said her facial features are native american (clearly not compared to the two examples) and she couldn't pass for mediterranean. Which is interesting because I see CBC have now apparently published evidence that her biological father was Italian (while her mother was English). So there you go.

reply

If you're denying the obvious resemblance between their facial features, it seems there is no point in continuing this debate.

Whatever SainteMarie's real lineage is, she is obviously Native-looking enough to have fooled millions of people for 60 years. Nobody ever looked at her and said "Wow, she looks so Italian!" because the vast majority of Italian people do not resemble 19th century Plains Indians.

Your input on this reminds me of people who look at the innocent high school photo of a killer after their crimes have been made known and say "Look! You can see the madness in their eyes!"

reply

Your example is simply not a very good example. What you say are similarities are actually differences. Even if there are similarities, it's certainly no proof those features are exclusively Native American.

Don't be so oversensitive. I'm not suggesting whatsoever everyone should've seen through her ruse. But you sound like someone who finds out a high school friend is a serial killer and says "He can't be guilty, he was always such a polite kid!". You were tricked, deal with it.

Anyway, the point is that you said that if "you look at her facial features, really, what else could she be?" And I simply responded saying she looked mediterranean with a fake orange tan. Turns out she is. And that's all.

reply

I'm still amazed that you cannot see the similarities between them. I understand some people have a problem with that.

Sacheen Littlefeather claimed to be native American and she wasn't

https://www.theguardian.com/film/2022/oct/24/sacheen-littlefeather-faked-native-american-ancestry-say-family

reply

Yeah, she was Mexican-American.

If Buffy Sainte-Marie is not really a native person, that means that there have been no truly famous Native women musicians in history. The most famous Native woman is probably now the actress, Tantoo Cardinal.

reply

Most Mexicans have some indigenous ancestry.

reply

Most Mexicans try to deny that fact most vigorously. One of my Mexican-American in-laws says that's why many Mexican men grow moustaches: to avoid being mistaken for Indios.

reply

Well she has to be indigenous to somewhere, doesn't she?

reply

Relevant stuff:
Do I like her personality?
Do I like her songs?

Irrelevant stuff:
Is she or is she not "indigenous"? I couldn't give a fuck.

reply

Well, if she says she is and she isn't, that's something.

There are government benefits for indigenous people and if she took them away from someone else, that's not cool.

reply

Apparently she isn't even Canadian!

reply

i wonder why her parents went along with it?

https://www.cbc.ca/newsinteractives/features/buffy-sainte-marie

reply

Apparently she liked to threaten family members with legal action. I do wonder who suddenly decided to out her after all these years

But PLEASE tell me Graham Greene is still a native AND a Canadian!

reply

He is. But I'm shocked he's only 71. I think he's lying about that.

reply

Yes, I see he does seem to have aged significantly in recent years. He did suffer from depression at some point. Maybe some kind of substance abuse?

reply

i watched the fifth estate. her whole life is a lie. she started the lies in the 70s when here career was on the downside. the show provides documents like census records and even her own marriage certificate that she was born and raised in massachusetts and was white. her brother tried to set the record straight in the 70s but then she claimed he abused her as a kid.

my theory is that she wasn't a big enough star for most people to care back then. she wasn't as big as say an anne murray. the lies was there for everyone to see. a strange story.

reply

The fact that she threatened her own brother speaks volumes about her character for me.

For those who didn't see the show, through lawyers, she threatened to report her brother as a child molester if he continued to speak out about her not being an Indian.

I guess she was fine with him being a molester and maybe molesting is own daughter or other children as long as he didn't cause trouble for her.

Here's the show if you missed it:
