Jodie Foster Says Superhero Movies Are a “Phase That’s Lasted a Little Too Long”

Hopefully she is right about it being a phase. Getting a bit sick of superhero movies.

Superhero movies.
Gangster movies.
Vampire movies.
Zombie movies.
Time travel movies.
There are tons of genres that have been done and overdone.

reply

She's not wrong

reply

They will end if people stop watching them. Personally I'm still very much a fan and will always see the next Marvel Movie or show.

reply

💯

reply

MaryDeniro- you probably know what the other Marty (Scorcese) says about them.

"Not cinema." Or something like that.

reply

Well she is right about Phase. There is always Phase.

- Its fun Action movies in 80-th and then 90-th.
- Then rom-coms in 90-th
- Then teen movies in 90-th
- Then Horror obsession
- Then Young Adults movies obsesion
- Then came Superheroes

What she doesn't understand is that there will always be Phase. New one will jut come.

And I wish she would understand how pathetic, sad and bitter she sounds. No Jodie - your glory days will not comeback. Those times when you were A-lister and doing Oscar movies and everyone were praising you will not come back. You will never get big money if Superhero will die.

They are so bitter (aged stars and directors of 81-th and 90-th fame) because they think that's it's superheroes that killed those fun times when they would do Godfather, Hannibal and Forrest Gump and it would do good at the box-office and then bring them awards. And now they relegated to have small budget boring Oscar movie no one remembers and cares about. Or they had to play Parents or Bosses in Superhero movies to have money.

What they don't understand is that problem is with the fact that THEY don't make movies like Forrest Gump, Aliens and Jurassik Park anymore. Quality of movies THEY MAKE is very low. And its not because of Superheroes. They dont even make funny comedies like Bridesmaids anymore. Everything that comes to theaters is just so bad. And with Superhero dying out - no one will come to theaters at all and THEY (ACTORS) would get even less work and money. Jodie here downgraded herself to tv shows now. Because those big roles dont come anymore

reply

The difference is none of the previous phases you mentioned completely took over cinema and stunk the place up so much there was barely any trace of other genres.

Only about half the items on your list are barely ringing a bell , so they couldnt have been that prominent

unlike the current tsunami of superhero shit that is stifling the life out of cinema like a cancer

reply

NONE OF THAT IS TRUE...AT ALL.

reply

You mean there *was* a horror obsesssion?

in between a supposed " teen movies in 90-th" and "Young Adults movies obsesion"
what year(s) was that ? can you name any of the horror movies?

reply

HOSTEL...THE HILLS HAVE EYES...THE FOG REMAKE...JOY RIDE...CABIN FEVER...GHOST SHIP...THE FUCKING SCREAM MOVIES.

reply

The horror genre has never been the top box office draw. First of all an R rated severely limits your potential audience, and a PG-13 rating waters down the movie.

reply

THERE WAS A HORROR BOOM IN THE LATE 90S/EARLY 2000S THOUGH.

reply

There was a boom for the genre, sure. You could also point to the late 70s and 80s when the slasher flicks were everywhere, or 2004+ when Zombie movies had their boom. But the Horror Genre never took over the box office the way the Super Hero movies did. The Horror Genre has always been Niche. There was never a time when every horror movies was going to be number 1.

One of the few exceptions is The Walking dead becoming one of the top shows on television.

heres a cool graph of genres over time

I can only assume that superhomo is lumped in with "action" given the proportions

The reason why they make so many Superhero movies and endless sequel is because they make money. The only ones. Because Hollywood stopped shooting good original movies. Those few they make - are bad. And go unnoticed. Sometimes they do something original and good like Barbie, Oppenheimer, Tenet, Interstellar, Martian and it makes money. But there isn't many of them.

And back in a days they made new original interesting movies every year. People are finally tired of endless sequels and new Mission and Fast basically flopped. But there isnt anything interesting in theaters so people just dont go there.
And Superhero phase ending will not bring what Jodie Foster thinks it will. In her mind it probably means that NOW Hollywood will starts making good movies again with her and other old farts that used to be A-lister are gonna be back. But they will not be.

