Ban guns now.

Even more kids yet again killed via gunshot in the USA cinemas.

reply

First of all, you can't ban a Constitutional right. Second, not a single Politician is suggesting an Amendment. Even if they were, it would be impossible. And third, public support isn't there. Sorry, but we're not going to let the actions of the criminals punish law abiding citizens.

reply

You know the gun thing was a change to the law already?
It’s literally called an amendment. Things can change.

12.21 gun deaths per 100,000 people in the US.

0.23 gun deaths per 100,000 people in the UK.

reply

I know what an Amendment is. It would take 2/3 of Congress and 3/4 of the States to agree for one to happen. That would literally be impossible, at least in our lifetimes. Plus, not a single Politician is proposing an Amendment and the general public doesn't want one either.

reply

“Around half of Americans (48%) see gun violence as a very big problem in the country today, according to a Pew Research Center survey conducted in April 2021”

reply

People thinking gun violence in a very big problem doesn't necessarily mean they want a Constitutional Amendment, does it? Hell, I myself think its a very big problem, but I still own guns. Looking at another Pew Research Poll, only 1 in 5 Americans support a repeal...

Concerning our gun crime statistics, the VAST majority are from gang on gang crimes and suicides. So how about we institute stricter laws for those caught in possession of an illegal firearm? I would recommend very long mandatory minimum sentences. Get the criminals off the streets. Then I would suggest more funding into mental health sector to encourage people to seek help. There are measures we can take besides taking away peoples Constitutional rights, which again, literally no Politician is proposing.

reply

Fair points.

I guess there is no reason to be president at all really you can’t change a thing and you are only there for 4 years.

It is the public here that needs to act.

reply

Basically, the President isn't a lawmaker. This is the job of Congress, however they still have to stay in bounds of the Constitution.

reply

OK so there’s no point of having a President or Congress when this centuries-old Constitution that is way out of date is revered like the bible.

reply

Wrong. This is why we have the Supreme Court - to interpret the Constitution as time goes on.

https://www.supremecourt.gov/about/constitutional.aspx

reply

Can it ban guns?

reply

I already explained to you how banning guns would work and I also told you there is not enough public or political support to do so.

Washington, DC did however try to ban handguns and the Supreme Court ruled it Unconstitutional, as handguns are a "common use firearm." See the case DC vs. Heller.

reply

Yeah fair enough but i already said that it is the people who have to force the change.

The good people here.

Do the right thing, ban the guns.

reply

The minority doesn't speak for the majority and we don't think our rights should be removed due to the actions of criminals. Our Politicians feel this way as well.

Like I said before, why not focus on the main causes of gun crimes before jumping the gun - pun intended - by calling for a ban, which would be a nearly impossible task and mostly affect law abiding Americans who did nothing wrong?

While we're at it, why not ban Freedom of Speech because of hate speech? Or how about ban Freedom of Religion due to religious extremism? You say our Constitution is out of date, but its not. Those are our guaranteed rights, which are interpreted by Supreme Court to keep up with modern times.

reply

There is no freedom of speech in the USA on social media anyway.

Let’s just ban the guns that do nothing helpful at all in anyone’s everyday life.

reply

Freedom of speech obviously doesn't apply to privately owned businesses. I mean, you can't tell your boss he's a piece of crap and not expect to get fired lol.

I've explained this situation to you thoroughly and you're repeating once again "lets ban guns" even though you now know its not possible.

reply

Even Trump was banned on social media for his opinions. They were not his bosses.

It is not impossible maybe improbable any time in the near future.

reply

Stop trying to understand our laws because you're clearly lost. Twitter is a privately run company. They can do whatever they want. The First Amendment was designed to prevent Congress or the states from blocking people’s freedom to express themselves. The Government can't tell them what they can and can't publish.

I'm sure the 2nd Amendment will be repealed in the future. I predict it will take at least a few generations, but in the meantime, focus on the criminals and not law abiding citizens practicing their Constitutional right.

P.S. I head there was a mass shooting in the Plymouth, England today. I thought guns were banned?

reply

At least 5 people were unfortunately killed hardly a massacre, that’s the first time in months and just a tiny bit less than the 54-a-day USA.

reply

5 people dead is by definition a mass shooting. And I understand it was an isolated incident, however, you're calling for guns to be banned in the US, while they are in fact legal - albeit tightly regulated - in the UK. The perpetrator was legally licensed to own a firearm.

reply

We just need to ban mentally disturbed kids from having them, because you aren't getting rid of 300 million guns.

reply

Don’t blame the kids for the government, imagine if the kids only had a knife. No massacres.

Look at the cops, shoot first ask questions later no matter the race.

Guns are a national cancer that the USA needs to rid.

Ban guns and educate the young so the future generations don’t have to go through metal detectors at school.

reply

Other countries don't have gun violence issues? Most of central and south America would disagree with you.

reply

Oops, more evidence of you being ignorant to facts.
https://www.npr.org/sections/parallels/2013/09/19/224043848/the-u-s-has-more-guns-but-russia-has-more-murders

reply

Didn’t realise you were like South American countries fair enough.

You like facts here’s one too from your article;

“According to the FBI, the United States had 13,636 homicides in 2009 with a population that is more than twice as large. More than 80 percent of those killings were gun-related.”

You also must have missed this bit from your article;

“ It's difficult to make a direct comparison of gun homicides in the two countries because Russia doesn't break down its murder statistics.”

Nice read from 8 years ago thanks.

reply

I never said there wasn't an issue with gun violence in the US, I simply pointed out how incorrect you were to claim its a problem exclusive to the United States. You seem to be trying to drift away from that claim now.

reply

Guns used to be easy to get, yet kids didn't have to go through metal detectors at school. All the gun laws of your dreams wouldn't stop psychos from doing what they do. The problem isn't guns, it's people.

reply

The problem isn't guns, it's people.

The problem is those people having access to guns. Such people exist everywhere in the world, but most do not possess the means or the know-how to arm themselves for a massacre. In the US, however, even a pathetic little shit-stain of a middle-schooler can arm themselves for such a purpose.

reply

Exactly that.

reply

OP is a know-nothing moron.

reply

Thanks for the insightful input.

reply

I agree guns should be banned in the US , like in a normal civilsed country.

The problem is , its too late. The country is swamped with guns.

The "Then only criminals will have guns" argument is correct
- because they wont hand them in and they will always find more because the country is swamped

If I lived in the US I'd want a gun , but i prefer not having one in a country where no one has one .

reply

This is the thing, most guns in the USA are not held by ‘criminals’ but by civilians.

And the self defence thing they go on about is bogus, how many civilians have stopped a ‘criminal’ who is shooting them by shooting them back?

Whoever shoots first will win.

reply

How does it feel to know that will never happen?

reply

Like ending slavery? Took maybe 300 years.

Won’t happen in my lifetime obviously but you have to start the argument to get the ball rolling and save lives in the future.

Feels great.

reply

Lets just ban democrats from owning... problem solved.

reply

u can take my guns from my cold dead hands u commie bastard!!!
