What was Chevy Chase's last great movie in your opinion?

IMO I thought "Christmas Vacation" (1989) was his last truly great movie he's ever done.

reply

Not a great movie, but Nothing but Trouble is a guilty pleasure of mine. That's also one of Dan Aykroyd's last good movies too.

reply

That movie is totally effed up, but it's a guilty pleasure of mine as well.

This movie showed Chase in the early throes of the Chevy Chase disease.

I don't think he has ever done a great movie. The last good movie he was in would be Orange County (2002), although he wasn't one of the main stars in it. The last good movie where he was the main star would be National Lampoon's Vacation (1983).

reply

Yes unless Caddyshack is included, which would be low-end of great and anchored by perfomances, not writing.

reply

Depends what you mean by "great". Fletch was great, wasn't it? Unless you mean "Great" as in, "one of the greats", like it'd have to hit legendary Duck Soup/ Life of Brian standards.

reply

I thought Fletch was just alright, certainly not great.

reply

I love his old stuff but I had to look back at this to remember his last great role. I liked him in Snow Day but I'd have to say the last really good performance I saw him in would have to be Hero (1992)

reply

YUP..CHRISTMAS VACATION,ALTHOUGH HE WAS AMAZING ON COMMUNITY.

reply

His last great movie was also his first great movie:

National Lampoon's Vacation (1983)

reply

Bingo, although I think Caddyshack was his first great flick.

Chevy's peak career pretty much fits neatly into the 80s. Christmas Vacation is definitely his last great film. I don't think Chevy started to suck or lost his edge as many do. The world just changed. Chevy's brand of humor didn't fit well in the 90s and there's no place for him at all in the new century.

Community?

reply

he was great on Community, unfortunately he was ran off due to creative differences, but he was typical Chevy on that show, the more I watch it the more I notice the many nuances of his performance, its easy to miss sometimes. i am on my 4th run of the show and I still enjoy it, except for Season 5 and 6.

reply

He's so delightfully un-PC. I hear he was like that in real life. But I love my drunk uncle.

reply

yeah, he was basically Clark Griswold, but they made his character racist and I think he didnt like that, so he finally left.

reply

Officially? Funny Farm (1988).

Unofficially? Memoirs of an Invisible Man (1992)

reply

I was gonna agree with this post, until I realized that I wrote it.

Funny Farm is such a good film. Not surprising since George Roy Hill directed it.

reply

Others have mentioned Orange County, which I would agree is pretty great. It's underrated, certainly. Although, as the others said, Chase isn't the star.

Now, if you're counting television, he was (reluctantly...) on Community in 2009 and went for four seasons (until 2013), so if you mean a last great project, I'd go with that one. Tellingly, he didn't like being on the show and was at loggerheads with Harmon and some of the cast with his tenure there, so maybe that says something about why Chase hasn't been in anything great in awhile: his taste and/or ego are out of whack.

Lots of people here going on about Christmas Vacation but what about Memoirs of an Invisible Man ? That was a very good and enjoyable film.