And its not only blockbusters. Look back at Oscar movies 20 years ago. Even when low budget - they were somewhat memorable. And look and what they nominate for Oscars now. Boring unwatchable crap. Of course no one wants to spend big money on that.

Hollywood skyrocketed budgets to 200 millions. And then wonder why people dont want to spend 20 dollars on ticket and more on pop-corn just to see some boring lifeless drama movie and only go to big events that Superhero are. Rising tickets is the reason people stopped going to drama and artsy fartsy movies in masses. Yet those movies still would have 60-80 millions budgets with half of it going to greedy Actors and artsy Directors. And then they whine why no one wants to see their stupid movies. Like Foster here.

Except now the superhero films are often losing tens to hundreds of millions of dollars, and it is for this reason we will thankfully begin to see fewer of them. The New Mutants, Shazam, Dark Phoenix, The Flash, The Suicide Squad, Wonder Woman 1984, and The Marvels are just a few of the recent examples of financial bombs. They also were garbage even with regard to mindless entertainment. DC ate a 90 million dollar investment in Batwoman and refused even to release it. Other low intelligence films like The Eternals and Shang Chi that were moderate successes would probably flop hard if released today. It's not just market saturation. Many of these films stink. It doesn't help that they often push trendy progressive bullshit at the expense of story and dialog quality.

reply

" trendy progressive bullshit at the expense of story and dialog quality."

I dont think the two are related , its possible to have both

reply

Some trendy progressive agendas are more bullshit than others. We're now in an extreme bullshit period. We aren't in the more noble liberal agenda days of, say, "Inherit the Wind" or "Mississippi Burning." Even Disney has finally recognized the present climate. Iger claims that they will now steer clear of politics as much as possible (e.g. the bogus "don't say gay" complaints about Florida laws restricting the teaching of sex, gender, etc topics to young children). Obviously, Disney sees a correlation. If they had been taking stances on uncontroversial issues that the vast majority agreed with, then they wouldn't have come to this conclusion.

reply

I am sorry but Jodie is right. The main problem with superhero movies is that there are too many of them and they bleed the industry dry right now. Superhero movies tend to be very expensive and the production of those movies requires money that could have gone to the production of other films with more medium sized budgets. Until around 2000 most films that were shown in cinema's were in that range and big budget CGI-heavy blockbusters were rare. In 2023 the kind of films that are shown in theaters are much more one sided than they were in the 80's and 90's: medium sized "big" movies are uncommon. And when the big blockbuster superhero movies don't do so well financially it isn't good for the industry as a whole.

reply

Main problem is declining quality of Hollywood movies. That's why TV shows like Game of Thrones and Walking Dead became so huge in the first place. Because they were giving movie quality but on tv.

Look at what crap Spielberg makes now? It's unwatchable. Look at all other movies - they all have that weird dark-brown-yellow filter that makes movie look mundane and depressing. And remember how colorful and fun movies were in 90-th. Even small budget ones. Look what an epic music themes they had.

And NO ONE FORCES directors to put that stupid depressing filter. For some weird reason they think this is what we want to see. And then enter Superheroes movies that all look fun and colorful. Thats why people started going to watch them. Thats why Barbie was such success.

And [people like Jodie dont understand it. That if Hollywood will not start making fun bright movies like they used - people are not gonna go see it.

reply

I agree with her, she is a great actress with very good movies in her career

reply

Meh! She's good, but she only has about five or so good movies. The rest is garbage like Flight plan!

reply

I liked:

Contact (one of my fav of all time)
The Brave One
Flight plan
The Silence of the Lambs
The Accused

Those are enough to consider her good actress

reply

Contact
Silence of the Lambs
Panic Room
Taxi Driver

Enough for me to make her a notable actress.

reply

Oh she's good in all her movies, just that alot of them are hot garbage. Flight Plan was far too contrived and silly to be watchable.

For her top 5, I'd swap Nell in there for sure. And Maverick as an honorable mention.

reply

Okay

reply

She's right.
